| Neonsamurai08-07-06, 10:55 AM | I am going to start playing in a new campaign and I am going to play an illusionist / enchantig type of wizard. We start at level 12 and we can take one template of up to LA +3 for free (no XP loss etc.) I have flipped through my books but couldnt find anything too promising. The only templates I found were half-dragon and half-elemental (it counts as +3 in the given campaign). Do you have any ideas to share ? |
| Nausicaa08-07-06, 10:56 AM | Maybe the Phrenic Template in EPH |
| marrithl208-07-06, 11:13 AM | Gloura from Underdark! Specially if you do something with CHA as your main stat... ie bard or sorcerer. Paladin works as well. I'm using the template right now with my sorcerer and have a cha (at level 20) of 48. Not too shabby for an unoptimized character. You just can't beat being able to fly AND Unearthly grace!!! Problem with sunlight? pshht, use the "shaders" that cost a whopping 1 sp... might as well buy 10 just in case you lose some. (forget which book these are from) |
| hogarth08-07-06, 11:59 AM | Maybe the Phrenic Template in EPH The half-fey template is also good (if you can get it for free). |

| rilem08-07-06, 12:10 PM | What sort of PC is this for? Saint (BoED) is generally considered very undercosted at +2LA. Maybe an Aasimar or Draconic Saint for a total of +3. Svirfneblin (LA +3) are also quite good, for certain builds. |
| Xeraph08-07-06, 12:39 PM | While we are being silly with Templates, might aswell mention the Magic Blooded from Dragon Magazine. Haven't got the mag/page number right now, but -2 wis, +2 cha and some minor SLAs for a measly +0 LA is worth the bargain. |
| GoodBradFluffkins08-07-06, 12:41 PM | Hmm, Spell-warped from monster manual 3? |
| hogarth08-07-06, 12:43 PM | While we are being silly with Templates, might aswell mention the Magic Blooded from Dragon Magazine. Haven't got the mag/page number right now, but -2 wis, +2 cha and some minor SLAs for a measly +0 LA is worth the bargain. The poster specifically said "one template of up to LA +3", not a combination of templates. I think phrenic, half-fey or svirfneblin (or maybe drow) sound the best. |
| Necromas08-07-06, 01:17 PM | Remember guys this is a wizard build, dont think things like assimar or draconic would help. |
| PhoenixInferno08-07-06, 01:21 PM | There's also the White Dragonspawn (+1 LA). |
| rilem08-07-06, 01:30 PM | Remember guys this is a wizard build..., sorry, I read right over that. Aasimar/Saint or Draconic/Saint would still be great for a Sorceror-type — and saint is really almost always useful — +2 to DC of spells, AC bonuses, immunities, etc. But since it's illusionist, I'lll underline the Svirfneblin suggestion. Killer Svirf? |
| marrithl208-07-06, 02:14 PM | Yes but you can take just the racial properties of the gloura for a level 3 adjustment. If you wanted to waste time taking a level 9 adjustment and be a level 7 bard, go ahead... but I was simply suggesting the race. |
| Reiner08-07-06, 02:57 PM | Actually you really can't take just the racial properties for level adjustment. LA and Racial Hitdice come packaged together as a complete ECL that a player must use if he wants to play as a monster race. The only exception is in the case of the OP, where he can ignore up to +3 LA. That does not mean he(or you) can ignore racial hitdice. What you are advocating is that in any instance, you can get X amount of free ECL from a monster race, where X is the race's racial hit dice? It does not work that way at all. |

I feel incredibly sorry for your party and DM....please tel me you didnt get the spellcasting aswell without your HD? If i could get away with this, next time play a black ethergaunt..... speaking of which, if you get 3 LA free, ask your DM to right a savage progression of the black ethergaunt as 16HD/1LA (as opposed to the normal 4 LA) and then top it off with an illusionist prc |
| Neonsamurai08-07-06, 04:46 PM | Thanks for the responses! So far Phrenic seems to suit my character best. This template is just awesome for +2 LA! And it has a subtle appearance which I prefer. I don't like my characters to be wandering freak shows ;) That Gloura thing is odd and illegal. Either you take it with racial HD or you just can't be a Gloura and racial HD for a spellcaster = not good. Keep it coming guys 'n' girls :D |
| Urnsk08-07-06, 05:00 PM | There's also the White Dragonspawn (+1 LA). Why use the White when you can use the Blue (+3) |
| Caelic08-07-06, 05:06 PM | You might also want to take a look at Voidmind, from the Monster Manual III. It's a bit odder, and would require some background story, but has some nice abilities. |

And it has a subtle appearance which I prefer. I don't like my characters to be wandering freak shows ;) I thought the Spellwarped would be the best thing in here until I looked up Phrenic. Wow, that's a pretty sweet template, especially as you gain some of those psi-like abilities. Shame they are charisma based though. I was also thinking Grig would be pretty nice, gotta love its flying, tiny size, and crazy dex for an enchanter illusionist... Very hard to see one of these guys if he doesnt want to be, plus you never know when making everyone dance can come in handy. Add 13+hd SR, some decent spell-likes and great stat increases and its downright scary. But its a much better race for a sorceror or bard. Too bad Pixie is +4 instead of +3 =), being invisible and really hard to find all the time would be awesome for an enchanter illusionist. |
| sparkster424208-07-06, 07:21 PM | Shadow Creature, originally from Manual of the Planes - a boost to movement, concealment, and some really nifty spell-like abilities than can cover some of those holes that being a specialist wizard might leave. good stuff. |
| Surreal08-07-06, 08:38 PM | I was also thinking Grig would be pretty nice, gotta love its flying, tiny size, and crazy dex for an enchanter illusionist... Very hard to see one of these guys if he doesnt want to be, plus you never know when making everyone dance can come in handy. Plus the dance is based on the fiddle song, making it sonic based, which I believe qualifies you for the Siren prestige class (Savage Species). |
| Auldar08-07-06, 08:43 PM | How about Half-Celestial? BoED has it as LA +2 with a normal race. |
| MikeN08-07-06, 09:55 PM | Varoot Nerra, from Fiend Folio. Reflective spell resistance, and bonuses to stats. Probably would want a sorcerer and maybe one of the shadow builds on this board to use it well. +3 LA. I also like Mechanitrixes from that same book if you're going for a theme wizard. Lightning heals them and they're immune to it so you can heal yourself and damage others at the same time. I had a fun build once using 3.0 earth elemental savant with a Mechanitrix once...your double damage from lightning becomes doubled healing from it and you were immune to two elements...not too crazy but just fun. It's only a +1 LA so maybe you could stack a template on it if you like. Dragonspawn from Dragonlance Sourcebook are broken-good imo. One extra casting level of sorc (that stacks with sorc) and lots of physical bonuses... |
| lostone08-08-06, 09:03 AM | You might also want to take a look at Voidmind, from the Monster Manual III. It's a bit odder, and would require some background story, but has some nice abilities.I was going to suggest this one but could not remember if it gave penalties to mental attributes. If it does not penalize the mental attributes, the immunities it gives are fantastic. Just make sure the background story includes the 3 mind flayers that enslaved you all died horribly in front of you. :D |
