Ashlan 01-10-05, 10:57 PM	Ok, so the situation is that my regular gaming group is playing 3.5 Forgotten Realms and using the 3.0 splat books (MotW, SaF, SaS etc). I have been trying to convince them that this doesn't really follow the rules and we should be using the 'Complete' series for the added prestige classes but they (or at least the vocal ones) think they are "broken". Personally I think that base 3.5 with 3.0 books just doesn't work properly. Can anyone give me an example build that shows how mixxing the 2 is really disruptive. I have no intention of actually playing the character though so I want something that kinda sticks to the letter of the rules and either presents painful rule issues or broken character design. Ash PS. PHB 3.5 and FR books for Races, DM 3.5, FR books and Splat books for classes. None of us actually have PrC's yet and we are only level 5, but break the build for any level really.
Anguirus23 01-10-05, 11:02 PM	I don't think there's anything "wrong" with the 3.0 splatbook material. Even the stuff that's been updated can be used if preferred. However, they shouldn't write off the Complete series as broken. I play a hybrid game and I consider most if not all of the Complete series updates to be improvements. Certainly, it's wrong to write off the series as "broken" without thorough examination, and even more wrong to disallow all of that material, especially in a "3.5" game.
PhaedrusXY 01-10-05, 11:18 PM	I can give you an example of a "broken" character that combines 3.0 and 3.5 prestige classes, but I don't agree that there is anything inherently wrong or "broken" about mixing the two in general. You just have to evaluate everything on a case by case basis. But really, you should be doing that as a DM anyway. AviLazar 01-11-05, 12:30 AM	It all depends on the situation. There are broken aspects in both versions. At least in the groups I have been, we have had the rule "If it hasn't been reprinted in 3.5, then the 3.0 version can apply". This helps avoid people saying "I want to play a 3.0 cleric, with 3.0 paladin, and 3.0 ranger - but then give me ...". We apply this rule to everything - so a 3.5 spell supersedes a 3.0 for better or worse. This also makes it so the DM does not get slammed with the "you are not being fair" statements. See if your group will agree to that - otherwise - yes they are being munchkins as they are trying to get the best out of each, with minimal penalties. And while this is the min/max forum - people here try to stay within the rules and I believe 3.5 rules supersede 3.0 rules in the WoTC world.
Grim Sage 01-11-05, 05:34 AM	And you can always use the Living Greyhawk 3.5 update document... which updates the 3.0 splatbooks to 3.5. It's available at their official site. Though I agree with most here that saying the Complete series is broken is just silly... sure, there are some strong elements (Warshaper), but compare that to Miasma or the Speed armor enhancement, just to name a few. If anything it become more balanced with the Complete series (though i still mourn the loss of the 3.0 version of the OotBI and Bladesinger)
Funny Slaughter 01-11-05, 07:23 AM	i agree with Grim Sage here, overall i think the Complete Books are just fine. Personally i dont see why one should throw all the costly splat-stuff away though, with me its fine to use anything not updated and the greyhawk-updates take care of some classes with this. There are very few cases where the rules did change very much, take the shifter for instance, hard to play one within a 3.5-based game. if i was you i wouldnt try to take them their stuff away and replace it with the new one, try to make a compromise and get your complete-books in instead of this. adding them gives more power as versatility is power and more options mean exact this. gs Funny
