Hey all, I was wondering if you could help by suggesting some spells that are useful in combat that would raise my AC and make me live longer.

My DM runs a melee-heavy game and I tend to get knocked around a bit.

I know that fly and improved invisibility are my best friends but was wondering what others use/think.

Thanks in advance!

Why use a 3rd level slot for Fly when you can use a 2nd level slot for Alter Self to fly, in addition to getting a +5 or so Natural Armor bonus to help prevent you from getting hit.

Also, Blur and False Life may be of assistance to you as well. Both 2nd level spells in their own right. The Evocation form of Blur is called Veil of Shadows (MH book).

What do I become when I use Alter Self? A creature that can fly but what type of creature?

not much... but...

Change self - Avariel ---> Dispel Magic = a falling human sorceror... SPLAT

Fly ---> Dispel Magic = a descending human sorceror...

quite a difference...

Snow was right: alter self gives the needed ability and is a lot more versatile also.

Hello,
First in my opinion alter self is a must have spell.

You could use the old "become invisible and summon monster"
trick. Just take Summon Monster 5 as your 5. Level spell.
I assume you have improved invisibility already.

sysyfos :whatsthis if you dispel an altered self flying mage (flying for transforming into a fliying creature) he FALLS.

if you dispel a mage who has cast fly it gently flies to the ground...

as i said.. one point in favor of the fly spell...

of course alter self is pretty powerful..
still fly has some advantage...

If you were a tiefling, you could actually alter self into a mephit.

That gives you flight as well, and you can still cast your spells.
