| Kwyn06-25-06, 03:17 PM | Greetings It's been some time since I have needed new character information, so many of the old references I had previously used are either lost or I've forgotten where to look. In any event, I am in a party of five that is going to tackle City Of The Spider Queen. We're playing in the Forgotten Realms, using 3.5 rules. The party will be primarily good aligned, but I don't think we'll be the crusading save the universe type of group. Good intentioned adventurers put into an awkward situation where we have to do the right thing is more likely the theme. Current party Fighter Dragon Shaman Cleric Rogue Me Races are undecided, but I assume we'll be standard human/dwarf/elf types although the basic derivations of those might be permitted. If the subtype isn't in one of the books listed above however, it's unlikely we'd be able to make it work. Our stat rolling method is going to be 4D6, drop lowest, reroll 1's, roll seven stats drop lowest. That obviously means that stats will be on the high side. Regular access to surface resources such as wizard libraries, arcane training or magic item creation will be very limited due to the timeline requirements of the adventure. Once we go down, we won't be coming up very often and then only for a quick gulp of air before we decend once again into the depths. Here are our permitted sourcebooks Player's Handbook 3.5 Dungeon Master's Guide 3.5 Monster Manual 3.5 (no monstrous PC's though) Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting Player's Guide to Faerun Player's Handbook 2 Complete Warrior Complete Divine Complete Arcane Complete Adventurer Book of Exalted Deeds (maybe a stretch due to party composition and theme) Anything not listed above is almost certainly disallowed since we don't have access to the books and we're unlikely to go out and buy more. My concept is a wizard that utlizes spells that provide battelfield control more often than outright damage. I seem to recall that there was a trend a couple of years ago that included a fair amount of discussion on this type of wizard but I can't find any links, so those would be most helpful. The FAQ's and links listings are bewildering, so anyone who has their own favorite threads for arcane casters that you think would help will really make me happy. =) So, if anyone has some suggestions with those guidelines involved, I'd be very interested and appreciative for your insight. |

I had thought about beguiler or warlock but since both require lots of saves and SR, I wasn't sure those would be good choices when going up against Drow and Undead. That's why i keep coming back to the wizard because I could focus on spells that don't require either. Game is Saturday, so any pet arcane builds with an emphasis on battlefield control without complete reliance on overcoming saves and SR would be most appreciated. Thanks |

This is my idea of a perfect wizard. Race: Sun Elf Abilities: Int > Con > Dex > Wis > Cha > Str Progression: Elf Wizard 1) Iron Will Wizard 2) Wizard 3) Spell Focus (Abjuration) Wizard 4) Wizard 5) Extend Spell* Wizard 5/Incantatrix 1) Skill Focus (Spellcraft), Empower Spell* Wizard 5/Incantatrix 2) Wizard 5/Incantatrix 3) Wizard 5/Incantatrix 4) Greater Spell Focus (Abjuration), Persistent Spell* Wizard 5/Incantatrix 4/Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil 1) Wizard 5/Incantatrix 4/Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil 2) Wizard 5/Incantatrix 4/Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil 3) Arcane Mastery Wizard 5/Incantatrix 4/Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil 4) Wizard 5/Incantatrix 4/Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil 5) Wizard 5/Incantatrix 4/Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil 6) Extraordinary Spell Aim Wizard 5/Incantatrix 4/Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil 7) Wizard 5/Incantatrix 5/Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil 7) Wizard 5/Incantatrix 6/Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil 7) Maximize Spell Wizard 5/Incantatrix 7/Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil 7) Quicken Spell* Wizard 5/Incantatrix 8/Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil 7) * = bonus feat The Incantatrix above is the one from PGtF. Gives a good mix of buffing (persistant spells through Incantatrix), battlefield control (Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil and spell choices), as well as straight up damage (20 caster levels and cheap metamagic). Use extraordinary spell aim to make yourself a hole in your antimagic fields. Arcane mastery and Assay Resistance (SC) should make SR a non-issue. One thing to keep in mind is to choose your spells wisely, given that you won't be able to get back to the surface much. Good luck, I hear CotSQ is a meat-grinder. |
| Ganbor06-28-06, 03:15 AM | Wizard 6/Geometer 3/Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil 7/Archmage 4? Standard Wiz/Incantatrix/Archmage? (So overused, but for a reason...) Honestly, the battlefield control aspect will be more a function of spell selection than classes or feats - Grease, Web, Fogs/Clouds, Walls, Illusions, Summoned monsters...(Evan's Spiked Tentacles (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/GiantITP/ootscript?SK=20) anyone?) |
