Sorry if this already been discussed - old boards are gone,
and i haven't found anything similar on new.

Look at this guy. Most abilities a nifty, especially if we're going for Archmage PrC later on.
But true power is his flying mount thingie.
I think any minmaxer here worth his salt can easily make a sorcerer with pumped out Charisma and get a freaking DRAGON!!
as a mount... within first 10 levels. Nice, eh.
Now look at the other mounts, especially nightmare.
With its low HD this build can be done with wizard instead of sorc, if you're want.
At sixth level we get a flying horse that can make self (and rider) Ethereal for free and.... Astral Proected (one of the most broken spells in 3rd edition, methink).

Tell me i'm wrong with it. Please :)

can you add templates to the creature? do they mean ECL when they say HD?

I believe they mean hit dice, but this was also written a considerable ways back, before a lot of the mount material was more standardized. If you got too abusive with it, I imagine a DM would slap it down (and there's a good chance they might anyway, especially if you're playing 3.5), but even limiting the mount, it's a good class. I've always kind of thought of them as evil's answer the Harper Mage--in other words, a path fascilitating entry into Archmage.

A good alternative to using the mount system as they lay it out might be to consider the Zhentarim skymage as gaining a cohort, that must be a mount, as if by the Leadership feat. Possibly with a bonus to his Leadership score equal to his class level and considered to be a bonded mount as with a druid's animal companion or even following the animal companion table for effects (limited to 5th level, since it's a 5 level class, so not too overpowering I don't think.)
