I'm starting my second epic campaign and I'm almost completely lost with everything that goes above level 20. So, I'm planning on making a melee character, an evil one to be more specific. Using spiked chain would be nice, but I don't know which class would be best with spiked chain. Of course, there's no need to use only one class, multiclassing is allowed.

Here are some further info:
-The books allowed are: Phb, Phb 2, Complete Divine/Warrior/Adventurer/Arcane, Expanded Psionics, Exalted deeds, Unearthed arcana and the books that are specific to the original 3.0 classes (for example, Song and silence).
-78 points + points from level, which means 83.
-Level adjustment is allowed.

Well, first off, you need to be aware of one sad truth: the power curve of non-spellcasters, already dropping sharply, plummets after 20th level.

you should consider being a warhulk frenzied berzerker. the amount of damage they can do with a greatsword is amazing. my friend once made one that wielded a collosal+ lance which power attacking for full on the charge pretty much killed anything, epic or not, in one hit

Callen: Yeah, I've heard of that, but we already have spellcasters and we don't want the party to be completely homogenous.

Thanks for the ideas, but I can't remember seeing Warhulk in any book... Where is it?

miniatures handbook. you have to be large, and you count as always having 0 ranks in mental-based skills, and you have a bab of 0 at each level, but in return you gain +2 str per level, the ability to throw rocks IIRC, and the ability to make all of your attacks hit each of the foes you threaten. In my opinion, and that of others i know, its really the only post-20 class that can pull its weight. and the reason is that epic strips away the bab and replaces it with an epic attack bonus, meaning that pretty much the only balancing factor to the PrC is stripped away. The builds i usually see it in are frenzied berzerker 10 that make sure they get the 4th attack before they even touch warhulk. that way, if you take a speed weapon, you pretty much canwhirlwind attack 5 times or more a round, depending on what you take in addition to berzerker/ warhulk

This Warhulk/Frenzied Berzerker sounds very interesting. Can you give me any ideas concerning stats and feats?

Edit: And of course, if I take Frenzied Berzerker 10/Warhulk 10, I still have three levels, one of which is going to level adjustment of half-ogre, to use. Should I take Barbarian?

Second edit: It seems I need quite a few feats to become a Frenzied Berzerker. How should I deal the levels of the classes?

I would suggest a psi-gish of some kind. As already said, if you don't have any "spellcasting", you're going to probably fall far behind. You can make a character that functions more or less like a melee character, but also has "magic", however. You might check out the Schism + Rage link in my sig for ideas. One of Carnivore's Shifter Wilder/Barbarian builds in there might suit you.

It's possible to have some magic thrown in, even a melee-oriented cleric would do. But yeah, main thing is that I am supposed to be an adept melee fighter, but spellcasting is also allowed...

And thanks, PhaedrusXY, I'll definitely have a look.

Throwing in some psion wouldn't be that shabby option either.

Like Caelic said, when you reach Epic spellcasters destroy all. If your saves suck then you die. If you dont have iummunities then you die.

Cleric 7/ Prestige Paladin (Unearthed Arcana) (with the Serenity feat, from Dragon Magazine Compendium) 3/ Boneknight (Five Nations, Eberron Splatbook 10 would be pretty sweet. You end with great saves, lots of immunities, lots of spells, divine boosted melee power and so on, and so on.

A nice Ardent (Complete Psionics)/ Slayer (Expanded Psionics Handbook)/ Sanctified Mind (Lords of Madness) would be great aswell.

If you have spellcasters in your group, and they are freindly, you can ofcourse completely ignore all protection and just be a stupid meatshield that has loads of HP and deal tons of damage. In that case I reccomend Warforged (Eberron Camapign Setting) Barbarian 3/ Fighter / Warforged Juggernaut (Eberron Campaign Setting) 5/ Frenzied Berzerker 10. Grab all possible Charge feats and Power Attack feats and prey that you hit your target, cause if you do, they should die. Also, the Deathless Frenzy is a beaut.

Another way to cope with pesky spellcaster is having a constant Antimagic Field, the Runescarred Berserker (Unaproachable East) gives you that. Mix with Frenzied Berserker somehow and get Deathless Frenzy and you would e golden, I am not sure if this is possible by 23rd level, but its an idea.

I know most of the resource is not on your list, but maybe the ideas can spark a concept in you mind.

For everything else, play a Magic Blooded Feytouched Silveraith Monk 1/ Despot 2/ Battle Dancer 1/ Hexblade 2/ Sorcerer 1/ Ephemeral Examplar 3/ Lurking Terror 3/ Arcane Duelist 2... :D

<<WARNING...WARNING...BAD HUMOR ALERT>>

To make the best 23rd level ASS KICKER possible there's only one way to go.

Fighter 1-23

1 - Improved Initiative (to get a jump on yer foes)
F - Improved Unarmed Strike (so that yer feet are weapons)
F - Weapon Focus: Unarmed Strike (better chance to hit)
3 - Power Attack (so that they know you mean it)
F - Weapon Specialization: Unarmed Strike (add insult to injury)
6 - Combat Expertise (you don't wanna be caught with yer pants down)
F - Improved Feint (so that yer foes will turn their backs on ya)
F - Greater Weapon Focus: Unarmed Strike (even better chance to hit)
9 - Persuasive (better chance to feint)
F - Combat Reflexes (catch them with their pants down)
12 - Two Weapon Fighting (Extra Ass-Kicking opportunity)
F - Greater Weapon Specialization (more insult to injury)
F - Improved Two Weapon Fighting (more extra Ass-Kicking opportunity)
15 - Two Weapon Pounce (two feet, two cheeks, you do the math)
F - Greater Two Weapon Fighting (lather, rinse, repeat)
18 - Roundabout Kick (sure, why not)
F - Weapon Supremacy (to be the one true Ass-Kicker)
F - Two Weapon Rend (they wont be able to sit down for a week)
21 - Overwhelming ASSult ('cause it had to be said)
F - Tumbling Feint (make sure ya get behind 'em)

That should make ya one pretty good ASS KICKER!!!

What the heck is that?

And I can get more books with some time, my friend has a pile of them, I just listed what I have. So don't be shy if you have great ideas outside those books.

How about a Duskblade? They most definately can tank well, and have access to spells in addition to that, even if the true power (Epic spellcasting) is out of their reach.

Though as has been said before, saves are very important in epic. And immunities. If you can gain access to the Eberron book Five nations for that PrC Bone knight already mentioned, a build I very much like is Paladin 2/Hexblade 3/Blackguard 3/Ur-priest 2/Bone knight 11/Divine oracle 2. BAB 16 (not including epic bonus), 9th level divine spells, Cha to saves 2 times, 3 times against spells, Mettle, "Evasion" that works even in heavy armor, and amazing immunities.

That character would kick some serious ass! There are not many spells that can hurt this guy, thanks to his amazing saves, mettle, evasion and immunities., and access to all good cleric buffs also to make him a serious threat in melee. Just get enough wisdom to cast as much as you want, as high charisma as you can afford, and good strength and constitution to survive in melee, which shouldn't be that hard in epic.

If you don't like Ur-priest (which is understandable), you can just drop it, the character still has all those good defencive capabilities. It would take a lot of versatility away though.

If you can gain access to the Eberron book Five nations for that PrC Bone knight already mentioned, a build I very much like is Paladin 2/Hexblade 3/Blackguard 3/Ur-priest 2/Bone knight 11/Divine oracle 2. Looks cool. I've never tried Ur-priest so I have nothing against them, at least not yet. I try to get Five nations from someone, that sounds worth a try.

Obviously, granting this character loads of Cha (as well as Wis, I gather) is vital, but what else should I go for? Constitution to in concentration checks?

Constitution and strength are always good for melee, dexterity can be low, you'll be wearing armor, intelligence is nice to have for skills, but doesn't have to be that high. I'm not sure, but you might also need the feat Education from Eberron campaign setting to meet the skill requirements of Ur-priest in time. Or you could get around it by simply just re-arranging the levels a little. I'm away from my books, so I'm working from my memory here.

It's sort of doable. You could do Barbarian 2/Fighter 4/Frenzied Berserker 8/Runescarred Berserker 9. That would get you antimagic field, Greater Rage, Greater Frenzy, Deathless Frenzy, and Improved Power Attack. Interestingly enough, this is a build you *don't* want to put too much Con into. A shorter frenzy is one that is less likely to kill your friends, and you already have practically infinite hp and crazy Fort saves.

But, to answer the original poster's question, the best class to use with a spiked chain is the Knight from PHB 2. Better yet, a Large Knight/Warmind. Here's one way to build it:
Bariaur (BoED)
Str 22 (14 +4 racial +4 level-up)
Dex 14
Con 16 (14 +2 racial)
Int 14
Wis 15 (14 +1 level-up)
Cha 6 (8 -2 racial)

1-2 LA +2.
3-5 Racial HD. Proficiency (Spiked Chain), Combat Reflexes.
6 Psychic Warrior 1. Power Attack.
7 Psychic Warrior 2. Combat Expertise.
8 Warmind 1. Improved Trip.
9 Warmind 2.
10 Warmind 3.
11 Warmind 4. Overchannel.
12 Warmind 5.
13 Warmind 6.
14 Warmind 7. Talented.
15 Warmind 8.
16 Warmind 9.
17 Warmind 10. Psionic Meditation.
18 Knight 1.
19 Knight 2. *Mounted Combat.
20 Knight 3. Weapon Focus (Spiked Chain).
21 Exotic Weapon Master 1 [Flurry of Strikes].
22 Exotic Weapon Master 2 [Exotic Reach].
23 Exotic Weapon Master 3 [Trip Attack]. Epic Feat.

For the most part, the order of your classes doesn't matter. The only real constraint is that you need to take Psychic Warrior before Warmind. The powers you take with Psychic Warrior should be utility-type powers that don't scale with manifester level.

This build is at its best fighting large numbers of enemies. With an augmented Expansion, you become Gargantuan sized and threaten out to 40 feet with a spiked chain. With three levels of Knight, those 40 feet are difficult terrain for your enemies, and you can take AoOs through cover and Sweeping Strike two squares with each attack. Your chain does 4d6 base damage.

I like the build suggestion, but you'll have to rework it a bit, as you don't meet the BAB prereq for Blackguard in the order you have it listed. Something like the Blackguard Demonbinder in my sig might work as well. The human paragon version of that is probably the best (it's in a spoiler at the end).

Aye, I was making the whole build from my memory. Here's a fleshed out build with feats and a few notable class abilities listed:

Human

1. Ex-Paladin 1 --- Education, Iron will
2. Ex-Paladin 2 --- [Divine grace]
3. Hexblade 1 --- Spell focus (Evil)
4. Hexblade 2 --- [Arcane resistance]
5. Hexblade 3 --- [Mettle]
6. Ur-Priest 1 --- Power attack
7. Ur-Priest 2 --- [Rebuke undead]
8. Bone knight 1 --- [Paladin conversion], [Bonecraft armor]
9. Bone knight 2 --- Cleave, [Summon skeletal steed]
10. Bone knight 3
11. Bone knight 4 --- [Improved bonecraft armor]
12. Bone knight 5 --- Improved sunder
13. Bone knight 6 --- [Bonecraft weapon]
14. Bone knight 7 --- [Improved bonecraft armor]
15. Bone knight 8 --- Practiced spellcaster (Ur-priest), [Exoskeleton of undead]
16. Bone knight 9
17. Bone knight 10 --- [Improved bonecraft armor]
18. Blackguard 1 --- Skill focus (Knowledge: Religion)
19. Blackguard 2 --- [Dark blessing]
20. Blackguard 3 --- [Aura of despair]
21. Divine oracle 1 --- Epic spellcasting, [Bonus domain (Oracle)]
22. Divine oracle 2 --- [Prescient sence]
23. Contemplative 1 --- [Bonus domain (Any)]

Very tight on feats, I admit. Human paragon is a good option, but that way you'd have to give up something, and it's hard to choose which ability to let go of.

ps. I would love to get to play this character myself!

Okay, thanks for the info. I really have to get a biography of Boneknight since I'm pretty sure that is the build I'm doing.
