| Jonah06-21-05, 04:26 AM | I need some ideas for a 19th level character. In the party we have a half-orc barbarian/ frenzied berserker, (the tank,) a halfling rogue and a dwarven Cleric. My last character was a mage so I want to stay away from Arcane spellcasters and I have a habit of playing dex based characters such as Swashbucklers, Rangers as well as Druids. So what I'm looking for is something different but not to take the emphasis off any of the other characters. We certainly don't need another fighter type as the Barbarian more than makes up for it. We use 3.5 FR setting and all the relevant books, Complete Warrior/Divine etc and I just can't seem to make my mind up. The character will also get the full amount of money for someone of their level so kit isn't really a problem. Also alignment isn't an issue although I tend towards good aligned characters. I know this is not a lot to go on but sometimes it helps to have a fresh pair of eyes. |

Another option is to go the warrior of darkness way, taking fighter, then blackguard, though as noted that will make you evil. If you go the fighter route, a tactical fighter, using a spiked chain that trippes, or the grapples, or even bullrushes, can be a nice add to the group. Do you prefer a skill-mokey or a fighting-based characater? P.S - just had an idea - a monk grappler, instead of a fighter one, using the reaping mauler PrC from CW. |
| LordKiwi06-21-05, 05:07 AM | Your party is missing an Arcane caster, but seeing as you don't want to be one a Psion is the closest thing to fill the gap. If you like agile fighter types you could take a Swashbuckler/Fighter using Dex and Int along with some feat combos (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=416752) (AoO and Defense ones, probably). Alternativly switch the Swashbuckler for Monk to increase your damage output (or maybe take all three). Swashbuckler 3 / Fighter 2 / Monk X could be fun. What books do you have available? Lord Kiwi, |

You'll maybe want flight to keep out of the way of the berserker, and area damage would probably be at a premium from the other characters in the group. Maybe just go for one of the crazy multi-threat builds that will see you with 9th level arcane spells, 9th level divine spells, 16BAB, Sneak Attack and good skills? Granted it's hard/impossible without UrPriest (thus evilness) but every once in a while it's nice to go crazy like that :D |
| prebziah06-21-05, 09:40 AM | What do you think about a Str based barbarian/rogue/master thrower... rage helps alot when you'r throwing weapons. if you want some extra feats, you could paick human as race or add fighter. hmmmm... take the brutal throw(?) feat for Str to the attack rolls when you are using throwing weapons. you could be more like the thug-rogue ( not thug, if you know what I meen :D) |
| lgw06-21-05, 09:48 AM | you don't have a "face"... and you don't have a arcane caster. so psion isnt that wrong - but i'd suggest going telepath10 -> thrallhead10. really a nice combo and you are epic ready, too :-) |
| CompleteSatori06-21-05, 11:31 AM | Why don't you use the patented "Slayer of Evil" build? Sure its exalted but its also bloodthirsty! And at your level the build absolutely destroys bad guys! |
| cvazi06-21-05, 12:31 PM | How about bard/sublime chord(I think this is the Bard PrC that gives you level 9 spells). You can boost the party as well as provide much needed arcane support. Also, you can act as the party face. One thing worries me though: In the party we have a half-orc barbarian/ frenzied berserker, (the tank,) How are you going to deal with him when you DM starts using him against your party? |
| slade_caizer06-21-05, 12:39 PM | CG Elf Swashbuckler3/Fighter4/ChampionofCorellon3/Duelist10 That should be a fairly fun dex fighter. Alternately, do a Bard/Fighter/Bladesinger. And if you want a completely different direction to go in, Druid/MasterofManyForms/Warshaper should give you plenty of variety and versatility. |
| Urnsk06-21-05, 05:36 PM | Well... you have the tank, the skill monkey, and the cleric. If you're set against an arcanist, a battle-field controller wouldn't be a bad addition. A level or 5 in Marshal, focusing on Master of Tactics would go a long way toward helping your Rogue and Frenzy buddy in their flanking, where Art of War would be great for battle-field control. A decent str/Cha/Con mix would let you serve as a party face; a 5th level Marshal can grab Motivate Charisma, MoT, and AoW, as well as two "major" auras, but costs you another BAB point. I'd decide whether you are a team-tweaker, or a battle-field control, and put your second aura into Motivate Charisma if your party needs a face. A couple levels in fighter get you two melee feats, repeat with Psychic Warrior, for a net -2 to BAB, but four bonus feats. I'm a big fan of Tactical Soldier for a melee build that's trying to flesh out a party with a tank. That supreme Power Attack has a tendency to leave them lower on hitting... with flanking and MoT, they don't need to sacrifice as much to hit, and you still get the flanking bonus yourself. In short, Marshal 4/Fighter 2/Psychic Warrior 2/Tactical Soldier 8/Exotic Weapon Master 3. If you can, use a Kawagana from OA; otherwise, Spiked Chain is good enough. Obviously, you'll either want human or Half elf for race, unless you don't care about granting a move actions; then drop Marshal to 3, and take another PrC in it's stead; Faerun certainly has an abundance. Though a Kawagana weilding, multiheaded Chitine Fighter 4/Dervish 9 would be pretty gruesome, if you focus on TWF/Trip/Disarm (yes, you could do Sunder, but why break treasure when you can steal it?)... ditch multiheaded if not allowed, finish up Dervish, and grab a level in EWM. Again, spiked chain works if Kawagana isn't allowed, albeit not *quite* as well. you'll want to get permanently enlarged, though. Third, I know you said you're tired of the wizardly types, but a truly different spin on typical arcane users is the Wu Jen. FR has a plausible reason for them to be lurking around, and their flavor isn't quite the normal Wizard. Play up the taboo's for all you can, and just for kicks, stick with the class, rather than taking any PrCs. Sure, PrC's have apeloads more power, probably, but that also just makes a Wu Jen a wizard with a different spell list, when they are really so much more. Just my .02 gp. |
| Jonah06-21-05, 08:58 PM | CG Elf Swashbuckler3/Fighter4/ChampionofCorellon3/Duelist10 Now that I like. Unfortunately, my DM has no sense of adventure and won't allow Psionists. I've gone through both the BoVD & the BoED and I'm not allowed to use these because the DM doesn't have them. |

Wu Jen has a number of advantages: (1) it keeps a lot of the really good stuff, like summoning (2) its very gishable, including giant size (oh the awesome) and body outside body at the high levels. (3) the spell secrets are useful if you concentrate in particular spells. I personally like a Telekinesis themed Wu Jen. Take metal as your favored element, spend your first spell secret on something vaguely linked to a TK-like effect, and then burn a bunch of spell secrets on TK. For great justice, take some levels in Master of the Unseen Hand. There's a "Jean Grey" thread on here somewhere i started that uses WuJen and MotUH for just that purpose. |
