okay, I am still in the slow process of upgrading to 3.5; am mostly not familiar with the new rules and concepts, but I am working on it. I've checked the faq's and such, but am just wondering - what would you say is the most powerful 1st level character in 3.5? I know 'most powerful' can be widely varied; but I am asking for your opinions . . . :)

What about lower-mid level classes, such as 4th or 5th; where PrCs can't really come into play - what build would you say makes the most powerful character?

[edit - had another question in the post, answered it myself :)]

Sorceror because he casts Magic Missile more then anyone else. That's pretty freaking far away.

Gestault is a very powerful variant in Unearthed Arcana that gives class features of two classes at the same time. It's essentially two classes in one.

Strongest first level character? Probably the barbarian, same as ever. They generally have the most HP and best attack bonus at level 1.

i opt for the rogue. if you have some tank in the group you can easily dish out more damage due to your sneak-dice (just use a greatsword as well).
with the skillpoints you can excel in basketweaving as well as other important areas.

Barbarian is very good. after 1 lvl of barb you can take 1 lvl of fighter and take toughness 1 or 2 times. (really rocks on such low levels)

Druid - the animal companion is very useful at first level. It's like getting an extra fighter, and you still get to keep your spellcasting.

The following are some pretty common prefices that are pretty powerful in their own area all the way through.

Bbn 2/Ftr4 - Snow's tank prefix from Sword and Shield (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=201375)
Rog 3/Bbn 1/Ftr 2 - Funny's Holy Liberator (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=108673) prefix
Ftr 2/Sor 4 - Joseph Kell's Gish (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=150451) prefix

with level 6 as the telling point with general power all the way through I would also include

Wiz 6 (CL 6, 3rd level spells, better than wiz five by a long shot due to saves and BAB, bonus feats)
Drd 6 (Wildshape and Natural Spell)
