| gabrion05-08-05, 05:12 AM | So I've never played a Warlock before and I think I'm going to in an upcomming campaign. The game is in FR and I'm looking for a rogueish character who will eventually take levels in the Teflemmar Shadowlord PrC. I want Warlock because I think I can use fleed the seeing with the shadow pounce ability with a cool effect (kinda like nightcrawler). Anyway, I was hoping to get some help since I don't know how I should work Warlock into the build. Just to reiterate, I'm looking for the following.... >Enough levels of Warlcok for Flee the Scene (and the more the better for the most part). >Must have 4 levels of Teflemmar Shadowlord >Hoping to be a sneaky combat sort, so ideas for making a combat oriented character are good. I'm also unfamiliar with most invocations, so if anyone has quick suggestions for invocations that would be good for a thief/fighter type, those would be helpful as well. Thanks. |
| Gol05-08-05, 02:07 PM | Human Rogue 3 / Warlock 12 / Shadowlord 5 Feats: 1: Dodge H: Able Learner 3: Mobility 6: Spring Attack 9: Extra Invocation (Fell Flight) 12: <open> 15: <open> 18: Quicken Spell-like Ability (Flee the Scene) Order of levels: Rogue 1 Warlock 1-4 Rogue 2-3 Warlock 5-6 Shadowlord 5 Warlock 7-12 I'm actually playing this character right now and enjoying it very much. With Able Learner, you quite adequately fill the role of primary skill monkey, and this build is playable from level 1. |
| gabrion05-08-05, 02:34 PM | Hey, thanks a lot! Just wondering though, why the Spring Attack Chain? Is that simply how you fight when you aren't using the shadow pounce? Any other popular builds out there? |
| Mommy was an Orc05-08-05, 02:35 PM | Check the sig for the Daggerspell Warlock build - all you need to do is sub out most of the feats and go for Shadowlord instead of Nightsong Enforcer and Master Thrower. The Fighter level helps out a lot as it gives you the feats necessary for the 2 feat intensive classes... |
| gabrion05-08-05, 03:33 PM | @ Momma was an Orc-Thanks for the link. I'm a little confused though, since the build you linked has the Eldtrich Blast progressing even when you aren't taking levels of Warlock. Is that right? More generally, I want this guy to be doing cool sneak attack stuff, so I was wondering if Flee the scence, since it leaves behind a major image, will leave my enemy flanked if I use it to DD to his other side. This tactic seems like it would work well for a rogue/warlock, but I wanted to make sure I'm not missing something. |
| Caelic05-08-05, 03:36 PM | I like slipping in a level of Monk (and the Ascetic Rogue feat, if you can fit it) for Flurry of Blows--and eventually, the Sun School feat from CW, which nets you a free attack at your highest BAB whenever you use Dimension Door--a nice little addition to your Shadow Pounce. |
| Mommy was an Orc05-08-05, 04:00 PM | Yes - Daggerspell Mage progresses arcane caster level for 9/10 of the levels. At those points, it increases the Invocations/Eldritch Blast damage as if you were taking levels in Warlock. As it also bumps up your Sneak Attack damage, it is all good. That's an interesting question about the flanked. I have no idea. @ Momma was an Orc-Thanks for the link. | Gol05-08-05, 04:05 PM | Hey, thanks a lot! Just wondering though, why the Spring Attack Chain? The Spring Attack Chain is required for Telflammar Shadowlord. I also forgot to add in Blind-Fight, another pre-req. Take it at 9 and bump the Extra Invocation to 12. |

The builds mentioned are just what you've asked for. Trust these guys. I typically don't use the daggerspell mage, because I'm not a big fan of two-weapon fighting in this build. (note: I LOVE two-weapon fighting, just not in this build) However, the daggerspell mage does definitely help by keeping those invocations and EB damage going. Come to think of it that's probably the only intention other than some stat improvements. If your DM approves of Supernatural Transformation, I suggest taking it. I'll assume, however, that you can't use it for now. As for my thoughts: Human Rogue3/Warlock12/Shadowlord5 Rogue 1 Warlock 1-3 Rogue 2 Warlock 4-6 Rogue3 Shadowlord 5 Warlock 7-12 1st- Dodge, Blind-Fight 3rd- Mobility 6th- Spring Attack 9th- Spell Penetration 12th- Greater Spell Penetration 15th- Craft Wondrous Item 18th- Craft Staff Invocations: Hideous Blow, Spiderwalk, Darkness, Flee the Scene, Fell Flight, Walk Unseen... This should help you with Uber stealth and give some versatility via items. I recommend the Greater Chasuble and maybe a Scepter. |
| Broblawsky005-08-05, 08:40 PM | Do Hideous Blow and Shadow Pounce work together to give you a full attack of EB-enhanced melee attacks? |
| slade_caizer05-08-05, 08:49 PM | Do Hideous Blow and Shadow Pounce work together to give you a full attack of EB-enhanced melee attacks? No, I must admit they work against one another--which is why I begin to see the wisdom in the two-weapon fighting route. Hideous Blow would be your only attack, however if flanking with an ally (or debateably your after-image), you'll get sneak attack dice + EB dice + base weapon + str + misc. By miscellaneous I mean anything you can think of to boost like the chasuble or the scepter. Also you could consider Arcane Strike used to burn up those Shadowlord spells (if you don't meet the prereqs for AS this way then plz disregard). This is why I fully suggest Spell Penetration or any other means of defeating SR. It's crucial to do all the damage since it's kind of a hit or miss thing. Some like this method, and I can definitely see why some do not. I put the crafting in there to help make up for some of the deficiencies. A wondrous item of use-activated Divine Power sounds wonderful to me--if a bit expensive. Then there's always the staff with Greater Visage of the Deity. I just love that spell... |
| gabrion05-08-05, 11:57 PM | Hideous blow could still be used if you make one attack, then use a quickened flee the scene, which would allow you a full round attack with shadow pounce. |

The Major Image does not threaten a square, therefore it can not provide flanking. |
| cyberpunks05-09-05, 09:52 AM | Or you could use telflammar shadowlord's little brother, the feat Sun School, from Complete Warrior. |
