1/2 caster level worth it? (general question) [Archive] - Wizards Community

Anyone out there like any of the every other level spell progression classes, i.e. Holy Purifier, Prestige Paladin, et al?

I mean, I just generally say 'meh' upon seeing that you lose five caster levels and think it can't be worth it. Anyone disagree?

There are two possibilities:
1) You can try progressing a class that already has a fast spell progression (e.g. a Duskblade 6/Suel Arcanamach 6/Green Star Adept 8 would have full Suel Arcanamach spellcasting at level 20).
2) You can try progressing a class where the spells are not the main focus of your build (e.g. Paladin 10/Hospitaler 10).

There are some pretty crappy 1/2-progression classes out there, though.

1/2 progression PrC's are sometimes useful for gish builds that run on low-level buff spells.

Primary spellcasters, however, are wise to avoid them.

And they're useful for dips. Spellsword1 is often used to bridge Wiz4 and Eldritch Knight. Even Spellsword5 only loses 2 caster levels and is used in many gish builds.

But, yes, for the most part they're useless.

It depends what I gain in exchange for those caster levels, and whether casting is crucial for my character (or if losing those upper levels doesn't affect my character too much).

So... looks like most people agree, though there are exceptions. That's what I was thinking, just eyeballing them.

The entropomancer is kind of scary at 10th level if you can get your hands on a sphere. Of course, if the DM is nutty enough to give you a sphere of annihilation to fling around (oh sure, I'll just keep it in my bag of holding  ), he's either crazy or has something really scary in store.
