| Stalwartmonkey08-07-06, 11:45 PM | my group has suggested i play the tank. we were talking, and decided that i play a huge guy who just likes to rab ahold and beat down. his favorite game is "Let's Wrassle" the idea i came up with was Feral Half-Minotuar Goliath, with a raised by wolves background from dragon magazine. stats are gonna go like this str 18(+4)goliath (+4)Feral (+4)Half-Minotuar (+2)Raised By Wolves Background (from dragon magazine) dex 12(-2)G(-2)F con 16(+2)G(+2)Feral (+2)H-M(+2)RBW int 12(-4)F(-2)H-M(-2) RBW wis 8(+2)Feral (-2)RBW cha 8(-2)RBW He will be starting at level 5, so he's a level 1 monk, level one barb. he will have between 25 and 36 hp. versus 5 levels of d10 +4. thoughts? |
| nekidchickens08-07-06, 11:58 PM | Where do you find Goliath and Half minotaur? |
| runestar08-08-06, 12:20 AM | Usually, races with LA offering a con bonus will be weaker at lower lvs, but since your bonus hp from con is directly based off your HD, this disparity will lessen as you gain more lvs. Thus, expect to be more fragile at lower lvs, but tough it out and you will be stronger at higher lvs, when the extra hp from the con bonus more than makes up for any lost hp due to LA. :) |
| allenchan08-08-06, 12:25 AM | First, with all the bonuses to strength, you really dont need it to be your highest stat. I would definately put the 18 into con, to further help with the HP problem. Secondly, you cannot be a Monk, as it requires Lawful. Thirdly, Monk is not good for a classic tank anyways, especially one with an abysmal wisdom. You'd be better of taking fighter levels and get the grapple-related feats that way. |
| GoodBradFluffkins08-08-06, 12:30 AM | Yea, you have enough hp to tank, especially in a level or two. I would probably go fighter instead of monk, but thats just my opinion. However, your real problem is a 4 int, a 6 cha, and an 8 dex. That's barely a playable character and certainly unless your dm is Very lenient you won't be able to tank effectively with a 4 int. Especially when raging. By tanking I mean intelligently interposing yourself between the bad guys and your party, and gauging the real threats etc. But I suppose not all DMs enforce that sort of thing. |
| PhoenixInferno08-08-06, 01:01 AM | A simplistic rule of thumb would be that you must get back at least as much CON bonus as you lose in HD for tank-ish characters, unless you get a HUGE bonus to your survivability somewhere else. |
| preacher of nothing08-08-06, 07:08 PM | doesn't the half minotaur also make you large which would mean +8 str +4 con and -2 dexterity? ps: I really don't think the feral is worth it. It doesn't have huge enough bonuses for a +1 LA and also some nasty penalties to intelligence and dexterity I was actually helping a friend make a level 3 barbarian and he wanted human so I suggested half minotaur (no goliaths in the campaign) I made a sort of comparison between barbarian 2 half minotaur and barbarian 1 half minotaur with the feral template as well. Initial: Str:16 Dex:12 Con:12 Int:16 Wis:10 Cha:8 Half Minotaur: Str:28 Dex:12 Con:18 Int:14 Wis:12 Cha:8 Feral Half Minotaur: Str:32 Dex:10 Con:20 Int:10 Wis:14 Cha:8 Barbarian lvl1. Str:32 Dex:10 COn:20 Int:10 Wis:14 Cha:8 BAB:+1 Full Attack Bonus:+12 -1 = +11 HP:17 Skill points: 16 AC: 10 + 6 (natural armor) - 1 = 15 Speed: 60 1 feat (power attack) Save: Fort: 2 + 5=7 Ref: 0 Will: 0 + 2=2 Advantages: Huge strength, Great constitution bonus, nice saves, huge speed, ok AC (The rules say feral gives you +6 or the one you already have. But you already have +4 from half minotaur and +2 from the size increase). Disadvantages: Very very very low hit points, and +2 LA. Now without the feral I did it like this: Initial: Str:18 Dex:10 Con:14 Int:12 Wis:12 Cha:8 Half Minotaur: Str:30 Dex:10 Con:20 Int:10 Wis:14 Cha:8 Barbarian lvl2. Str:30 Dex:10 Con:20 Int:10 Wis:14 Cha:8 BAB:+2 Full Attack Bonus:+12 -1 = +11 HP: 22 + 1d12 Skill points: 16 AC: 10 + 6 - 1 = 15 Speed: 50 1 feat (power attack) Save: Fort: 3 + 5=8 Ref: 0 Will: 0 + 2=2 Advanatges: Same as before except your fortitude save is better, your hit points are HUGE in comparison. Disadvantages: Hit points could still be a bit better, but the LA is +1. |
| Necromas08-08-06, 07:26 PM | doesn't the half minotaur also make you large which would mean +8 str +4 con and -2 dexterity? The stat bonuses/penalties only apply to a creature that advanced in a size category. Half-minotaurs are already large, their only stat bonuses are the ones listed as their racial stat modifiers. |
| preacher of nothing08-08-06, 07:31 PM | The stat bonuses/penalties only apply to a creature that advanced in a size category. Half-minotaurs are already large, their only stat bonuses are the ones listed as their racial stat modifiers. I was under the impression that if a medium creature takes the template it advances them a size category edit: "If the Base Creature was of Small or Medium size, its size is increased by one category, with all the appropriate changes to its ability scores, etc., plus a +10’ improvement to base movement. These changes are in addition to the bonuses and penalties listed." |
| Stalwartmonkey08-08-06, 10:03 PM | wait, simply going up in size increases strength and con?? i gotta go check that. |
| Stalwartmonkey08-08-06, 10:33 PM | call me a noob, but i just checked the srd on that and am mildly blown away. so, instead of my original math, str 18(+4)goliath (+4)Feral (+4)Half-Minotuar (+2)Raised By Wolves Background (from dragon magazine) i add an additional 8 on top of that? so i've got... 40 str.... 26 con... 10 dex... holy crap. ok. it's worth it now. esspecially considering that i'll be considered huge for grappling and armor spikes. |
| rilem08-08-06, 11:19 PM | And, as noted in the other identical thread you posted within 20 minutes of this one, a color spray will destroy you. Khazra's Llothtouched Mongrelfolk Barbarian or Mineral Warrior would probably be a better bet. |
