| SmiloDan11-07-03, 11:53 AM | Hi! I'm making a 1st level human ranger for a one shot this weekend for the local Con. 28 point buy. Here's what I'm thinking of now: Str 14 Dex 16 Con 12 Int 10 Wis 14 Cha 8 Feats: Point Blank Shot and Precise Shot Skills: Climb, Hide, Jump, Listen, Move Silently, Spot, Survival. Favored Enemy: Orcs. It's for the Green Regency part of the Realms. I don't know what the rest of the party is yet. I think we're going to guard caravans from orc raiders. |

Unless you're going to reach 4th level during the convention, you won't need that big an investment in Wisdom. Boost your Con or Int and you'll get some more tangable benefits that might actually come into play during the game. If you boost your Int, you should pick up the Search skill. IMX, it's one of the most used skills in the game. |
| SmiloDan11-07-03, 12:33 PM | Wisdom helps with Listen, Spot, and Survival, and Will Saves, which are otherwise sucky for Rangers. We might get up to 3rd level by the end of the 2nd adventure. |
| Kith Kanan11-07-03, 03:14 PM | Well YMMV. You asked for advice and that's my recommendation. I would really consider at least swapping your Con and Wis. 1st level characters are fragile; an extra hp could make the difference. If you went with a higher Int, you're going to have lots of skill points to shore up the Listen, Spot and Survival checks. If you can live with the lower hp, you want to play an archer, with high listen and spot skills, and resistance to will saves, why aren't you playing an elf? You get all of the above and more. Just something to consider. |

If would switch Strength and Constitution. You seem to be focusing more on Archery than Melee combat... Also a higher Consitution allows you to keep going longer (too bad you have to wait until level 3 for Endurance) Just make sure you have enough strength to be able to carry all your gear and not have a speed/climb penalty. Also consider using normal Leather Armor... so you can best climb, jump and all those good skills. Don't feel bad attacking from an area a distance from your allies... (read the Hide skill for rules on sniping) Or consider climbing a tree and attacking from there... no bonus to hit, but it does keep foes at bay a bit (at least long enough to put a few arrows in them. |

I would consider the elf, but I play an elf druid archer type in another campaign, and don't want to play the exact same character in this one. I'm even thinking of scraping the archer thing. Maybe a dwarf cleric or fighter or ranger or barbarian. Maybe a really odd paladin (Combat Reflexes and Spiked Chain). Who knows now? The 28 point buy system is pretty fast, so maybe I'll try a totally different character type. Maybe a Cleric wannabe Paladin? Those are always fun... |

Rangers are the ****, they are self-sufficent... who NEEDS a tank to block for you when you have high ground (er... tree) actually... try to find information that can allow you to travel along the branches of trees! Imagine how frustrating it would be to get shot by 2 arrows in a forest, charge in the direct they came from and find nothing. Then two more dig their way into your back from the direct you just left. You could have a guy running around all day (while you use Manyshot with the sniper part of Hide skill) The fact is that Rangers make great guerilla characters. And also they are easier to player because they get a lot more skill points than other classes (second only to Rogues and equal with Bards). The Ranger is underappreciated... Clerics and Fighters can't sneak very well... Rangers and Rogues... Skill MONKEYS! ROCK! My favorite character I ever made was Lia Nailo, Neutral Evil Elven Ranger... She was bad***... Only thing she suffered from was that I wasn't able to munchkin her... (if I could've she would've had a Greatsword rather than a Longsword, but I was able to get a Large Wooden Shield) |
| HighlandsTraveller11-07-03, 09:56 PM | By green regency do you mean Living Green Regent campaign? Cause thats 25 pt buy. The one suggestion I am certain of: never make a character without at least 14 in con (at least before race adjustment.) If it is 28 pt buy I'd take the dex down to 14 cause the 4 pts it costs to get 16 is too much even for your prime stat. Use 2 on con and int and then you can get the search skill. |
| SmiloDan11-09-03, 08:44 AM | Yeah, it was the Living Green Regency. We finished both adventures, and then did a What If scenario where we tried to wipe out the BBEGs at the end (instead of just sneaking around and looking). My ranger was the only one to survive. My ranger mostly used his longbow, but in the final battle, he was able to use his glaive. Got a crit too! :D The GM told us 28 points. I thought that was standard. We played 2 sessions. I got hit once in the first session and not at all in the second. Being a ranged combatant rocks! :D |
