I am rolling up a 17th level character. I am wanting to do a Monk Sorcerer. I have thought about going 10th level Monk & 7th level Sorcerer. As a race I was planing on going Elf. The main spot I'm wanting advice on is what feats I should take. For starters I am taking combat casting & imp graple but other than that I'd like some suggestions. Feel free to give any other friendly advise that you feel might be useful.

THanks

My advice is to go either straight Monk, straight Sorcerer, or go Gish and do a Sorcerer/Fighter/PrC. If you class both Monk and Sorc. together, you will be spreading your neccesary stats very wide. Monk already has the most stat intensive requirements, with Strength, Con, Wisdom and Dex being important. Adding Charisma to that is going to make you a weaker character without some pretty amazing stats (read that as non point buy high rolls).

But if you were forced to build a Monk Sorcerer combination what's the most optimized way to go about it?

If you are going to be an elf, don't be a sorcerer, you would have to pay a xp penalty, go with wizard. If you want to be a sorcerer and elf, go half-elf so you won't have the xp penalty. I would suggest human, it is the best race for odd combos like this.

Your biggest hurdle will be your stats like CompleteSatori said earlier.

Most of the feats you would want would be the same as any other monk, with the addition of Arcane Strike, on second thought, if you go Monk 10 then Sorcerer 7, you would not be able to take that till 18th level.

If you go Monk 10, you're going Monk 11 for Flurry progression.

I would take 1 level of sorc and then have him go Dragon Disciple. The stats bonuses and the continuing rise of spell levels compliment the monk and sorcerer classes very well

Do you have access to Dragon magazine? It is, as far as I know, impossible to make a Monk/Sorceror as powerful as a normal Sorc. None-the-less, Dragon 314 has the Master of the East wind PrC, which does decently. Check it out.

Which books can you use?

The real question here is: how Monk-y or Sorcer-y do you want your character to be? If you just want Wis to AC, buy a Monk's Belt and go straight Sorc. If you want Evasion and Stunning Fist, go Mnk 2/Sor X. If you want Greater Flurry, you have to go Monk 11. Spell Resistance? Monk 13. Just remember that Sorcerers get their next level spells on even levels, not odd like Wizards.

If you're not so worried about special abilities, Mnk/Sor/Eldritch Knight might work okay. You'll need the Militia feat for martial weapon proficiencies, or take a fighter level.

I know Monk/Sorcerer is a cool concept, but this is a really hard build to play under the rules. As a monk, the only ability score you don't need 12+ in is Charisma, and your greatest drawback is that you lag in HP and BAB behind a straight fighter. As a sorcerer, the one thing you can't afford to do is lose caster levels. Plus both classes (1) benefit greatly from class-specific feats, and (2) lag behind the competition when it comes to bonus feats. See where I'm going with this?

I have tried to play a Monk/Sorcerer three separate times, with three separate builds. All of them became progressively more useless starting around 8th level. Consider yourself warned.

DD doesn't give caster levels, only bonus slots.

Sorc 1/Monk x/DD10/Initiate of the Draconic Mysteriesx is probably a decent idea.

Abulafia,

Did you try the Master of the East wind PrC found in Dragon 314 that catharz mentioned? Sounds awesome though I haven’t seen it yet. (Thanks for that Catharz :D)

No. I read through the class and wasn't particularly impressed by it, but I don't remember the specifics right now. I have the mag at home and I'll check it out after work.

All right, Master of the East Wind. The prestige class advances Monk abilities (AC, speed, unarmed damage, but NOT FLURRY) and spell levels, and grants access to the spells and ability of the Air Domain. However, there are problematic drawbacks:

d6 HD
Poor Fort and Ref saves
4 skill points to spread over Monk skills + Sorcerer skills

And most importantly, the Prereqs:
Ki Strike (magic)
Climb 10 ranks
3rd-level arcane spells

So you can't get into this class without 4 levels in Monk, 6 levels in Sorcerer, and either a wasted feat or 6 Sorcerer skill points spent cross-class to get those 10 Climb ranks.

So . . . yeah.
