| Baator the dark11-25-03, 09:46 PM | I believe it was on this board that I read about getting a 97% miss chance to attack rolls. I think the spells used were displacement, blur and mirror image but this could be according to old 3.0 rules. If anyone knows how to do it please post away. |

Therefore, if you have Blink an Displacement up, your opponents have a 50% chance of getting through your Blink and a 50% chance of that chance of getting through your Displacement. I'm not statistics geniouus, so I'm not entirely sure how you're supposed to calculate a raw percentage from that. |

Tellish I know for a fact that the official ruling for 3.0 was that displacement and blink stack with each other and with mirror image. All together that gave you about 97% protection while all the mirror images were still there. One image goes away (reducing the protection) each time they protect you though. Blink and displacement together provided 75% protection (50% rolled twice adds up to 75%) Havent looked into it for 3.5 though. |
| Baator the dark11-26-03, 10:52 PM | I thought that was how multiple concealment sources worked (rolling separately) but wanted to get a second opinion before I plunged into a build. I was thinking of going for blink, displacement and ghostform for a total of appx. 97% miss chance at 9th level. On a side note does anyone know if multiple castings of miss chance spells can be rolled individually? I cant find a rule that says it doesnt. |
| Boondoggle11-27-03, 06:17 AM | Ghost form & blink don't stack. They both shunt a character to the ethereal plane. Blur & blink (or ghost form) do stack, however. Also, it doesn't matter how you roll your miss chances. You can roll them individually, or you can multiply them (actually, you multiply the chance you'll get hit, then subtract that from 100 to get your final miss chance) and roll once. It's the same either way. |
| Bond, James Bond11-27-03, 06:23 AM | As far as I know, concealment does not stack, nor do you roll miss chance for each source seperatly. Reason behind this is that if you have FULL concealment (50% miss chance) you have obviously no chance whatsoever of getting any higher concealment. So blur and displacement wont stack I am almost sure there is something about this in the PHB.... Blink might be special, since that 50% miss chance doesnt come from concealment, but rather from being not on this plane for a moment. As for Mirror Image, that is a seperate story, since it gives you no concealment... |
| Israfel66611-27-03, 12:46 PM | The best I can come up with is: Ghostform - 50% chance due to incorporeality. Displacement - 50% due to looking away from where you really are (it's not concealment, in fact it says "50% miss chance *as if it had total concealment.*") Empowered Mirror Image cast at CL 21+ (average 10 images) - 90% due to several targets. Greater Invisibility - 50% from concealment. To calculate the total chance to hit, you have to traspose everything into 0-1 scale (eg 25% becomes 0.25) and multiply all the single to-hit chances. In this case, we get: 0.5*0.5*0.1*0.5 = 0,0125 = 1,25% chance of hitting. A nice result, for something that can be bypassed by a 3rd-level mage with see invisibility + magic missile ;) |
| SuperThread11-27-03, 01:01 PM | Greater Invisibility won't stack with Displacement or Mirror Image, because once it is cast the opponent won't be able to see the displaced image or the mirror images. Still, even without GI factored in, there is about a 3% hit chance. Pretty good, if you ask me. |
| Andion Isurand11-27-03, 03:17 PM | This is where using a Seeking, Ghost Touch bow comes in while having True Seeing in effect. 50% miss chance for Total Concealment. This should be the highest miss chance that conealment can grant, since you can't do better than total concealment. 50% miss chance vs, magic weapons and non-force spells due to Incorporeality is something else altogether. I agree that these two things, along with Mirror image and related spells that create illusory duplicates can be added together to help reduce the chances of being struck. |
| Baator the dark11-27-03, 07:53 PM | First of all see invisibillity won't penetrate displacement its true seeing and second of all shield nuff said, and see invisibility on Blink will negate 20% which ghost form will then take over. I was going for ghostform more for the 50% chance of ignoring damage than anything else. As for rules I can find nothing in the PHB that says anything about miss chances not overlapping. The PHB Glossary defines stacking as:"Combine for a cumulative effect." I am not saying that 50% miss chance plus another 50% miss chance =100% miss chance but rather that they overlap eachother which means they do not combine. Miss chance is defined as "The possibility that a successful attack roll misses anyway because of the attacker's uncertainty about the target's location. See concealment" The miss chance roll definition merely states that it is "A d% roll to determine the success of an attack roll to which a miss chance applies" That doesn't seem to help either. It seems odd that WotC could have missed something like this but I can't seem to find anything to contradict this. |
