So after many frustrated attempts at making our way through the D20 update of Rappan Athuk, one of the people in my group is going to be running the final level of the game as a one shot: we're going to jump straight ahead to the Den of the Master and Orcus himself (NOT the version from the recent Fiends book... this is the old school, kill-your-party-DEAD version).

We've got four PCs, each performing one of the iconic roles, and I have the Tank. The rules for character creation are as follows:

25th level "epic lite." This means that there is no epic class progression (core classes cap at 20th, prestige classes at 10th), no epic feats or magic items, etc. BAB and Saves post-20th level are handled using epic rules, as is starting wealth. Caster level can go beyond 20th, but it has to be using combinations of core and prestige classes.

Emphasis on the core game. This means core classes and races from the PHB only. Psionics are under debate at the moment, but let's assume that they're not allowed for the time being. No Incarnum or Tome of Magic stuff. Prestige classes, spells, magic items, and feats can come from any of the myriad Complete and Races books and the PHB II (and the Book of Exalted Deeds/Vile Darkness, which could make this all kinds of interesting...), but stuff from campaign world-specific books is frowned upon, and Dragon magazine material is straight out banned.

Things that need to be taken into account with PC design:

Emphasis should be on killing Undead and Demons. No doubt there will be other beasties, but we're expecting hordes of these.

Being good-aligned could be a severe handicap. I haven't been given specifics beyond "they have all kinds of ways to gank you if you're good." This means that paladin-type builds are still doable, but they need to be really effective to justify the risk.

Teleportation and summoning don't work. Ouch.

Neither does Turning. Double ouch. Turn Undead charges can still be used for various Divine feats, however.

Beyond that, the sky's the limit. Gish builds are fine, and may in fact be necessary for survival. I'm currently toying with the idea of an Enlightened Fist/Eldritch Knight combo (all kinds of fun with Mighty Wallop and using a Staff of Power as a monk weapon :D ), but I'm open to any and all suggestions.

Fist of Raziel (Book of Exalted Deeds) should do the trick. Cleric 7/Prestige Paladin 3/Fist of Raziel 10/X 2. If you don't have Unearthed Arcana for Prestige Paladin, you could go Cleric 3/Church Inquisitor 10/Fist of Raziel 10/Contemplative 2
