| Sparrowhawk Charm06-22-06, 12:07 AM | I'm trying to create a 12th level character who is a master swordsman with a profound sense of honor for the fight. Race is open, magic is available but should not be the basis for a great build. He does not need to be LG, just favor the sword and fight with honor (no sneak attacks, assassination etc.) The campaign is in the Forgotten Realms, though Oriental Adventure's is also in the mix Fighter12 seems boring and I'm looking for something a little different. I considered Fighter2/Rogue?/Iajutsu Master? with the Rogue variant from Unearthed Arcana whereupon the rogue gives up Sneak Attack for fighter feats. Fighter2/Rogue10 would yield 14 feats by 12th level. Any ideas? I'm looking for builds. This guy should be REALLY good with the sword. He's not in it for the money, just to perfect the art of swordplay. What do you think? |
| Gryftir06-22-06, 12:15 AM | Swashbuckler 3 fighter 2, Duelist, Invisible Blade. |
| Sparrowhawk Charm06-22-06, 12:20 AM | the following books are unquestionably accepted and the campaign is between 3.0 and 3.5, so the list contains some books for each. Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting Complete________(any of the four) Player's Guide to Faerun Magic of Faerun PHB 3.5 DMG 3.5 Oriental Adventures Unapproachable East Shining South No splatbooks (Tome & Blood etc). Thus the better Tempest from Masters of the Wild is off the table. Give it your Best and thanks |
| Sparrowhawk Charm06-22-06, 12:30 AM | Swashbuckler 3 fighter 2, Duelist, Invisible Blade. I dig the Invisible Blade. Sneak Attack is not this guy's style though. No doubt a swashbuckler/iB/is dangerous. Insightful Strike makes the daggers sing and sneak attacks don't hurt either. I made a Swashbuckler/monk/rogue/IB/telflammar Shadowlord that was pretty scary (and used nothin but daggers), but I'm looking for the honorable warrior more than the clever skulker. I agree with the human fighter 2. 4 feats by 2nd level is nice. Looking to upgrade from the daggers to a prouder weapon. What next? |
| PhoenixInferno06-22-06, 01:06 AM | The "better" Tempest from Masters of the Wild? What are you smoking and who is your dealer? Because it must be good. What's wrong with Fighter 12? Just because its simple doesn't make it "boring". If you had Player's Handbook II, it would be downright exciting. But I would go with Iaijutsu Master. |
| Shadow_Fox_Deepwood_Arche06-22-06, 01:13 AM | Have you taken a look at the Knight from PH2? Thats pretty much what you are looking for. |
| Tytalus06-22-06, 03:35 AM | [...] the better Tempest from Masters of the Wild [...] Good one! Seriously, though, fighter is probably your best bet. Possibly Pal2/Fighter10, but I'd shy away from Paladin and get some more flexibility in playing the character. If you want something else, consider an elven FighterX/CampOfCL2+/ExoticWM1. CoCL for the nice dex-to-damage (an possibly movement boni), ExoticWM for Uncanny Blow. Use an elven thinblade. |
| Shadow_Fox_Deepwood_Arche06-22-06, 06:57 AM | The "better" Tempest from Masters of the Wild? What are you smoking and who is your dealer? Because it must be good. I was thinking along the same lines but I kept it to myself, heh. |
| Sparrowhawk Charm06-22-06, 12:11 PM | Ok, here is the party so far. Though we need a fighter type, we also need a rogue type. The honorable swordsman addressed one of the weaknesses wizard3/cleric3/mystictheurge6 ranger4/fighter8 bard12 sorcerer12 Maybe there's a better solution? |
| Prominence06-22-06, 12:28 PM | Paladin / Rogue / Shadowbane Inquisitor -Paladins are honorable -Rogues have trapfinding -Shadowbane Inquisitor is good for the combo. For melee only I'd use an Iaijutsu master. If you're allowed, grab Able Learner from Races of Destiny, take Rogue 1, and don't look back. |
| DaveTheMagicWeasel06-22-06, 01:21 PM | Cobra Strike Monk 2 / Swashbuckler 3 / Fighter 2 / Duelist 5 Add in Carmendine Monk, and then use the monks fists to let you TWF while getting round the "cannot attack with a weapon in her other hand" condition for Precise Strike. And you're only two levels off getting Elaborate Parry, which is incredibly powerful, and you get you Int to your AC twice, and add it to damage. Unusually, I'd recommend that you wield a Siangham as your main weapon (sorry its not a sword, but you can always ask your DM to let you create a feat modelled on the ones in the Eberron campaign settint to make a rapier or a short sword a special monk weapon) - since you can use Flurry while wielding it and its a one-handed piercing weapon for purposes of not losing your Duelist abilities. |
| Neopopulas06-22-06, 05:44 PM | Paladin / (and/or) Knight / Kensai Kensai is all about Oath and Loyalty and if you pick a sword, he's entire being is focused into said sword. |
| Sparrowhawk Charm06-22-06, 05:51 PM | I had another thought. What races (or templates) could i choose that would give the character wings without disfiguring him so much as to make social interactions impossible. I'm leaning away from druids in general, no offense to the noble woodlanders, and I'd like the winged aspect to be independant from the class selection if possible. as you no doubt saw from the previous post, another spellcaster may be less useful to the party. Is there such a thing as a winged elf? a celestial tmplate? a mad wizard's creation template? The ideas so far have been good. Sorry, but Eberron stuff is excuded (much weeping and gnashing of teeth) What about Kensai? Are there any cool builds with Kensai? Keep the good ideas coming! |
| Enamel_3206-22-06, 05:54 PM | Winged template? It's in savage species. |
| DaveTheMagicWeasel06-23-06, 08:20 AM | Is there such a thing as a winged elf? Yes, its called an Avariel. In Races of Faerun (can you use Forgotten Realms stuff?) You get +4 Dex -2 Con +2 Int +2 Wis, amongst other abilities (including double damage on a diving charge with piercing weapons) for LA +3. With those abilities a Swashbuckler with a rapier would work very nicely. |
| fendrin06-23-06, 01:07 PM | 12th level Honorable Swordsman... Highly skilled in swordplay wants to be able to take care of traps... OA available... First Recommendation: Human Beguiler 1/OA Samurai 8/Blade Dancer 3 BAB 11 gets 3 attacks/round. Saves: F+7/R+4/W+9 Beguiler gets you trapfinding and low level magic to get into blade dancer. (and you get a bit of RP material-- the dark past, redeemed hero, etc.) Able Learner lets you keep up your trap-handling skills and the skill requirements for Blade Dancer. Samaurai's Ancestral Daisho enhancements are based off of character level, not class level, so you can continue to enhance your swords. 3 bonus feats from Samurai, and 4+int skill points. Blade Dancer nets you a TON of mobility and as-needed weapon enchantments. Second Recomendation: Human Scout 2/OA Samurai 4/Weapon Master (OA Kensai) 6 Again, the key here is Able Learner. It's the only way I can think of to keep your Disable Device skill up high while still getting a high BAB. Scout gets you trapfinding (and Disable Device was errata'd onto the skill list), a boost to Init, and skirmish, which is in no way 'dishonorable', as sneak attack would be. Again, OA Samurai gets you Ancestral Daisho and a couple bonus feats along with giving you the skill points you will need. Weapon Master lets you get incredibly good with one weapon without resorting to magic of any sort. |
