Human Wrl 20

Cha:
+4 base
+5 levels
+5 inherent
+6 cloak of cha
+12 base DC

So +32 for the next effect.

Tenacious plague: summon locust swarms as insect plague and you may add your Cha modifier (+32) to the save DC of overcoming the nausea. Passing the save also halves the damage.

A Wrl20 can:

- summon six 10'x10'x10 swarms /round that last 200 rounds; so he can permanently maintain [b]1200000 cubic feet of swarming locusts[b], shaped completely at will.

- very slowly make them advance by summoning the new swarms a bit forward while the old ones go away.

- cast the invocations from a safe 1200' distance or in a sphere around himself. I suppose some hundreds of feet of swarming locusts grant total concealment.

- whoever begins it's turn inside the swarm receives 2d6 damage/round that overcomes DR/magic and must pass a Fort DC 32, or be nauseated.

Does our Warlock have to be using that invocation every single round to make it that big? That could crimp his style somewhat.

Well, he could just start the fights by summoning them directly over the opponents, who would start every turn trying to pass the fort save to avoid nausea.
If they fail they are to be surrounded by more and more swarms to avoid escape.

Also, aside from feats that would force a higher Fort DC, he could produce a quite similar effect as soon as he gets a greater invocation (11th). So there's still some space to insert summoning or Cha enhancing PrCs.

I think the potential for cheese in this one is that the spell's no need for concentration was put taking into account it doesn't move, but not casting it at will. So the usual solution for the effect is to go away, but with such a large duration and huge range, avoiding every group of summoned swarms can become quite hard.

I don't have Complete Arcane yet, so perhaps there's something in there that I'm just misunderstanding here, but....

This is completely incorrect. Your first number is correct, assuming an 18 in the stat. The other numbers, though, add to your total charisma - not to your charisma modifier. So, you're adding 16 points to your charisma, for a total charisma score of 34. That works out to be a +12 modifier. I'm not sure what "+12 base DC is" but I'd guess it's the "10 + spell level" number.

Could somebody clarify for me?

You're right.

Complete Arcane has nothing that changes the basics of spellcasting, even for a warlock (who uses a slightly modified spell-like ability set -- basically, all their powers are at-will spell-like abilities that suffer from arcane spell failure, but ignore it in light armor).

Tenacious Plague mimics an Insect Plauge spell (PHB), but has an effective spell level of 6th, and your Charisma modifier applies to the distraction DC of the summoned locusts. Thus, assuming an 18 charisma rolled (I hate having to do this, really -- I usually assign a 16, or, in the case of the warlock who has been nicknamed the "No Ability Dependancy" class, probably only a 14)... The DC of the effect would be:

(Charisma: 18 + 5 (level) + 5 (inherent) + 6 (enhancement) = 34, modifier +12)

12 (Locust Swarm basic DC for Distraction as per MM) + 12 (cha mod) = 24.

So, anyone damaged by the swarm attack has to make a DC 24 fortitude save or be nauseated for one round. Nasty, but not as sick as before.

By the way, yes, he'd have to keep invoking the Tenacious Plague every round to maintain that sort of volume. Still, using it once gives you 6000 cubic feet, shapable how you want.

This is completely incorrect.
Oh... The shame...

I won't post so late again. :embarrass

However, I didn't apply any other optiones, like:
- Ability Focus
- picking a +Cha race
- taking 8 levels in PrCs (which would probably summon less swarms/round and with a shorter duration, but could heighten the effects.)

I needed to know first if there was a big flaw in the base.
