| Markus.l06-28-04, 04:42 PM | I'm playing in an eberron campaign as a 1st level Warforged Wizard (going the Wiz4/Clr 1/DweomerKeeper (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20040522a) 10 route) with the Adamantine armor feat. Our DM is allowing either 2 flaws or 2 traits, not both. Should I take the 2 flaws & get the increased DR/4 (or other feats that you suggest)... OR Just take 2 traits: Spell-gifted & Aggressive and forgo the nasty penalties of the flaws? |
| Vapor IX06-28-04, 05:04 PM | You can never have enough feats. Go with the flaws. Take Noncombatant and Shaky, or something similar. You should be able to do enough with your spells that combat won't do much for you anyway. |
| pawsplay06-28-04, 10:03 PM | Noncombatant will tank your ranged touch, though, won't it? |
| Markus.l06-28-04, 10:11 PM | Originally posted by pawsplay Noncombatant will tank your ranged touch, though, won't it? No because it's RANGED. Now regular touch attack, I believe, WILL be hampered by the -2 because it is melee. |
| Snow Savant06-28-04, 10:12 PM | Seeing as how ranged touch attack spells are generally not neccessary anyway .... it's no big loss. Getting around them is pretty easy. If you can get the 2 free feats, you *GO*, Boy! XO, Snow :cloud9: |
| Markus.l06-28-04, 10:20 PM | LOL! Thanx Snow. What would you suggest? I've read Yoshi's (Spelling) Wiz handbook but I'm still hesitant NOT to take the 2 extra DR feats for a total of 4/Adam. Your thoughts? BTW which would you rather have: A free augment summon feat or a 1/day empower 1 spell with no level cost ability? |
| CrimsonRyoko06-28-04, 10:40 PM | Isnt that 35% ASF going to put a dampener on the whole wizard thing especially early on? Does Eberron have any reducing feats? Anyway - Flaws are worth it unless your playing a char that plans on doing EVERYTHING well. . . . any two feats for a wizard are worth 2 melee BAB, and -4 spot/listen. (my fav flaws to take) |
| Markus.l06-28-04, 10:48 PM | Originally posted by CrimsonRyoko Isnt that 35% ASF going to put a dampener on the whole wizard thing especially early on? Does Eberron have any reducing feats? UNFORTUNATLY not. I'm going to have to go with the Still feat and cast all my spells as one level higher :( At least I'll be able to walk around with 2 tower shields then ;p |
| CrimsonRyoko06-28-04, 11:05 PM | Hmmm. . . seems to me that a Wizard3/Cleric3/Geomancer10(Wiz progression)/DweomerKeeper4 might be best. . . . you can cast your arcane spells as divine, plus you get to watch your dm have an embolism when he tries to find a way to make Drifts work on a Warforged :D ;) |
| Snow Savant06-28-04, 11:08 PM | Markus, Your 2 bonus feats depend on a lot of other criteria and party dynamics. And yes, I think they trump the 4/Adam you could take as a Warforged Wizard. Primarily because if you are a Wizard, you ought to focus on making your Wizardly prowess strong over making your melee survival prowess strong. Granted, the whole Warforged Wizard angle is not a real optimized power-play, although I give you a ton of style points and a bag of chutzpah for giving it a go. Ideally, if you insisted on doing the Warforged Wizard, you'd be better off starting at a higher game level, since Silent Spelling your spells (which is a good idea) will handcuff you hardcore at early levels. Your road will not be an easy one, my friend ... especially at level 1. What are your stats ... and party composite? |
| CrimsonRyoko06-28-04, 11:11 PM | Ya know, at level 1, anyone sucks anyway...... just about any character can enter melee fairly well and survive, just make sure you have a cleric on hand. . . . and if you have inate armor anyway, as ya do, you can be melee happy anyhoo. So until level 3 you could just melee it out with a staff, and casting spells like Shield in battle to boost your melee. . . even go with other stuff like magic weapon. . . do wizzies get that? meh.... just an idea |

Your road will not be an easy one, my friend ... especially at level 1. What are your stats ... and party composite? You’re telling ME?! This is what we have thus far: Half-Elf Ranger Kalashtar Psion Shifter Soulknife 34 point buy [with +2 Con, -2 Wis & Cha. Includes Pathetic Cha & Noncombatant flaws]: 8 Str 12 Dex (Max +1 dex mod with armor) 20 Con 16 Int 10 Wis 4 Cha I WAS thinking of going the Dweomerkeeper route but might give that up in hopes that there is a great PrC in the Complete Arcana (December release). If all else fails then I’ll just take the Elemental Savant because as it stands I’m playing a U.A. Evoker (Fire) |
| Snow Savant06-28-04, 11:26 PM | Ouch. No Trapfinding Rogue. No Tank (unless the Ranger is of the high-CON/STR variety). No Cleric. In essence, it looks likes you got 2 primary spellcaster types (Psion and you) ... and 2 mobility combatants. I can see why you are looking for the boost to your Adamantium armor. Not much protection for you on the frontline... Are you guys sure that's the tack you want to take? |
| Markus.l06-28-04, 11:41 PM | Originally posted by Snow Savant Ouch. ...Are you guys sure that's the tack you want to take? This is a new group that I'm gaming with and I believe they are all set in their ways, so it'll be up to ME to save my own skin (the various repair spells in the Mini Handbook). |
| amalcon06-29-04, 02:58 AM | A few points here: 1. Definitely, take the flaws. I'd go with Noncombatant and Feeble (how often do you actually make these kinds of checks as a non-fighter?). You can do better than +2 initiative with a feat (Improved Initiative, Blooded, whatever), and while +1 caster level is nice, +1 save DCs is nicer, plus the drawbacks aren't as bad for you as the drawbacks on your traits. 2. Introducing the Alter Self trick: When you cast Alter Self, you get to lose your armor, hehe, finally this works to your advantage ;) May well be worth it 3rd-7th level at least (that's when you get to cast your level 3 spells stilled -- at 3rd/4th level you can try to cast it multiple times and hope it works, Sudden still it, or use a rod of stilling if you can convince your DM that they exist and find one) 3. The Supernatural Spell strikes again! No somatic component All in all, this might actually work. I know I'd certainly like to see it. |

Speed can always be upped with boots of flying, expeditious retreat and the mount spell. Originally posted by amalcon 2. | amalcon06-29-04, 10:38 PM | Originally posted by Markus.l One word: Concentration Point taken. Inattentive will probably work, as the ranger will probably have good enough senses to make up for the whole party. Slow is actually much nicer than I'd initially realized now that I think of it, because you'll want to cast alter self anyway, which gives you the footspeed of what you turn into. |
| TheReapingMauler06-29-04, 10:52 PM | On a side note, are you playing this on unlimitedrpgs.com? If so, I'm in the party too, spiked chain fighter. Should be interesting. I ask because thats the exact party that's been posted there. |

Excellent point too! I’ll have to look into alternate “alter self” forms because we’re only allowed the 3 core’s, the Complete’s, Exalted deeds, Mini's Handbook, Expanded Psionics Handbook, Unearthed Arcana and of course Eberron.
