Hi there. I'm about to start playing in a campaign set in a predominantly evil world. Characters are starting at 5th level. I've rolled for stats (5d6, drop two lowest, fixed), and I've come up with:

Str: 17
Dex: 14
Con: 15
Int: 14
Wis: 14
Cha: 18

Now, for quite a while now I've been considering the cool factor of playing a fiend of possession who possesses a legendary sword. The secondary factor in that would be playing a fiend of possession/thrallherd for the whole draw cohort in by psychic command, possess item and therefore cohort, if cohort dies or loses control of weapon then another cohort is quickly available plan. Unfortunately, since psionics in general has been disallowed, I believe I'll have to go with plain old leadership. Failing that, it'd be up to the whims of the DM to provide me with a suitable victim, so leadership will have to do for now. My RPing plans would be for my cohort to be 'drawn' to finding and wielding (and being possessed by) me.

So, anyhoo. As you can see I have a good set of stats, but since we're starting at 5th level I have to find myself a good form to start off in. As you can imagine, the Monster Manual is pretty limited, with most potentials being either too high in level or a little bit puny. So, I have a few questions.

1) What's a good race (evil outsider) to go that's available before or at character level 5, fits in reasonably with a lawful evil dominance/subjugation mindset, and gives me a few abilities that mesh well with possessing things?

2) Fiend of Possession is pretty easy to enter and is only 6 levels, I believe. What do people suggest that I take when it comes to core/prestige classes? I figure cleric at least might be interesting as back-up, due to the self-buffing (possess someone, they've got a kick-ass magic weapon that can buff them while they fight). The 14 wisdom and the reduced caster levels means it can't be the main focus of the character.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

After further reading, I've come to the conclusion that the Kaorti is one of the better evil outsiders to use, with a +4 Int (good for the hide check) and a whopping +6 to Cha. Total hitpoints are not so crash hot, however (6 +2d8 +10), though being ethereal should help in the short term. All in all, it's a +2 LA and 2 Outsider HD, meaning my first level of Fiend of Possession can be taken at character level 5.

One question: Does a Kaorti suffer the Material Plane damage if ethereal (due to Ethereal Form from FoP)?
