My set is 18, 15, 14, 14, 13, 11.

My DM has run us as a party through 11th level and was using the dragon critical failure chart and i critted myself for 52 pts and was killed before i could withdraw. My DM has been very cool about our character and thus i was the first permanant fatality and i for reasons i dont have time to explain must return with a new character. i am worried about being the star of the group if i come back in as a wiz or a sor because we havent had either in the party yet and we have mainly been fighting minions of Darkhold. The other members of the party are a 2nd level barbarian, 10th level figher..... A 10th level druid, 2nd level (whatever the druid class that specializes in multiple animal companions).....A 12th level ranger with favored enemy zents, giants and undead in that order.... and a bard, paladin, gnome paragon complimentery beast.... i was up front fighter 1b and am wondering if anyone has any good ideas for what would most benefit the group without taking advantage of our DM's good will. in other words what could i play that will not do masive area effect damage but still help the part survive.

P.S. this has been one of the most enjoyable campaigns of my 16+ year gaming career and i really do not want to "screw" my DM or my party by being too weak or having a blatantly area effect oriented character.

any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
KLOWN61455.

A wizard or sorcerer that focuses on "buffing", "crowd control", and Illusions? Really, that is what your party needs. Why is playing an arcanist that focuses on damage going to garner DM ire? I don't understand that. Heck, doing damage isn't even the most effective thing you can do with a wizard or sorcerer alot of the time.

And :yuck: at stupid critical fumble houserules. That is why they suck. How heroic is that, to have your character stab himself in the foot and die? Just beyond stupid. I can't believe people still play with those...

Edit: Sorry... that was a bit of a rant... I've been at work for 16 hrs or so, and it is almost 5 in the morning here and I'm a bit cranky...

I seriously suggest a gnome wizard that favors illusions. You could check out the Shadowcraft mage threads, but you seem reluctant to pull anything out that will be too strong. So maybe just a vanilla wizard, or Wizard/Loremaster. Focus on gathering information, and confusing enemies. It does seem strange to me to come to the CO board and ask for a help with a character if you're afraid of making something too strong, though. ;)

if u have acsess to the phb 2 a dragon shaman could do decent damage and boost ur party if they are around u.... just take all 20 levels and u will be pretty ba;anced and makes for a good rping class as well
