I'm a DM and as a break in my campaign I'm going to be holding an arena battle. Each of my Six PC's will get to make two characters and I'll make two characters that will be fighting in an arena.

The actual characters the PCs were playing before will bet on who will win amongst the combatants. This is just a break in the action of the actual campaign.

They must make either a 3.0 character or 3.5 characters. No mixing of rules is allowed with the exception of the Forgotten Realms stuff, they can use that to make their 3.5 characters. Is this the best way to do this?

Books allowed :

3.0 splatbooks,3.0 core, FR campaign materials (FRCS,F&P, MoF, UE, LoD, etc.)

or

3.5 Core, Complete Warrior, Book of Exalted Deeds(no vow of poverty), Draconomicon, FR campaign materials (FRCS, F&P, MoF, UE, LoD, etc.)

Character Specs
-12th level
-36 point buy, one for one, all attributes start at 10's (overpowered, yes I know)
-Core races only
-No templates
-No ECL's
-Any class/PrC
-Buying gear with 100k gp
-I'm considering automatically granting the "special requirements" for PrC's, like destroying the 5HD of undead for the Doomguide PrC from Faiths and Pantheons. But not special requirements that would violate any other rules.

Arena Specs
-Antimagic field surrounding the crowd
-60ft radius octagon
-60ft ceiling
-random debri/weaponry lying about/corpses
-Should there be a time limit?

So what am I looking at here, what do you guys think would tear this place to pieces character wise? What am I overlooking as a DM here? What would you build to throw into the nastiness?

Thoughts and comments always appreciated,

~Oz

P.S. One might think this should go into What's a DM to do, but it is essentially asking what is the best (or worst) character that can be made for this situation given the circumstances. Thanks.

I'd advice you to take a look at the various threads with diffrent builds, there are some quite nasty ones out there :)

also, the characters you are making, do they get to coopirate?

No it is purely one on one combat arranged in a tournament styled bracket.

EX:

Guy#1-------
----------------------- \
--------VS------------------Winner
----------------------- /
Guy#2-------

Wash, rinse, and repeat this about 6 times. And on your note about looking at the builds, I'm fully aware of the nastiness that is floating around these boards.:smirk:

What I guess I meat to ask is given the environment do you think that a tactic would have any advantage over any other tactic. For instance, would ranged combat be better in this instance than spellcasting given the limited dimensions and such.

Also what do you think about the character creation process, is there any way I can improve it or anything else?

Thanks for your time,
~Oz

Don't mix 3.0 and 3.5. That will just lead to lots of arguments. Plus, 3.0 harm will be an awfully dominate spell.

go with a frenzied bezerker equipped with a ring of spell turning.

that will leave broke with only a little under 2,000GP but you will not die from damage and be immune to most death effects if they target you.

you are at least guatanteed to win the fight.

.........errrrr, did not see the anti-magic restriction until now. in that case definitely go with a frenzied bezerker.

EDIT: forgot about money...

use 20,000GP(roughly) to get a set of tesselated, mithril full plate. this would be the perfect circumstance for this armor since it is non-magical. it acts as light armor. tesselated is out of the arms and equipment guide. credit goes to someone else who mentioned this to me.

do not forget to get a strength bow tailored for your rage/frenzy strength. it is only a -2 to use if you do not have the strength and are not rage/frenzying. just in the chance you run into some spring attack fighter or range fighter. and if they are not range fighters then pepper them with arrows until they close for the fight and their doom.

as for stats. just put enough in DEX to max out your max dexterity bonus for wearing the armor. pump the rest into strength and constitution. leave the other stats at 10.

YOU WILL BE VICIOUS!

P.S.
post your outcome. i want to hear it.

2nd EDIT:

if by chance your DM heals the winner up after the fight then you will not need constitution either. if you are that lucky then just put everthing into strength.
