So far, I've found Zenythri (MM2), Chanod (MM2), Aasimar, Tiefling, feytouched (FF) and wisplings (FF) to be more or less worth the +1 ECL cost. The Draconic template is slightly overpowered for +1 ECL, and I love WotC for it; they didn't automatically round up like they usually do. It's also not so badly overpowered that it's always worth the lost class level, which I think should be the standard. The Mechanatrix (FF) is shockingly (haha i made a funny) overpowered for +1 ECL. I'm not quite sure how that snuck through.

The +2 Half-Celestial and Half-Fey seem to be worth their costs, and I'm personally a fan of the Shadow template (which my guess is +2, although there's none listed).

Others?

I also like air genasi, their breathless special quality is pretty kick butt imo.

Then there is half-ogre which is terribly terribly overpowered, if you play a meat grinder type of character, there's no reason to not be a half-ogre.

Feral template is also pretty uber.

yeah, for a fighter type you cant do any better than half-ogre from SS. its one of the best +1EL you can get.

From Dragonlance Campaign Setting, white dragonspawn gives +2 to 2 stats, some minor bonuses, and +1 sorcerer casting level for +1 ECL.

The +2 Half-Celestial

half-celestial is fair with +3 or even +4 (w. wings)
any DM allowing it for +2 is just asking for it...

I believe the +3 is w/ spell-like abilities, and the +4 is w/spell-like and wings. +2 is what's listed in the BoED, and probably reflects the SRD version of the template (which does not list spell-like abilities, IIRC).
Jindl

12-11-03, 01:04 PM
The duergar is a decent +1 LA. Immunity to poison, phantasms, and paralysis. Normal dwarven goodies. Spell-like enlarge person and invisibility. It's in the MM.

HALF-CELESTIAL
No matter the form, half-celestials are always comely and delightful to the senses, having golden skin, sparkling eyes, angelic wings, or some other sign of their higher nature.
CREATING A HALF-CELESTIAL
Spell-Like Abilities: A half-celestial with an Intelligence or Wisdom score of 8 or higher has two or more spell-like abilities, depending on its Hit Dice, as indicated on the table below. The abilities are cumulative
Unless otherwise noted, an ability is usable once per day. Caster level equals the creature’s HD, and the save DC is Charisma-based.
HD Abilities
1–2 Protection from evil 3/day, bless
3–4 Aid, detect evil
5–6 Cure serious wounds, neutralize poison
7–8 Holy smite, remove disease
9–10 Dispel evil
11–12 Holy word
13–14 Holy aura 3/day, hallow
15–16 Mass charm monster
17–18 Summon monster IX (celestials only)
19–20 Resurrection

Anyway, I think the BoED version is designed to be based off racial HD only. Its still overpowered, but with Smite evil +1, SR of 11, DR 5/magic, and only Protection from evil and Bless (at caster level 1  ) for spell like abilities, it is *closer* to +2. In all seriousness, though, it would be worth +2 with only the Outsider type an ability mods. Thank goodness for overpowered templates!

Half-fey after the 3.5 conversion book is nutty. Wings and DR 5/cold iron, plus immunity to mind-affecting spells and unbalanced stat mods, plus charm person at will. Fun.

Of course, magic-blooded is just ridiculous. Why doesn't every wizard or sorcerer take this template if they can? Ditto for arctic and rangers/druids/barbarians. Who doesn't like a free con boost and a bonus to survival?

The Shadow Walker template from Unapproachable East is well worth the +1 ECL in my opinion.
Raene Jagad

12-12-03, 08:21 AM
White Dragonspwan is entirely delightful (as someone mentioned above). NAC 7, Bite, 2 claws, flight at double base, crap breath weapon, +2 Dex and Con, lowlight, darkvision 30ft and a level of sorceror spellcasting it is stupidly overpowered. :D

The only downside is that you have to have the alignment of the parent dragon which can be a real pain in a Dragonlance campaign (CE for white).

On the other hand if you read the text description

"Created through a hideous method that transforms humanoids into draconianlike creatures by fusing the mind and soul of the victim with the shard of a draconian's .... etc"

If you ever feel like an enforced alignment change to CE then this one works! Just pray your DM decides that you are one of the few transformed beings that have retained their free will because otherwise you are a puppet of the Dragon Overlord who transformed you!

I don't remember the name of the race, but either in the MM2 or the Fiend Folio there's a Planetouched race descended from Lawful Neutral creatures that has the special ability of using lightning "damage" to restore HP. If you want to play an outsider sorceror, that would be the race to use.

Like PhaedrusXY said, the Shadow Walker template (U.E.) is cool for +1LA. There is also the Ghost Elf from Dragon 313 (among a BOOTY load of other new races in the mag). If you're Playing a straight rouge type, the ghost elf is even better. You can turn "blink" on (among its other powers) and sneak attack with EVERY attack that hits! OUCH!

One of my favorites is the +2LA of Crypt Spawn. You are undead, you get natural armor that increases with your HD, bonuses to intimidate, and again, you are UNDEAD (look at the undead immunity list).

It can hurt as much as it can help too though. I don't gain the benefits from our group bard, and I can't be healed conventionally.

But I don't eat, sleep, or have to even roll on most saves that the rest of the group does. :D I also have one hell of an intimidate (which is one of my favorite skills).

Other than that, I think shadow is cool, but I think it is+4LA. The deep orc is really cool too. I can't remember their LA (I think only +1) or their name other than deep orc. It is in the ROF though. I think they get a lot of stat bonuses.

Mechanatrix in the Fiend Folio allows Shocking Grasp once per day and heals 1 point of damage for every 3 points of lightning damage you otherwise would take.

Also has cold and fire resistance and is an outsider.

The Sanctified creature template is quite nice for creatures lacking in special abilities. For, say, a formerly evil Half-minotaur or human, the Magic circle against evil, Aura of menace, and Light ray are well worth +2 LA. Of course, you wouulden't want to add it to anything that wouuld actually stand to loose any abilities of importance.

Then again, them template seems rather poortly written. It says that it cannot be added to Outsiders with the evil subtype, and then goes on to descible how adding the template affects Outsiders with the evil subtype. In addition, the Young red dragon is listed as retaining it's breath weapon, which the template clearly states it looses. It also seems to have lost its spellcasting.

A pretty damn nifty race is the Bladeling from MM2. It's a +1 ECL Outsider with a favored class of Fighter.

For +1 ECL, you get:

1. Medium Size and Speed 30'.
2. Two 1d6 Claw Attacks (virtual Imp. Unarmed Combat feat).
3. DR = 5/Magic (Slashing & Piercing Weapons only).
4. Fire & Cold Resistance 5.
5. Immunity to acid & rust attacks.
6. Darkvision 60'.
7. DEX +2 ... and no stat penalties!
8. Razor Storm (Ex): 1/Day you spray in a 15' cone a 2d6 piercing shrapnel attack.
9. +4 Natural Armor .... +2 for 24 hours if you use your Razor Storm.
10. You look wicked cool.

A damn good bargain if you ask me.

**

My party Cleric has one as a cohort. Whenever my Trickster casts Acid Fog on some poor hapless slobs, we send in Mr. Spiny with a reach weapon and Freedom of Movement & Blindsightcast on him and he mops up the slowed & acid-sizzled victims. Fun!

It's the Fey HD that turned me off them. Like so many other racial dice, I can't really accept Fey HD as worth class levels. Hide in Plain Sight might, arguably, make up for it, but it's still generally easier to work in a level of Shadowdancer.

I know it's not a +1/+2 but has anyone ever played a Maug from F.F.? [Tolkien nerd]Well, Olog-hai (the creatures depicted at the end of RotK) are probably closer to D&D ogres (really big, tough ogres) than to D&D trolls. They're not spiny and rubbery, they don't regenerate, and they seem to get much more mileage out of big weapons than out of claws and teeth.

Incidentally, Bilbo's trolls were probably Stone-trolls; a slightly less powerful ilk of creature than the Cave-trolls of Moria. Olog-hai were still more powerful than either breed, "Trolls of great cunning and agility who could endure the Sun as long as Sauron's will was with them... great beasts with the reasoning intelligence of Men."[/Tolkien nerd]

Back OT: Saint isn't a template you can actually choose, though, which is why it's got an artificially low LA. Sorta makes it not so good from a min-max perspective.

If you go with the BoED, though, you can get half-celestial for LA +2, which, IMHO, is definitely worth it. The template is strong at +3, and a must-have for paladin, hospitaler, and HL builds.

unfortunetly their are no ogres in tolkien's world, i would have been interesting how Peter Jackson depicted them in his movies. Hopefully when ever the hobbit gets done we get to see smogg and the five army war (i think that is the name of the battle at the end of hobbit).

Maugs are +3 LA (5 ECL), btw.

I love Maugs, but I have difficulty making goods builds for them. Their abominable 2 construct HD really get in the way since they can't be replaced by class HD. They're immune to practically everything, which is good because they have lousy hit points and pathetic saves. Paradoxically, despite their huge STR and 15 max caster level I think they make better wizards than fighters. Having a mandatory +0 CON bonus makes them meat at the front lines. The immunities are great for wizards, as is their high DEX and INT (or CHA). Concentrating on no-SR/no-save spells mitigates your lower caster level, most of which are below 8th level anyway. Low CON and low Fortitude saves makes you terribly vulnerable to Disintegrate, though.
