This weekend we're doing a one-shot adventure with 15th level characters. There will be about 8 players in the party, and apparently we'll be doing battle with at least one big dragon ("Because you can't have a one-shot game without a big dragon fight, right?"). The DM said to think of our party like "assassins for nature," meaning we'd be hitman but for a cause.

On that note, I'm thinking to create a Dwarven Runesmith and was looking for some ideas on builds. I think it'd be logical to take advantage of their ability to use heavy armor, but at the same time I'm hesitant to give up spellcaster levels and go with a fighter class because I obviously want to make adequate use of their Inscribe Rune ability.

Anyway, we're allowed to use any books, but I'd like to keep it relatively simple (at max only two prestige classes because the DM tends to be a little strict when it comes to stuff like that).

I was looking at Archmage, but their powers center on giving up spellslots, so that seems really redundant. Right now I'm leaning toward Wizard 10/Runesmith 5, but again, I'd think the prestige class is geared toward being a gish, so maybe I'm overlooking another prestige class.

Thanks for any help.

If you have access to the Draccomicon, one level in Dragonslayer will net you +1 caster level +1 BAB, and full armor proficiencies. Costs you Iron Will, Dodge and 4 cross-class points in Tumble. And I think Dragonslayer fits this character and setting well enough. =)

Simulacrum as a spell like ability for the win!

Snag a scale or a claw shard and pop out two mini drags (1/2 the orig) for assistance.

I'd say that the best you can do is this:

Fighter 1/Wizard 4/Runesmith 2/Spellsword 1/Eldritch Knight 7

Caster level 13, BAB 12.

I'd probably flesh it out like this:

1) Fighter 1: 2x FEAT (Power Attack, Cleave)
2) Ftr 1/Wiz 1: FEAT (Scribe Scroll)
3) Ftr 1/Wiz 2: FEAT (Practiced Spellcaster)
4) Ftr 1/Wiz 3:
5) Ftr 1/Wiz 4:
6) Ftr 1/Wiz 4/RS 1: FEAT (Improved Initiative)
7) Ftr 1/Wiz 4/RS 2:
8) Ftr 1/Wiz 4/RS 2/SS 1:
9) Ftr 1/Wiz 4/RS 2/SS 1/EK 1: 2x FEAT (Improved Toughness, Arcane Strike)
10) Ftr 1/Wiz 4/RS 2/SS 1/EK 2:
11) Ftr 1/Wiz 4/RS 2/SS 1/EK 3:
12) Ftr 1/Wiz 4/RS 2/SS 1/EK 4: FEAT (Empower Spell)
13) Ftr 1/Wiz 4/RS 2/SS 1/EK 5:
14) Ftr 1/Wiz 4/RS 2/SS 1/EK 6:
15) Ftr 1/Wiz 4/RS 2/SS 1/EK 7: FEAT (Quicken Spell)

Hope this helps!

Yeah I can see that :) Although I may be able to get my DM to approve all the prestige classes, this build doesn't allow the Runesmith to use either Insribe Rune or Share Rune... I'm considering eliminating 3 levels of EK to give me those abilities. I also want to use Dragonslayer, if only because of their immunity to fear at 1st level (my Wisdom score is only a 10), so I'm thinking something like:

Fighter 1/Wizard 4/Runesmith 5/Dragonslayer 1/Eldritch Knight 4

Thoughts? Are Inscribe Rune and and Share Runes worth taking those extra three levels for?

Dodge and Iron Will - two feats you're going to hate having to take for your immunity to fear.
Still.. +1 Bab, d10 HD, +2 to will and fort saves, Immunity to fear. It's a tempting level. It also gives you all armor proficiencies, and IIRC, martial weapons, so it's possible to drop Fighter 1 and take something else instead, to get into EK, but I'm not certain of that part.

Those abilities aren't worth 2 points of BAB. At all. I wouldn't do it.

And I don't see the point of dragonslayer either - your will save will be just fine because of the Wizard, Spellsword and Runesmith levels. There are other ways of resisting fear. Plus Dragonslayer will cost you two feats - dodge, which sucks badly, and Iron Will - and you *want* all the feats I listed in my attempt at a build. :)

OK, good point. I am going to give your build a try. Thanks for the help.
