I'm starting a campaign this week and I need to make a dragon, with a total ECL of 17. The party has two full arcane casters, one and a half clerics, a monk and a ranger-type. So, I was thinking of going with a holy-warrior type, a bit of a meat shield/combat, potentially with some spellcasting.

One vision I had was a young dragon with a level of monk, a level of pally and goes into Kensei. I like the Kensei class and could see it as powerful in the form of a dragon.

Another idea is Sacred Fist.

So, two major questions:

--How much ECL should I use in taking dragon levels vs. class levels?

--What class works with a combat-oriented dragon?

What books can you use?

Draconomicon would be nice, and Dragonlance Campaign setting would be better.

For some reason WotC has seen fit to make dragon cohorts by definition more powerful than dragon PCs.

For books, I can use just about anything, especially Draconomican, but not Dragonlance. I can use any dragon type, even evils. Character MUST be a dragon; the story revolves around dragons and I am one of two in the party.
