1/2 decent spellcaster templates/races [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-27-04, 11:05 PM i need enough templates and/or a monster race to add up to 10 ecl or more. lich (several varieties) and insectle have been examined. anyone know any other effective ones that either grant arcane spellcasting or make you significantly better at it? the character will have to end up good-aligned.

03-27-04, 11:19 PM A 5 hit die or higher sylph is one of the better arcane casters at that point, casting as a 9th level sorcerer at ECL 10. (Monster Manual II)

A drider could cast as a 6th level wizard or sorcerer at ECL 10. (Monster Manual)

A fensir could be interesting to play with some type of +1 template, though it only gets a +2 Int bonus it casts as a 5th level wizard with 4 giant hit dice at ECL 9. (Fiend Folio)

A juvenile phaerimm with 6 hit dice casts as a 6th level sorcerer and is ECL 9. With a +1 level adjustment template this could be a very interesting character to play, since it gets phaerimm magic (treat sorcerer spells as spell-like abilities) plus quite a few other abilities. If you wanted to go for 7 hit dice and 7th level casting, you would end up as a young adult with some more abilities and an ECL of 11. Either way you're losing 4 caster levels (unless using the white dragonspawn template), so I would probably go with the latter.(Monsters of Faerun/3.5 Update)

The phaerimm's opposites, the sharn, are one of the better new deals at an ECL of 9 or greater and spellcasting starting as a 7th level sorcerer and 5th level cleric with the option to buy new caster levels with hit dice. (Monsters of Faerun/3.5 Update)

Ethergaunts in varying colors range from ECL 12 to 20 and typically have good wizard casting and tremendous Int bonuses. (Fiend Folio)

As for templates, I probably wouldn't reccommend most of them unless you need them, such as in the case of the fensir. To push your ECL up a bit like that, some +1 or +2 templates that could be of use would probably be dragon blooded (Draconomicon) or possibly Chameleon Creature (Underdark) if you don't have reach and like touch spells. There are a number of others, any +1 template would be decent really so long as it isn't underpowered and doesn't penalize your casting stat.

03-27-04, 11:27 PM Sylph, which was mentioned, is a good choice as it provides Sorc casting levels.

White Dragonspawn, from the DLCS, is ECL +1 and gives +1 Sorc spellcasting along with a slew of abilities. Very powerful for the ECL.

EDIT: White DS is a template.
