I was thinking of making a Hexblade for our campaign. Get to start at level 3 and 1000gp. Standard races from PHB. But with the 28 point buy I'm not sure how effective it would be, especially since I want to more or less fill in the gaps of our party. We have one favored soul, one cleric, one sorc, one TWF ranger (but low con), one bard, and one monk. I don't want to play a rogue since that was what my last character was.

So if you fine ladies and gentlemen could help with this guy or the decision to just play a straight fighter type character.

Well 28pt buy is quite tough but here is what I would suggest

STr 14 (6)
Dex 14 (6)
Con 12 (4)
Int 12 (4)
Wis 8 (0)
Cha 15 (8) raise to 16 at level 4

I would stick with light armor to keep your speed, choose buffing spells for gear I would say go for a masterwork chainshirt,
great sword or perhaps go for ranged type character and buy a Mighy comp longbow depending on how long you play I would go for an improved framiler, if you DM allows it a Worg or something capable of fighting. good luck :)

What about feats? I was thinking of getting that one feat from FR handbook, think its spell prodigy, that adds a +1 DC to your spells. Any others people can suggest?

Hexblade...

Focus on Strength, Constitution, and Charisma.

Str 16 (10 pt)
Dex 10 (2 pt)
Con 14 (6 pt)
Int 10 (2 pt)
Wis 10 (2 pt)
Cha 14 (6 pt)

Just do it like a lighter armor paladin...

Hexblade is a warrior first. And is somewhere between the Barbarian and Paladin (its curses are like inverse rages)

I Choose my spell list and most of them are enchantment spells and most of them have some sort of range, at least the attacking ones. So should I put any skill points in concentration? For the most part I probably wouldn't be using more than 25% of them in combat and I can always take a 5 foot step most of the time to not get an AoO on my character for casting. So I could use that point in a skills like diplomecy or something. Good idea or no?

I don't know how in love you are with the idea of playing a Hexblade, but judging by your party's makeup, you've got plenty of casters and secondary casters. You might consider playing a straight-up fighter. The party will suffer from low hp issues, since no player has over a d8 hit die.

If you like this idea, I would suggest a barbarian. Unlike a straight fighter, they remain potent at high levels, with DR, improved rage abilities, and Uncanny Dodge. The other beautiful thing about barbarians is that they can be insanely strong characters with or without PrCs. The only problem I have with them is that I really love feats.

For straight barbarian:
Str 15
Dex 14
Con 14
Int 10
Wis 12
Cha 10

Almost any race will work, but the best would be Human for the extra feat and skills. Half-orc allows you to boost your strength, but otherwise blows. Dwarves also work well, if you don't mind the sheer weirdness of having a dwarven barbarian.

Feat selection: Focus on feats to boost your rage number of uses, duration, potency, etc. plus Power Attack, Cleave, and whatever else you like.

This is a painfully simple build for this board, but it's actually still quite effective.

Spellcasting Prodigy is set to be reduced in power when the Player's Guide to Faerun comes out, I think. It will only affect bonus spells, not DC levels.

If DCs are your concern, you'd be better off with either Spell Focus (enchantment) or Ability Focus (Hexblade Curse).

Regarding skills: Your party has a bard, already. Can't he be the diplomat?

whoa whoa whoa.
you need dexterity. hexblades get no spell failure in light armor and it's hard to get a good ac in light armor.

I recommend dexterity, charisma, constitution and weapon finesse in that order...

or strength, charisma, dexterity, constitution. in that order.

max out bluff and intimidate. they are very useful.
bluff, intimidate, curses, and a non-weak melee attack make a hexblade terrifying in melee. I tore through 8 guards at level 1 (after taking out a level 7 wizard when he tried to torture me but that was sheer luck. and MAN was it cool)

I wasn't using 28 point buy though.

you get to start at level 3 though so I recommend you go for charisma and dexterity... con's not as important since you're almost past the low levels... ad strength can basically be replaced by your base attack bonus (and a bigger sword).

hope that helps.

Actully the Hexblade has a D10 hit die and I rolled pretty high on it (10,8,10 Plus con) Obviously the first 10 is given to me. But anyways.

I was thinking of doing the following things given all the information everyone has provided for me.

Stats:
Str: 14
Dex: 14
Con: 12
Int: 10
Wis: 10
Cha: 15

For spells I was going to go mainly enchantment and take skill focus and penentration for enchantment and the greater versions of it. I was going to avoid combat casting since at higher levels +4 isn't much and I can always take a 5' movement to get out of attack range of creatures to cast about 75% of the time.

Skill wise I am unsure what I want, probably max spellcraft and I'm unsure from there, I might try to max intimidate since I could stack the curses with the -2 penilties on a successful intimidate.

I don't think i'll go bluff because I won't have the int to get improved feint and don't have sneak attack. Diplomecy I won't take because again of the bard. Knowledge arcana we have the sorcerer maxing out that. And i'll probably max concentration.

Feat wise I was thinking of Dodge for the small AC bonus and power attack and cleave.

For equipment thinking of greatsword and chainshirt (both masterwork)

And thats what I have for the most part.

EDIT: Fixed stat mistake

I was referring to the rest of the party minus your character, but your point stands, the Hexblade does indeed get a d10 hit die. To phrase it more accurately, I'm concerned about your party having someone who can consistently stand toe-to-toe with opponents and hold the line for the soft, weak flesh of the spellcasters. :D

That's not just a matter of hit points, but also of ability to consistently deal good damage. But you seem to be doing quite well with your Hexblade idea, so it's all good. I was just throwing it out there as an alternative idea.

Your current build looks pretty good. You might consider taking Improved Buckler Defense instead of Dodge. It depends slightly on your DM's interpretation of that feat's wording, but most would let you use it in conjunction with a two-handed weapon, since it is in your "off-hand." At higher levels you can get an enchanted buckler, allowing this feat to scale with level.

I don't have the Hexblade's skill list next to me, but based on your party's makeup and needs, maxing Concentration, Spellcraft, and Intimidate sounds like your best option.

Looks good otherwise. Focusing on enchantment spells and Intimidate creates a nice character concept as well. Scare your opponents to death and then bring them to death. ;)

The only problem with the buckler defense (as I would indeed take it) is that the Hexblade is not proficient with any shields so I would have to burn that extra feat to get proficent with shields or multi-class into a class that can use shields like a fighter. I'm not really planning on multi-classing and just going to take Hexblade all the way though probably or maybe if my DM will allow it, PrC into a Dragon Disciple.

And now with the HD my character and my good rolls I will probably end up being the parties "meat" shield so to say at the moment.

Hexblade Skill list is: Bluff, Intimidate, Diplomacy,Concentration, Knowledge (Arcana), Spellcraft, and Ride I belive. Out party doesn't have much access to mounts so I disregarded mounts totally.

Anyways, I just want to thank everyone: LunarCaustic, JosephKell, Raging Halfling, rilem, Kingrames AND ALL MY FANS AT HOME! I LOVE YOU ALL
