| foxylady09-18-03, 10:04 AM | I'm interested in spell lists & feat progressions for a magic-user focused on battlefield control. Directly attacking the enemy's saves & SR is hard and feat-intensive, and let's face it the blaster mage has been done to death. I know Snow Savant is a big proponent of battlefield control, but I've never seen one of her builds (hint, hint). I'm also not sure whether wizard or sorceror is better for this concept. Assume human and 3.5 core. Any help appreciated. |
| Neonsamurai09-18-03, 10:47 AM | usefull spells: evard's tentacles + area spells solid fog + cloudkill chainspell+ray of enfeeblement dispel magic for debuffs thats from the top of my head and i must admit that i am not the best at spell usage ;) |
| rilem09-18-03, 11:25 AM | I haven't seen Snow around much lately, but a lot of her designs are still on the boards. Do a search for "battlefield" and you should come up with a bunch of threads. You can also search for posts from specific users. To start you out, here are a couple threads Enable Your Fighters (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=53201&highlight=enable) Weak Arcane Spells You Make Strong (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=50733) |

| Ranthanas09-19-03, 06:28 AM | Enlarge Spell, Extend Spell, Counterspelling feats. |
| Lojak09-19-03, 03:06 PM | I would also advocate including summoning as part of your arsenal for battlefield control. This allows you to place combatants in to block the path of your opponents, flank, or perhaps go where you cannot (i.e. spiders in your webbed areas, monsters with tremorsense in your solid fog). With this in mind, I advocate the Augment Summoning feat. At least thats the route I went for my current character who is also trying to focus on battlefield control, or at least away from blasting. |
| foxylady09-19-03, 05:05 PM | Originally posted by Ranthanas Enlarge Spell, Extend Spell, Counterspelling feats. Enlarge and Extend are clearly useful, but I don't like the Counterspelling feats because they're reactive. Action is almost always better than reaction in D&D. |
| foxylady09-19-03, 05:20 PM | How good are walls now, since they're been nerfed in 3.5 to only produce flat planes? Inability to encircle means that walls appear to be useful only in enclosed spaces. Anybody like Wall of Fire? It sure seems way too high a level for a spell that only does a couple dice of damage (admittedly with no save) using the most-well-defended element, and it doesn't even stop somebody from walking right through it. |
| Boondoggle09-19-03, 06:52 PM | Put a wall of flame along a long, narrow hallway. Nobody wants to walk through that. |
| LordShade09-19-03, 09:51 PM | Strutinan has also written quite a bit about battlefield control. While I find his builds highly questionable, some of his work on tactics is pretty good. Try searching around for some of his posts. |
| Shrou09-19-03, 11:04 PM | Ahh, but if you deticate some feats to counterspelling you could get the Reactive Counterspell feat from Magic of Faerun. It's actually quite good in my opinion. |
