Hello all! I am starting in a new campaign soon. I am wanting to play an unarmed fighter with heavy armor. It will be from 1st level. What race do you suggest? What feats do you guys suggest? I was thinking human with Improved Unarmed Strike and Versatile Unarmed Strike. It will be 32 point buy. I have access to (and can use) PHB, DMG, XPH, PHB2, Comp. Warrior, Comp. Arcane, Comp. Divine, Comp. Adventurer, Comp. Psionic, Heroes of Horror and Magic of Incarnum for this campaign. I will probably be getting Tome of Battle after bills are paid, lol. Thanks for any input oh ye the gods of optimization.

For a straight fighter, Complete Warrior and PHB2 are essential.

Everything else is negotiable.

Unarmed fighter means you SHOULD take level 1 Monk as your first class. You can multiclass out to fighter after. You jib yourself taking level 1 fighter and using your feat on Improved Unarmed Combat.

Pay the bills. Get Tome of Battle. Play a Warblade. They are superior to the Fighter in every single way.

If you're gonna do that. Take Improved grapple and be a grappler.

Grapplers can be extremely powerful at early levels.

Unarmed fighters can be cool to play, now you will need to get improved natural attack from MM into your build, and when you pick up ToB go for the Superior Unarmed Fighter, also in ToB you will want to look at Snap Kick. The Two Weapon feat tree is also nice in this build. For higher levels the Reaping Mauler might be a good PrC for you but i prefer Initiate of the Draconic Mysteries in the Draconomicon. I have made a pretty good Dwarven Unarmed Fighter the stability racial trait is nice for grapplers.

Hope this helps

Definitely Monk. They're superior to Fighters in every single way for unarmed combat. If want the bonus feats, take monastic training so that you can freely multiclass between the two. SIUP is better when you're a monk, and you can get a Monk's Belt for +5 levels of damage (and AC bonus).

A single class build from the Single Class Build Thread for unarmed fighter

There are two great feats for that unarmed fighter in Tome of battle, Superior unarmed damage gives you a progression for your unarmed strike damage that's a little slower than that of a Monk, and Snap kick allows you to make another unarmed strike when making a full attack, albeit all attacks come with a -2 penalty to hit.

Player's handbook II has really good feats for a Fighter in general.

That is all hope this helps!

Superior unarmed strike and snap kick from Tome of Battle are vital for this build. If you want to wear heavy armor, use spiked gauntlets and armor spikes and forget going unarmed.
