| raidzuo10-09-06, 09:12 AM | I'm entering a game that needs a tank. We will be fighting mostly undead and spell casters. It's a high-powered campaign point buy. I have 12 levels to work with, and I must be human. I can only use the player's/DMG/ and any of the complete books. Update: It's finished! I never thought to do lots of low level classes for the build. He's going to be: Swashbuckler 1 (for reaping mauler skills and +BAB), Fighter level 2 (for feats and armor), Barbarian 2 (for health, rage, and dodge), Reaping Mauler 1 (for bear form grapple syngery, and a +BAB filler for frenzied berserker), Frenzied Berserker 1 (for Diehard, an extra bear form, and preperation for deathless frenzy), and Bear Warrior 5; for insane stat bonuses and feats. He has no items, keep that in mind. Thanks everyone! Goa (In Bear form), Male Human SwBklr1/Ftr2/Bbn2/ReMlr1/Fbe1/BearW5: CR 12; Large Animal ; HD 1d10+9(Swashbuckler) , 2d10+18(Fighter) , 2d12+18(Barbarian) , 1d10+9(Reaping Mauler) , 1d12+9(Frenzied Berserker) , 5d12+45(Bear Warrior) ; hp 204; Init +2; Spd 50; AC:16 (Flatfooted:16 Touch:10); Atk +21/16/11 base melee, +14/9/4 base ranged; +21/16/11 (1d3+9, Unarmed strike); SA: Improved Grab (Ex) ; AL CG; SV Fort +25, Ref +5, Will +12; STR 29, DEX 15, CON 28, INT 10, WIS 10, CHA 13. Skills: Escape Artist +11, Intimidate +13, Jump +29, Listen +10, Survival +5, Swim +16, Tumble +13. Feats: Armor Proficiency: heavy, Armor Proficiency: light, Armor Proficiency: medium, Cleave, Clever Wrestling, Destructive Rage, Diehard, Endurance, Improved Grapple, Improved Unarmed Strike, Intimidating Rage, Mad Foam Rager, Mobility, Power Attack, Run, Shield Proficiency, Simple Weapon Proficiency, Steadfast Determination, Tower Shield Proficiency, Track, Weapon Finesse. |
| FriendlyFrog10-09-06, 09:19 AM | A racial bonus to constitution would be a start, a Dwarf would have 12 more HP. Also, Improved tougness would give another 12. |
| Ashkenaz10-09-06, 09:26 AM | I highly suggest you get higher AC in one way or another. 11 AC for a tank is pretty dangerous, unless you want the cleric to burn half his spells on healing you. |
| Reyhan10-09-06, 09:49 AM | Dominate Person against you is very dangerous for your party ^_^ Try: Ranger 2/ Monk 2/ Fighter 2/ Pious Templar 6 (Dwarf as possible) Feats: Endurance, Steadfast Determination (PH2), Indomitable Soul (PH2) |
| ninjarabbit10-09-06, 10:02 AM | You really really need to get that AC up. All the hps in the world won't manner if your foes can do a full power attack and only miss you on a 1. At the very least buy a wand of mage armor and have a wizard or someone with a maxed out Use Magic Device use it on you. |
| raidzuo10-09-06, 10:09 AM | There's no items on him! That's why the AC is so low. The DM will give me my items later. |

Then again our party has a wizard and a cleric so they can fix that. By the way, won't my XP suck from multi-classing? |
| raidzuo10-09-06, 10:13 AM | A racial bonus to constitution would be a start, a Dwarf would have 12 more HP. Also, Improved tougness would give another 12. I can't be human. Besides, if I went dwarf then I would have to take frenzied berserker at level 9 instead of level 6 (you need 4 feats for FB); making my bear warrior level 3 -- losing +4 con from not being able to use brown bear form. Being a dwarf means less HP! |
| PhaedrusXY10-09-06, 10:30 AM | Haha I know! Then again our party has a wizard and a cleric so they can fix that. By the way, won't my XP suck from multi-classing?You don't take any XP penalties for prestige classes at all, or for base classes that are 1 level apart or less. So no, that build does not take any XP penalties. |
| appleshot10-09-06, 11:34 AM | it seems to me that bear warrior is sub par because in the bear form bonus they state that you can't stack them with rage and frenzy bonus. just my 2 cents |
| raidzuo10-09-06, 11:43 AM | it seems to me that bear warrior is sub par because in the bear form bonus they state that you can't stack them with rage and frenzy bonus. just my 2 cents Don't need to stack them. What I have up there is what it is. Besides, +20 str is fine by me. |
| raidzuo10-09-06, 11:46 AM | You don't take any XP penalties for prestige classes at all, or for base classes that are 1 level apart or less. So no, that build does not take any XP penalties. At any rate, I don't see why it would make a better tank. Here is a stat block using those levels. Praesul, Male Dwarf, Hill Mnk2/Ftr2/Rgr2/PiTempG6: CR 12; Medium Humanoid (Dwarf); HD 2d8+12(Monk) , 2d10+12(Fighter) , 2d8+12(Ranger) , 6d10+36(Pious Templar (Good)) ; hp 162; Init +2; Spd 20; AC:13 (Flatfooted:11 Touch:13); Atk +13/8/3 base melee, +13/8/3 base ranged; +10/5/0 (1d10+2, Crossbow, heavy); +13/8/3 (1d6+2, Unarmed strike); SQ: +1 Attack vs. Orcs and Goblinoids, +2 Appraise (Stone and Metal Items), +2 Craft (Stone and Metal Items), +2 Saves vs. Poison, +2 Saves vs. Spells and Spell-like Effects, +4 Dodge Bonus to AC vs. Giants, Darkvision (Ex): 60 ft., Stability (Ex), Stonecunning (Ex), Weapon Familiarity (Ex); AL LG; SV Fort +20, Ref +10, Will +15; STR 14, DEX 14, CON 22, INT 10, WIS 13, CHA 6. Skills: Climb +6, Craft (Armorsmithing) +0, Craft (Blacksmithing) +0, Craft (Stonemasonry) +0, Craft (Weaponsmithing) +0, Escape Artist +7, Jump +11, Knowledge (Religion) +4, Listen +11, Profession (Miner) +3, Spot +11. Now the saves are much better -- but it's not really the classes, it's the feat; which I can just get with the bear warrior. |
| PhaedrusXY10-09-06, 11:57 AM | You can use normal equipment with the dwarven tank build, which is something your bear warrior can't do. And what feat are you talking about? Just the two monk levels gives you +3 to everything, and being a dwarf gets you +2 more vs. spells. The dwarf will also have alot more free feats to use for tactical feats. Comparing stat blocks for unequipped characters doesn't really tell you much. What exactly do you mean by "tank"? Your build will be very good at dishing out damage, and will have alot of hit points. But its AC will likely be terrible, and its saves probably will be good (except for Fortitude). It also probably won't have alot of spare feats, so about all it will be able to do is damage and use its body as a shield. |
| raidzuo10-09-06, 01:37 PM | You can use normal equipment with the dwarven tank build, which is something your bear warrior can't do. In normal form I have 23 AC with full plate and a steel shield. (I am now: Fighter 2/Ranger 2/Barbarian 2 btw). And what feat are you talking about? Just the two monk levels gives you +3 to everything, and being a dwarf gets you +2 more vs. spells. Steadfast Determination. I CAN'T BE A DWARF. The dwarf will also have alot more free feats to use for tactical feats. Comparing stat blocks for unequipped characters doesn't really tell you much. They have a tactical fighter, but it's not working. Tanks take damage -- and my build is terrible for dealing damage. I can't use weapons in bear form (unless the bear can use them), and I have no weapon focus. Like I said, the AC is fine, and my modified fortitude is 24. I had a few spare feats left over, so I got mad foam rager (negate an ability/spell/attack for one round) and armor specialization. What I have is a variable tank. If we fight spells casters, I bear form. If I fight ranged and melee, I Rage (w/o bear form). If I'm out of rages, I can "aid another" and give allies cover. |
