Now before I even start I must warn you, my DM is crazy.... very crazy.
So my 16 level druid is in control of a 18 hit dice Dire Bear, crazy enough.......not yet. He is also divine rank 0. This bear has a BAB equal to his hit dice and was given the gift of intellligence by some mysteriously powerful being after we completed a quest for him. So in this gift of intellegence my bear was given an INT of 25 and the ability to speak common. Then he was awarded two levels of Wizard. He doesn't gain the familiar or the acutal hit dice but he gains the abilities and spells.

I for one have never played a wizard and I have no idea what spells to give the bear. All 3.5 core books and complete series are allowed for spell selection. The bear is NE and no direct damage spells are allowed. So basically what support spells would be good for this bear to cast.

Thanks alot everyone I know that most of this stuff is ridiculous but I dont question my DM's calls.

This is my sort of DM!!!

WOW!

(Mine forbade me from hunting and awakening a dinsosaur, JUST so I could possess itīs body, or use it as a mount... some people...)

At 2nd level you have access to 1st level spells?
(Would sorcerer not be better? Suppose not with the intelligence... Iīm getting visions of beast from x-men...)

So heīd nee a bag with a book compartment as in his spare time heīll be reading (unless he can get around this with his divine rank? And donīt they get spellcasting and bits?)

(I assume heīs mainly a fighter type? Big and damaging?!)

Mage armour is good (assuming heīs unarmoured?)
Enlarge person would be CLASSIC! (the bigger they are... the harder they hit things!)

(will edit more as the computer works!)

Protection from *anything* would be good to stop any mind take overs! (No bear possession! WOO!)
Shield for more AC and magic missile protection!
Mount (okay for comedy, your bear summoning a mount for 4 hrs a day! Your DM would love it! Plus you can ride on your bear!)
Identify (but surely you have THIS covered!?)
Truestrike! (For them times you face a superior foe!)
Charm person? You know you want to!
Disguise self (for naughty bear antics!)

But I still think ENLARGE PERSON is the way to go! Mass bears of destruction! Thatīs what Iīm into (well if theyīre ironbodied... and then turn into an octopus!! lol!)

(ps. does this make the druid the bears cohort? Technically it CANīT be an animal companion anymore!? It has intelligence?!)

Technically the bear is no longer my "Animal Companion" he is just me very best friend and has chosen not to abandon me as I have been greatly responsible for the great power he has achieved. Our link has grown so strong that we communicate telepathically(in perfect common) at any distance and it is not uncommon for my party to find me and my bear laughing at random times as we enjoy telling jokes about the other characters in our heads.
Also for spellcasting purposes the bear does not study persay but he needs to prepare spells each night for one hour. He does not use books like a normal wizard.
My dm would not let him become a sorcerer because when I was asked what gift my bear would recieve I said "Inteligence" and he was given these powers accordingly.
thanks for the ideas

I think when you meant intelligence, you meant to say sentience via the Awaken spell. Ah well.

The Bear is not a valid target for Enlarge Person. Mage Armor would be a good spell, so would spells like Ray of Enfeeblement and Shield.

Ideally you'd want to advance your bear's Wizard casting from now on, not its HD. Its too bad you couldn't get it to take Druid levels - THAT would be nasty.

That sounds really nice... having a bear friend. :)

I would recommend from the PHB:

Feather Fall

True Strike - (if the bear has Power Attack)

Disguise Self - to walk into cities as a less threatening creature

Expeditious Retreat - for chasing down prey

from Complete Adventurer:

Critical Strike - Swift action to cast, lasts 1 round, xtra 1d6 dmg against flanked opponents per attack, double Crit range.

Expeditious Retreat, Swift - Swift action to cast, lasts 1 round, do charge attacks over great distances.

Mage Armor is a must, and I'd say Expeditious retreat as well, but doesn't he learn spells as a wizard? If so, just take ALL of them.

Also for spellcasting purposes the bear does not study persay but he needs to prepare spells each night for one hour. He does not use books like a normal wizard.

So does he get every spell for free or does he get the number of spells a wizard gets without buying more?
