OK
The GM in my group is running Dragonlance next and is only allowing the basic races (no minotaurs or half-ogres) and has stated that we will use the 25 point system build. I'm used to a little higher stats and am trying to get a good idea for a 1st lvl character with a build for a long campaign. I only have acess to the PHB and the PrC in the DMG and Dragonlance corebook so I am looking for something basic but fun and effective. I am currently either thinking a Dwarven Fighter or a Human Barbarian since the group already has a Wizard, Rogue and NPC cleric. Any suggestions to not make these so vanilla and predictable? In DL the Kender are cleptomaniacs and the Gnomes are all tinkerers who run sentences together and are also something I'm not very interested in playing so I am left with Dwarf/Human/and a few Elf choices.

I'm not too familiar with Dragonlance, but a heavy-hitting tank type would mesh well with your party. I would suggest you take a look at the following threads. While they may have resources that you aren't able to use, a good portion of them are mostly PHB/DMG and/or can be easily adapted.

Sword and Shield (The 3.5 Fighter Thread) (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=201375)

The 3.5 Barbarian Thread (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=111360)

Also, are you playing with the original 3.0 books or the revised 3.5 edition?

We're using the 3.5 rules.

I'm not entirely familiar with Dragonlance post-War of the Lance. Are Clerics actually viable now? What about Druids? Druid would be my first recommendation in a limited-stat campaign, IF it's available.

Clerics are mystics in the Age of Mortals. They duplicate most of the powers of clerics, without any of the lipservice to a god. Druids were always viable, simply because they didn't necessarily need to worship a god.

I'd personally suggest an elf, Barbarian's not a bad idea (go wild elf for this, though). I might go Elf Fighter with an eye towards becoming a dragonrider myself. Nobody else in the group is going to be running close to that tack.

The final option is working towards one of the uber Knight PrCs (either Solamnic or Takhisis, depending on your personal modus operandi). They come into their power on the late scale for most people, but they're pretty much the final answer in combat.

the several Knight builds in Dragonlance can be brutally effective, but you'll be facing a LOT of roleplaying to get there, and of course you shouldn't have a problem with playing by a pretty strict code of conduct.

sample build:
Cleric 4 (War domain) / Knight of the Crown 3 / Knight of the Sword 3 / Knight of the Rose 10

HD 7d8+13d10
BAB +18
Base Saves: +17/+6/+15
Cleric casting lvl 17
silly amount of class features

Alternatively, since you're in the Dragonlance setting, you could (ab)use the (white) Dragonspawn template... while brilliant (cheesy, even) for a sorcerer, this is also extremely well-suited to a party tank, granting flight, natural weapons, hefty natural armor and +2 con and dex for a mere +1 LA, as well as granting a sorcerer caster lvl some some nice utility (say, a True Strike for a big Power Attack). You'll have to think up a nice backstory for this, though, since at lvl 1, chances are you won't have fought yourself free from your dragon overlord... maybe some knights killed the dragon and adopted you?

Actually, with the return of the gods post War of Souls, standard clerics are now playable in the campaign when set in contemporary Krynn.

For your party, I would definitely go with a Solamnic Knight.

Sounds cool a self-healing tank would be pretty sweet. I'll have to give it a shot. Thanks!
