18th level
Anything WotC

I am looking to create an 18th level battlefield control and spontaneously adaptable team player arcane maven. I thought about including the Incantatrix in this build (for its obvious benefits) but I don’t want to restrict my access to any school of magic. I want to be able to do two things really well

1) I want to always be able to contribute meaningfully in combat. I am not necessarily looking for a blaster wizard I just don’t want to be stuck being pointless in combat. I've created wizards in the past that were so defensive that they couldn't really help out in combat - I don't want to do that again.

2) I want to be the arcane problem solver, if there is scrying to be done, a door to opened, teammates to be teleported, buffing or utility spell needed I want to be ready for anything. I never again want to say “Oh sorry guys I don’t have that spell memorized but if you wait till tomorrow I can cast it” – all you arcane casters out there can feel my pain!

I am thinking:
Wiz 5 / Mage of the Arcane Order 7 / Mind Bender 1 / ???

But I don’t know how to craft my last levels up to 18th? I have never played a character above 12th level before.

All ideas welcome?

Thanks,
Necrosnoop

I have two ideas which you might like to consider:

1. Considering you are starting at 18th level (if I understood correctly) the mystic theurge is already blossoming very nicely. You'll be able to be a real swiss army knife with that one at those levels.

2. Considering that you are thinking of MoAO sorcerer might be a better fit for that. As a wizard you would need to leave those spell slots unprepared and it might very well be the wrong level. As a sorcerer, you could just call in what ever spell you need (remember that it is just your level/2 spell levels/day... so it is not very much... And limited wish only costs 250 exp anyhow).

Does either one of these intrigue you at all, or shall we continue with the wizard+prcs build?

How about:

Wiz5/Incantatrix10/Lor3

The metamagic abilities of the Incantatrix should make you quite formidable in combat: quickened greases, walls, fogs (all battlefield control) and I think that the Loremaster fits your
problem solver need as well as making you one hell of a diviner.

If you're worried about specializing grab the spells from higher levels that you want now and put them in your spell book (even if you can't cast them) and then ban those schools-- i suggest necromancy and enchantment.

you only need 2 or 4 levels of MotAO. at the most, you will only ever have 10 levels of spells to allocate to unprepared Spell Pool spells. and you mainly want those to be utility spells at the lower levels. for times when someone needs to swim, burrow, etc. 4 levels of it gives you up to 6th level spell to allocate to Spell Pool. rarely will you ever want to prep a 7th level slot for such a thing. so no need for MotAO 5 through 7.

Great advice people, thanks.

Sisyfos: I am not really interested in a sorcerer – I want to stick with wizard. Mystic Theurge is an option but let’s put that on the backburner for now. Please continue with the wizard+prcs builds. Oh, and I am creating an 18th level character.

Helicopter: good advice about the MotAO, thanks!

No matter what I want to include a level of Mind Bender I am going to select the Leadership feat and some social skills any way and you gotta love telepathy 100’.

How about this as a base:

Wiz 5 / MotAO 4 / MB 1 / ???

But how would you recommend that I finish off this build in light of the kind of caster I am going for?

Thanks,

Wiz 5 / MotAO 4 / MB 1 /

Seems like a great start. You can finish it very niftily with:

Incantatrix10

The instant metamagic is great for versatility. It gives you the extra abilites just when you need it and adds one spontaneous element to the wizard's otherwise prepared spellcasting. (If you need that teleport quickened, here is your choice... if you need to heighten that one spell, chain spell the other, want to twin spell something, etc... )

Improved metamagic on the other hand just gives you some more oomph for the character. Empower becomes a 1 level adjustment and this boosts your offensive potential quite some.

Your utility role will be defined by your spell selection and your pre-incantatrix PrCs and your offencive role will be great because of the Incantatrix abilities.

Use summon monsters liberally... that telepathy ability works great with those.

Have you used a Mind Bender 10 in game? Don't you think you lose too many spell levels? Aren’t the DCs of your Mind Bender abilities static and too low?

Necrodude was sadly mistaken. You're very right for taking only one level of Mindbender. :) My suggestion?

Wizard 5/MotAO 4/Mindbender 1/Loremaster 5 (6-10 later). This requires no speicalization in any school, gives you super utility on what spell you can pick from, and on top of that, the Loremaster is good at solving problems in multiple ways, again without commitment toward a school. The Loremaster gives you feats, bardic knowledge, spiffy abilities... it's just darn useful. Rary's Neumonic (sp?) Enhancer should always be on your spell list so that you can reuse spells you may need, and if you can get the spell 'Anyspell', it'll give you even more versatility. A character like this should be prepared for essentially anything. :)

I hope this helps. :)

Master of the Squirrel's I like your build and I think I’m going to go with something close to that, Incantatrix is awesome but I just don’t want to give up any schools.

One question I have is, you said:

and if you can get the spell 'Anyspell', it'll give you even more versatility.
Isn't Anyspell a cleric spell from Magic of Faerun? Is there an Arcane version out there somewhere that you are referring to? How exactly would that help my build?

If I am not mistaken, Mindbender has some quirky skill requirements to meet for a Wizard or Sorceror. Would it not entail a Cosmopolitan feat in order to get into it at level 7 (needing Leadership at 6th level of course)?

Skill Requirement: 4 ranks in Bluff, Diplomacy, Intimidate, Sense Motive.

I wouldn’t enter into Mind Bender PrC untill at the earliest 9th level. Max cross-class skill for a 9th level character is 6 so it would not be a problem.

Note: Cross-class skill max rank is 4.5 at sixth level so if you have a high intelligence and pick your skills wisely entering the Mind Bender PrC at 7th is possible. The Cosmopolitan feat is not needed.

If I were in your situation, Necro, I would play a Sorcerer. I know, you've expressed your preference for being a Wizard, but let me explain. If you find a spell at a given level you really wanted but didn't have the room for, you could take the Extra Spell feat from the Tome and Blood. I realize that even with this feat, the Sorcerer is still limited in spell choice when compared to a Wizard, but it could be used as a small stepping stone to bridge the gap. If it's metamagic you're after, simply pick up the Arcane Preparation feat, which would allow you to apply metamagic feats without increasing their casting time. But, that's just me.

If you're absolutely adamant about being a Wizard, I'd suggest that you go with something similar to Master of Squirrel's build;
Wizard 5/MotAO 4/Mindbender 1/Loremaster 5 (6-10 later).
This seems like what you're going for.

I only really ever played rogues and wizards and I have never had a character above 12th before. Do think a sorcerer has enough of a spell catalogue to compeat with a wizard at 18th level?
