I'm going to be playing in a 3E game (using most of the major 3.5 spell fixes: haste, polymorph 'tree', heal, harm & holds) as the mage. The DM has also boosted sorcerers significantly by giving them 0 spells of a level one level before they would normally get them (0 2nd level spells at 3rd level, 0 3rd level spells at 5th, etc.) plus adding bluff, diplomacy & gather info to their class list along with 4 skill points/level instead of 2, free eschew materials, but no familiar.

The party needs an arcane caster, someone with social skills & they could use a ranged attacker. I'll be starting at level 8 using 25 point buy.

I'd like to play an archer gish. For this, I'd like a mediocre BAB while not losing more than 2 or 3 caster levels.

I don't remember any of the tricks used for 3E gish, so I'll take any suggestions you have.

Any of the 3E splatbooks are available, but nothing from FR.

Thanks a ton.

All from memory; forgive innacuracy. This is revisionist history at its best. ;p

The abuses of the 3.0 gish were generally, in three sources. The Geomancer (a slow build, with 8 levels of Paladin or Ranger), the Kuni Witch Hunter (setting-specific), and the Sword Dancer (boycotted by some by requiring female characters).

Of the three, the Paladin Geomancer was the best archer, having access to Holy Sword, Bless Weapon, and Divine Sacrifice. However, it still didn't match up to the raw power of a pure-class Cleric with Persistant Spell.

Hmm, none of those are anything remotely close to what I'd hoped. I guess a 1 level dip into fighter and 4 in spellsword would be ok, but the benefits gained for losing 3 levels of spellcasting aren't all that much.

Try asking your DM if you can take levels of Eldritch Knight. It shouldn't be a stretch.
