| ChancingChaos01-05-05, 02:41 PM | I am going to be playing in a 1st level Planescape campaign and need some advice/pointers on surviving. Besides myself, there is a rogue, a barbarian, 2 clerics, and a fighter. I decided to be the arcane person. I got to roll my stats and ended up getting really lucky. Gray Elf Wizard (DMG) STR 12 DEX 20 CON 16 INT 20 WIS 16 CHA 15 I thought about specializing but I wouldn't know what to specialize in. Do I really need to be able to do anything with 2 clerics? What spells/schools are absolutely necessary for Planescape? Here's what I have in mind right now: 1- Summon Familiar, Scribe Scroll, Spell Focus (?) 3- Greater Spell Focus (?) 4- +1 INT 5- Craft Wand 6- Empower Spell 8- +1 INT 9- Craft Wondrous Item 10- Energy Substitution (?) 12- +1 INT, Quicken Spell 15- Maximize Spell, Spell Penetration 16- +1 INT 18- Greater Spell Penetration 20- Craft Rod, Forge Ring That's just my general idea. As far as prestige classes go, I can use CORE and the Complete Series. I was also leaning to take a few levels of Archmage (would change around feats, etc). Mastery of Elements being the main reason. Remember: Planscape :) I want to be ready for anything if it's at all possible. Thanks guys. Edit: I can also use Unearthed Arcana |
| Battousai01-05-05, 05:13 PM | EDIT , didn't read everything. Well you can't use Planar Handbook it seems. If you have access to Complete Arcane , look at the Alienist , could be a fun character to play in a Planescape campaign. |
| ChancingChaos01-06-05, 05:33 AM | Update: I decided to go Wizard 7/Loremaster 10/Wis 10 1- Skill Focus (Knowledge [Arcana]) 3- Empower Spell 4- +1 INT 5- Heighten Spell 6- Craft Wondrous Item 8- +1 INT 10- Applicable Knowledge: Energy Substitution (Acid) 12- +1 INT, Maximize Spell 15- Quicken Spell 16- +1 INT 18- Spell Penetration 20- +1 INT, Greater Spell Penetration It doesn't look too bad if I do say so myself. I like the idea of playing a Gray Elf whose only drive in life is the thrill of gaining more knowledge from the best sources imaginable; The Planes. Edit: With Complete Arcane Having the "Orb of [...]" series of spells, are Energy Substitution feats even worth taking? Also, it would be good if I had Craft Magic Arms and Armor or other crafting feats? And what about Maximize Spell versus Empower Spell? Should Still Spell and Silent Spell be considered? |
| Funny Slaughter01-06-05, 09:38 AM | try to get the planar handbook in, i think the ardent dilletante would fit your character very nicely! gs Funny |
| Sir Gummibaerchen01-06-05, 12:32 PM | I wouldn't bother with maximize spell/heighten spell/energy substitution/craft feats. Pick leadership instead. Have an artificer for your cohort. You should pick the (greater) spell penetration feats earlier, seeing that many creatures from CR 15 on will have SR. I'd go: Wizard7/Loremaster2/Wild Mage1/Loremaster10/Wild Mage3 1-Scribe Scroll, Summon Familiar, Skill Focus(Knowledge[religion]) 3-Empower Spell 5-Chain Spell 6-Magical Aptitude 8-Secret:Instant Mastery (UMD) 9-Practiced Spellcaster 10-Wild Magic 11-Secret:Applicable Knowledge:Leadership 12-Quicken Spell 13-Secret:The lore of true stamina 15-Secret:Newfound arcana, Spell Penetration 17-Secret:More newfound arcana 18-Greater Spell Penetration Saves: 8/8/13 Combining Practiced Spellcaster with Wild Mage gives you a free caster level increase of 1d6 everytime you cast a spell. |
| Ravashack01-06-05, 01:09 PM | Try to get the Planar Handbook in. :) (Like what people are saying) It has the Prestige Classes for quite a bit of the factions. Ardent Dilletante is the class for Sensates, for example. |
| ChancingChaos01-07-05, 07:11 AM | Not able to use Planar Handbook so I'm pretty much stuck with what I got. As a final build, here's what I think works pretty good for what I have available: Gray Elf Wizard 7/Loremaster 10/Wizard 10 1- Skill Focus (Knowledge [Arcana]) 3- Enlarge Spell [+1 Spell Slot] 5- Empower Spell [+2 Spell Slot] 6- Energy Substitution (Acid) 9- Craft Wondrous Item 10- Applicable Knowledge: Energy Substitution (Cold) 12- Spell Penetration 15- Quicken Spell [+4 Spell Slot] 18- Energy Admixture [+4 Spell Slot] 20- Greater Spell Penetration I don't think playing it to level 20 will be too difficult. Any further suggestions would be great. Please remember that I can only use CORE, the Complete Series, and Unearthed Arcana. |
