Something in my head tells me there is a +20 in race/template/something else, but the indexing part of my head cannot find it.

Any ideas?

Black Ethergaunt? A favorite on these boards.

Very powerful yet gameplay is hampered by their inability to communicate with party members. Many on these boards like to overlook this little detail.

Yeah, and the important "fluff" text. You know, the part that says if an Ethergaunt is ever caught cohorting with creatures on the material plane it is to be hunted down and killed. It's the little stuff like that that people overlook.

Could you elaborate--HD, LA, and why can't they communicate?

Besides, min/maxing isn't about communicating; min/maxing is about being all kinds of awesome.

If you're a 16th-level arcane caster and you can't figure out an alternate method to communicate with your fellow party members, you should probably turn in your wizard's hat and magic wand.

The sarrukh from serpent kingdoms get +20 int as well, among other nice goodies, making it a choice target for polymorph any object at lv15.:)

A +20 Int template would be awesome.... ok instead of gaining one extra 6th lvl spell i increase all my spell DCs by 10 and get some funky bonus spells!

16 aberration HD, +4 LA, but they cast as level 17 wizards. Really good attribute bonuses, +15 natural AC, immunity to arcane spells of 6th level and lower, naturally ethereal, etc. Very, very good, and very, very strong. They can't talk simply because they don't have mouths :P

The modifier is the stat -10 if the stat is even, stat -11 if it's odd

I know how to get a MOD of +20, thats would be a 50 stat.

From what I read int he original post, I took it to believe that he was looking for a Template/ monster that gave you +20 to your Intelligence score.

And the Black Ethergaunt does.

Also, as for the boards ignoring fluffy stuff... they do. It's obvious. Unless explicitly asked for, the people on the boards tend to ignore fluff, houserules, party members, DMs, and sanity. I completely understand why, however. =P

And where does it say that someone making a Black Ehtergaunt a playable character receives a +20 to their Int. score?

Because the Monster itself has a score of 50. When converting it to a playable race that makes it a [(50-10)/2]=20 bonus.

If you want the rules on converting a monster to a playable race, that should be in the MM or DMG or something. I don't feel like digging it out.

Actually... it's [31-11] = +20 int.

Agreed, Blackie is one sick puppy. I'd love to play a savage progression for that one.

But it's 16HD, too high for polymorpg any object cheese + it's an aberration so making it permanent would take some planning. And it's special abilities don't count.

Sarrukh (serpent kingdoms) is monstruos humanoid with 14HD and an int score of 30. (+18 natural ac, str 23 and con 20 help too). LA+8 though.

only if your using polymorph any object as its the only polymorphing spell thats specifically states you gain the int of the creature or object you take the form of. Also You'd best not put any level gained ability increases in int because the change is a specific change so anything you had previous that wasnt granted by wearing a on going effect magic item (headband of int) will just be wasted if the change in int is lower or isnt really a big jump. So something like a 12 int (+6 headband) allows you to cast the spell then you benefit more from the change.

Polymorph any object grants you Str, Dex, Con and Int scores of the new form (Cha and Wis only if your old form didn't have them), so you should only put stats int Wis and Cha. Keep Int just high enough to cast the spell. And any headband will be useable after the polymorph (so with a headband of intelect +6 you'd have 36 int).
