In a few days me & 7 friends are playing a 20th level arena tournament.
The rules are:
1 on 1
only buff & healing spells allowed
760, 000 Gp
books allowed are PHB, DMG, BOVD. BOED & complete warrior
Races are PHB & there subraces only!
its a 1 on 1 knock out tournament
The arena is 1000*1000 with combatatents starting 300ft from each other.
no alignment restrictions so vile & exalted allowed

What type of character would be good for this type of fight? I was thinking a pure level 20 ranger (dont know which race), having human, dwarf, gnome, halfling & elf as favoured enemies (so everyone), taking the TWF tree, improved favoured enemy, favoured power attack & a nasty pair of +5 rapiers with the hunting & speed enhancements.
I was also considering ranger with archery style, perfect rapid shot, a +5 hunting speeded great composite bow(+5 str bonus).

Is the ranger a good idea? i figured that i can fully exploit favoured enemy in a situation when the opposition is definetly going to be a favoured enemy & i can use a wand of cure light wounds to heal me.
If i go ranger what should my emphasis go on for stats or does that depend on whether i go TWF or ranged?

If it helps im pretty sure that they'll be a couple of barbarians (most likely one will be exalted or vile) & a few rogues aswell. Im also sure there will be no paladins or other rangers.

Just one question.... Is shapechange considered a 'buff' spell? If so, you could easily just turn into a beholder and then disintegrate stuff (it's not a spell, it's a Supernatural Ability).

However, I'm sure that's just a little too rules-lawyerish for your or your DM's tastes.

Really, if only buffing spells are allowed, I'd think of going with a Druid. Wildshape yourself into an Octopus Tree (FF), or even just a Tendriculous, they both have grapple bonuses of around +30. Alternatively, you could choose something like a Dire Bear, Dire Tiger, or Tyranosaurus (dinosaurs are animals in 3.5), and then cast Animal Growth upon yourself. A Tyranosaurus normally has a grapple bonus of +30; a 20th level Druid Wildshaped into a T-rex with Animal Growth would have a +40 Grapple bonus.

Just get the opponent in a grapple and hold them in the grapple, dealing bite damage each round.

Also, with the absence of attack spells, you don't have to worry about rays, thus, your biggest weakness (touch attacks) are negated.

It's just a thought, but one I think would work very well given the parameters you have provided.

Yes, Druid 20 would be very strong but...

...Monk 1/Druid 19 would be stronger though.

It seems fairly clear to me...The wearer’s AC and unarmed damage is treated as a monk of five levels higher ... If the character is not a monk, she gains the AC and unarmed damage of a 5th-level monk.AC Bonus (Ex): When unarmored and unencumbered, the monk adds her Wisdom bonus (if any) to her AC. In addition, a monk gains a +1 bonus to AC at 5th level. So, depending upon your DM's chosen interpretation, a Monk's Belt and a Wilding Clasp is better than a level of Monk...you don't lose caster levels.

what about a 1-2 Barb/ 8-9 vl wiz/ 10 lvl rage mage?

with 10th lvl rage mage you can do a tenser transformation (giving you the best attacks) and still cast spells etc b/c it's a special type that doesn't make you crazy in the head.

You get:

increased speed to get across those 300ft
increased Str and Con from rage (+will)
and with arcane strike you can convert all those spell casting lvls into real damage. 1d4 per spell lvl for all attacks that round and it's a free action! Take some 7-8th lvl ones and bean the guy for base damage + 8d4 extra and do it 5 times (tensers).

Also you get good buff spells like stoneskin etc.

just a thought...but i heard snow is the all powerful of this site.

Pick a Frenzied Berzerer, tons of stuff to boost Will saves and plenty of healing potions for after you kill the oppnents.

You almost can't lose in hand to hand combat.

My trouble with this is that i really hate grappling & being grappled. A +40 grapple bonus isnt going to be that good because of that annoying close quarters fighting, pity the druid to tries to grapple a THF with this feat. Howerver, the big cat idea does appeal to me....if nothing better comes up ill probaly go with a druid/warshaper as a legendary tiger & have magic items made for my tigerform, a dire tiger companion & use animal growth. Fully buffed strength of 48 & pounce= pain.

what about a 1-2 Barb/ 8-9 vl wiz/ 10 lvl rage mage?
just find out last night that another player is going to be playing a champion of gwhynarfi (what ever its called), which seem to be pretty much the same as the rage mage in a no-offensive spells fight, actuallymaybe even better ( a barbarian with righteous might is just nasty!)

Ok, i really don't like FB, i have a personal vendetta against them & again,i hear the other barbarian is going to be using this Prc.

But these characters have given me an idea, an elusive target based build (most annoying thing for a FB ever must be negate power attack) who fights with a reach weapon & has a really high Ac, as such is there a monk reach weapon that i can flurry with & possibly set against a charge?
