| calypso11-09-04, 09:06 PM | Hey guys, I had posted a few days ago about help with a 3.5 build, but it turns out that (:() my DM is using 3.0 psionics. It's point-buy, 42 starting from 6, level 10. I'm probably going to be a blind (using hear light to "see") mind-flayer hunter. I don't want to take Slayer though because it slows down my manifestation progression pretty severly. So far what I have is: Human Str: 19 (4th level +1) Dex: 12 Con: 18 Int: 10 Wis: 13 (8th level +1) Cha: 8 10 levels of Psychic Warrior. Weapon Focus/Spec(greatsword), Psionic Charge, Psionic Weapon, Power Attack, Speed of Thought, Up the Walls, Mental Leap, Deep Impact, Iron Will. Powers: 1: Call Weaponry, Combat Precog, Hear Light 2: Animal Affinity, Body Equ, Expansion 3: Displacement, Improved Biofeedback 4: Intertial Barrier. However... it seems like a pretty weak build. Poor BAB for level 10, terrible will save, only so-so HP for 18 con, and so forth. So.... help? This is for a Planescape campaign, if that helps anything. Calypso |
| Ravashack11-09-04, 10:58 PM | /chokes He's using 3.0 Psionics? Oh geez. Just make a Dwarf idiot savant. Throw as many points as you're allowed to into Constitution, and put the rest of your points into stats that power the powers you want. At level 10, you might want either Dex, Wis, or Str. Or all three. But stick with buffs, because your level up points will all be spent on Constitution, your DC setting stat. |
| Tealgorthian11-09-04, 11:08 PM | Wasnt there an inifinate stat loop involving Animal Affinity? Might wanna do a search for that.. not sure if anything survived. Someone will come along and tell you all about it I am sure. 3.0 Psionics are teh -broken-. |
| Ravashack11-09-04, 11:18 PM | There were two loops that I can remember. One was with Mind Switch and Body Fuel. Manifest a switch, burn all physical ability points for PP--thus killing the guy--and switch back automatically with more PP than what you left. Even after errata, it still cheesed. The second loop was Psychofeedback + Mindfeeder weapon + a weapon with a large range for critical hits. Burn all your PP for Str, full attack, hit for a metric ton and gain back more than enough PP than what you lost, assuming one of the hits was a crit. There might have been more details about it, but that's what I remember. Of course with both of those loops, they're cheesy enough to get instabanned by any sane DM... |
| Tealgorthian11-09-04, 11:21 PM | Which is why you wait for the 1st BBEG, slam them with it and give the DM a big **** eating grin. (Then start rolling up a new character) |
| rilem11-09-04, 11:35 PM | I know little about 3.0 Psionics (except, yuck ...) so I'll ramble on about other stuff. A blind human ... I don't like how you'll likely be spending 12 percent of your available power points just to be remotely effective throughout the day. You should either pick up a Blindfold of Pefect Darkness (A&E guide) or try some other trick — I'm presently playing a Grimlock Psychic Warrior with the synesthete power, but b/c Grimlock's gain blindsight naturally the power is just for emergencies, not basic combat. You don’t need Slayer, but a Favored enemy will help immensely. You can then take the feat Wise to Your Ways (ghostwalk) which grants you a save bonus equal to your favored enemy bonus vs. their special attacks, spell-like abilites and so on. Also, note that by going Psion instead of PsyWar gets you a sighted psicrystal, which can act as your seeing-eye rock. (I didn’t think of this until after I made my grimlock; It would have been a better move, I think.) Psion will also help your will save. Let’s try this: Grimlock2/Egoist3/Ranger2/Slayer1 + 2 LA BAB +6 Base Saves 4/7/6 (modified saves: 8/11/8) Take Resolved Psicrystal for +2 will +3 saves vs. Mind Flayers (this assumes ranger & slayer bonuses stack) HP: 2d8+3d4+2d8+1d10 + 32 AC: 4 Natural + 4 dex + 2 dodge + 4 chain shirt + ?? magic not sure on your point buy system but try this: Str 20 16 (10 pts) +4 racial Dex 18 14 (6 pts) + 2 racial + 2 level Con 18 16 (10 pts) +2 racial Int 12 12 (4 pts) Wis 12 14 (6 pts) –2 racial Cha 10 14 (6 pts) – 4 racial Feats: 1. Axedodge (+2 to AC with battleaxe) 3. Wise to your Ways 6. Weapon Focus or Improved Shield Bash Blindsight 40, Scent, track by scent Power Points: 13 (is that right?) 3 0-level, 3 1st-level powers From here you continue with slayer and also pick up some barbarian levels (perhaps as many as five if you can go Bear Totem variant from Unearthed Arcana -- the bonus to grappling will put you at an advantage with Mind Flayers who try to nab you. Finish out as Grimlock2/Egoist3/Ranger2/Slayer6/Barbarian (bear totem) 5 BAB +16 Base Saves 13(greatfortitude)/11/13 (psicrystal) +3 saves vs. Mind Flayers (this assumes ranger & slayer bonuses stack) +4 vs. compulsions/mind-affecting effects from lucid buffer. Bonus barbarian feats: Great fortitude, Improved Grapple, toughness, (Addl. +4 to grapple checks while raging). Note: this would be a lot niftier in 3.5, when Slayer continues power progression. But defensively it's nifty and with your Grapple check, manifest some claw powers before raging and you almost want the Illithids to come after you. |
| Piraatje11-10-04, 03:40 AM | Heh, 3.0 PsyWar is awesome. Get Polymorph Self as you're 4th level power. Dont put as much points into str, Con should be your primary stat (hitpoints!). Just polymorph in something big (troll is popular at your level), then cast expansion to become huge. Trash people with a spiked chain (20 ft reach now). Your size & str will make you THE tripper. Str 16 Dex 14 Con 18 Int 14 Wis 14 Cha 8 Get EWP Spiked Chain, expertise, combat reflexes, improved trip & Knockdown (the might Trip Chain). Polymorph into something large and powerfull (which lasts hour/level). Rule combat by tripping everybody in range (which are a lot of foes). Troll has ?22? strength, add ?4? by using animal affinity,?4? by expansion, and you have a nice +10 to strength, +7 from bab, maybe +2 from combat precognition, magic weapons maybe, in any case not a bad attack bonus. You're AC will be pretty ok due to the natural armour gains from polymorph. Not that you'll be hit much with your foes sprawling all over the floor ;) |
| calypso11-10-04, 03:46 AM | I don't know.... using a spiked chain makes me feel.... dirty. :P Polymorph eh? Good idea. Plus, I can still manifest powers while polymorphed, right? Even if I'm polymorphed into an earthworm? Calypso |
| Ravashack11-10-04, 03:35 PM | I don't remember anything disallowing that. As long as you can think, that is. |
| Dr.Cornelius11-11-04, 02:38 PM | Others on the boards may know better, but I do not think there is any reason why 3.5 Psionics cannot be grafted onto a 3.0 campaign. 3.0 Psionics has some serious issues- thus the major revamp in the XPH. Is there a good reason why your DM is using 3.0 (other than the books are dirt cheap)? It turns out that 3.5 has some very important improvements and corrects many broken issues: Haste, Partial Charge, etc. There is probably a breakdown of the key differences between (non-psionic) 3.0 and 3.5 on the boards somewhere too. |
| Nightspirit11-11-04, 03:27 PM | Wasnt there an inifinate stat loop involving Animal Affinity? Might wanna do a search for that.. not sure if anything survived. Someone will come along and tell you all about it I am sure. 3.0 Psionics are teh -broken-. remember, "a power altered by metapsionic feats can never cost more power points than the manifester's level minus one" |
