3.5 Archer Builds? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Does anyone have -any- recommendations? I found the best for 3.0, but they're cut down a lot when it comes down to 3.5.

OotBI no longer gets Zen Archery as a PrC ability, so the Zen Archery feat no longer applies to stacking with it for a great bonus.

Plus, while their ranged sneak attack now does d8 damage instead of d6, it's limited to a single arrow a round!

I've yet to see any 3.5 archer builds, so I'm really hoping to see some here.

I've yet to see any 3.5 archer builds, so I'm really hoping to see some here.Do you mean using only 3.5 material? 'Cause most of the 3.5er's still use 3.0 PrC's that have yet to be updated (DWS, Peerless Archer, etc).

For a solely 3.5 build I'd say Ranger 3/fighter 2/Horizon Walker 6/OotBI 9?

However, if you want builds that use some 3.0 material, but 3.5 where it has been updated, have a look at the second build in this thread. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=183604) The analysis is 3.0 (stacking bows and arrows, etc), but the build can apply to 3.5 easily enough with only a slight drop in damage.

i'm not sure what race you're using or what environment you'll be in, but Ranger 11 seems well worth it to me, with good skills, saves, bab, decent hd. you get manyshot, rapid shot, and improved precise shot for free, as well as endurance, and an animal companion and a few spells. combine with this with 4 levels of OotBI (+2d8 precison, close combat which is very nice for an archer, and greater weapon focus) and maybe some levels of rogue (for the skills, uncanny dodge, and sneak attack dice) and you'll have a pretty solid archer.

or perhaps ranger6/OotBI4/fighter2/rogue6/fighter 2

Non-Human: Ranger 2/Fighter 3/Deepwood Sniper 7/Order of the Bow Initiate 5/Peerless Archer 3 (not in that order)

Human: Fighter 4/OotBI 4 (Rest is same)

I believe that was my (almost) 3.5 Archer build; I'm not sure if DS gets its second Crit boost at 7 or 8. If it's 8, Only take OotBI 4.

This build is easy to get and gives you the most crucial abilities from all three non-elf Archer PrCs.

Deepwood Sniper is probably the best of the Archer PrCs in the game, with arrows that are automatically Keen and have a Crit of x5.

Cleric 20 and Ranger 20 are both very viable archer builds in 3.5

Complete Warrior put ther nerf on our beloved order of the bow initiate, the PrC is now only good to get close combat shot.

I wonder if we've been in the same board...

Plenty of times, Sis. :)

Snowowl! I was hoping you'd post, and here's why. I did a search for archer builds before making this thread and found that board you just mentioned in your post. Not only -excellent- builds for 3.0 there, but the best. Unfortunately, those builds were cut down some, especially with the OotBI PrC. I printed up those builds, however, so I'll check that second one out again. If I recall correctly, however, it's a sniper build more than a combat archer, no?

To answer your question, however, no and yes. Basically, my group follows whatever 3.5 changes that have been made and whatever hasn't, we'll still use. So I'd use 3.0 PrC's that have been yet to be converted to 3.5.

I'm not sure what race you're using or what environment you'll be in...

I'm personally making a character based off a favorite Marvel character of mine, Hawkeye. So, human, and a combat archer can be used in any environment if used and made right.

This really isn't just for me, though. I was hoping to see more possible builds following the most recent rules put out that anyone can check up and use if they want.

Here are a few builds I came up with:

Rogue 6/Fighter 4/Peerless Archer 10.

Not a -bad- build, but not exceedingly great, either. I like the ability to make your own arrows, to be honest, it's just a matter of time. Just pop into a rod of security with the materials you need and come out with a hundred or more +5 arrows the next round.

Rogue 6/Fighter 4/OotBI 4/Peerless Archer 6

Close Combat w/ bow. That's about the only change.

Rogue 3/Fighter 4/Deepwood Sniper 7/OotBI 4/X?/X?.

As ck2001 mentioned, those critical increasments are definitely something worthwhile. An additional level in Deepwood Sniper would get you Take Aim +4, but I personally don't think it's all that great. Cut down Fighter to level 2, and you can take 3 levels of Peerless Archer for the Power Shot, leaving an additional level that you can either put in OotBI for another d8 to Precision Strike, or Rogue. You just lose out on Weapon Specialization, if that's any important to you. :) Easily made up with Power Shot. So, something like this:

Rogue 3/Fighter 2/Deepwood Sniper 7/OotBI 5/Peerless Archer 3.

Or...

Rogue 4/Fighter 2/Deepwood Sniper 7/OotBI 4/Peerless Archer 3.

Can always replace Rogue or Fighter with Ranger, although I never found any real benefit from Ranger. Guess that's just me.

The 3.5 OotBI is crap, but it's probably worth at least 2 levels for close combat shot. Take a look at that second build again; it is a sniper, but it makes a pretty good general archer too. For a decent 3.5 combat archer probably go Ranger 1/Fighter 4/(3.5) OotBI 2/Peerless Archer 8/DWS 5. Up through 15th level it is almost exactly the same as the 3.0 build. Since you don't have Zen Archery, Free Attack, or Grt Weap Spec to shoot for with OotBI, you might as well just go with DWS. Alternatively you could add a couple more levels of OotBI to get Grt Weap Focus, then add three levels of DWS. I'd say that's probably your best option. Progress thusly: Ranger 1/Fighter 4/OotBI 2/PeerArch 8/OotBI 2/DWS 3.

You could also switch up the first 5 levels if you don't mind losing weap spec, and go Ranger 3/Fighter 2.

Wand use man, all about the wand use.

Rogue + Use Magic Device = Wand use + Sneak attack damage + Evasion + Uncanny dodge, etc. ;)

The good thing about the 3.5 OotBI PrC is that it gives a good Will -AND- Reflex save, evening your saves out in the end.

Ranger 1/Fighter 4/OotBI 2/PeerArch 8/OotBI 2/DWS 3

Probably the best way to go, you're right. I've been doing a little further research myself and can't find anything really better. However, I'm trying to find the benefit from the Deepwood Sniper PrC other than the keen arrows. Is it really worth taking the class or exceeding in just a single level in it for the keen arrows without going up more to get the eventual X5 critical?

Ranger 1/Fighter 4/OotBI 2/Peerless Archer 10/OotBI 2/DWS 1.

Or...

Ranger 1/Fighter 4/OotBI 6/Peerless Archer 8/DWS 1.

Or if you don't care about the DWS keeness ability, just get rid of it and switch Ranger to Rogue 2.

You want to at least get to DWS 2. Even if you don't get to 7th for the second crit improvement, one crit improvement is still worth it. I'm pretty sure it's better than whatever is gained at 3.5 OotBI 6 (does he get anything that level?)

add in the option of making custom items with hunter's mercy always active, do that with a rogue

I threw one together for a friend recently... weighing the heavily nerfed new OotBI, I came up with Fighter 4/Ranger 2/Deepwood Sniper 2/Order of the Bow Initiate 4/Peerless Archer 8. The last 5 levels of PA could easily be swapped out for 5 more levels of DS, if the improved critical multiplier tickles your fancy more than the ability to threaten. Also, for a sniper type (particularly one with the PA's ranged power attack ability), Deft Strike is a cool feat from Draconomicon that I don't see mentioned very often.

If you want close combat shot w/o the hassle of OotBI then take exotic weapon GreatBow and 1 level of exotic weapon master from complete Warrior for all your close combat shot fun...

Oh heck yeah! The party I DM has a Ranger11 (whole party is 11th level), and he's an amazing archer. (He spent every penny he got on a recent mercenary trip to get himself a +2 Holy Composite Longbow (Str +4), and he deals frightening damage against his favored enemies: Undead and Evil Outsiders.)

He's traded his Animal Companion and Wild Empathy for some skill bonuses and a few extra spells on his spell-list, since he's not an animal kinda guy. (His Survival check is also frightening... but that's cool, since it's an "RP" kinda thing as opposed to a "combat monster" kinda thing.)

Don't forget that Rangers get Evasion at 9th level, which is sweet for them and VERY annoying for their foes.

I think Rangers are the new Dragonslayers -- the Paladin just won't cut it any more.

Well, I take that back, a Dwarf would not take an XP penalty if you rearranged the progression. But given the progression as you listed it there is no race that would take less than 3 levels of XP penalties.

Here's what I was talking about earlier. This is the Human progression.

1 Ranger (PB Shot) (Rapid Shot) [Track] [Favored Enemy] [Wild Empathy]
2 Fighter (Precise Shot)
3 Fighter (Far Shot) (Wpn Focus)
4 Fighter
5 Fighter (Wpn Spec)
6 Deepwood Sniper [Keen Arrows] (Quick Draw) [Range Bonus +10 ft/lvl]
7 OotBI [Ranged Precision 1d8]
8 OotBI [Close Combat]
9 Deepwood (Manyshot) [Improved Crit +1] [Concealment -10%] [Magic Weapon 1/day]
10 Peerless Archer [Ranged SA +1d6] [Expert Bowyer]
11 PA [Fletching +1] (Improved Precise)
12 PA [Power Shot]
13 Deepwood [Safe poison use]
14 Deepwood [Snipe stationary foe, +2 hit]
15 Deepwood [Reroll 1 shot/day, called after roll] (Improved Rapid)
16 Deepwood
17 Deepwood [Improved Crit +2] [Reroll 2/day]
18 OotBI [Ranged Precision 2d8] (Ranged Disarm)
19 OotBI [Greater Wpn Focus]
20 OotBI [Ranged Precision 3d8]

This gives you all the best abilities of each of the three major Human Archer PrCs. I would keep going OotBI into Epic, then possibly something like more Ranger/Rogue.

If you're an Elf, you are suffering from XP penalties after level 3, so I would switch the progression to:

1 Ranger (PB Shot) [Track] [Favored Enemy] [Wild Empathy]
2 Ranger [Rapid Shot]
3 Fighter (Far Shot) (Precise Shot)
4 Fighter (Wpn Focus)
5 Ranger [Endurance]

You lose Wpn Spec, but that's life. For early epic I'd go Sorc 1, then Arcane Archer 9, which more than makes up for the lost feat.

Nifft: I thought Dragonslayers were the new Dragonslayer...:)

Actually, I'd call Ranger 1/Fighter 4/Deepwood 2/OotBI 2/Dragonslayer 1/Dragonstalker 10 the premium Dragonslaying class. You're going to have to switch 3 feats out of my Ultimate Archer build though to get Blind-Fight, Dodge and Iron Will by level 9-10. I'd drop Quick Draw and Far Shot, and push Manyshot or Improved Rapid back to 18th.
