| Abel07-31-03, 12:03 PM | Greetings. Some background: I wanted to try a mounted warrior, and I was looking through 3.5 I looked at a fighter, and although they get the feats easily enough, I'd be riding a 3 hit dice horse for most of my career, and that's just not good enough. I've looked at the windrider, but i dont want to wait until I'm 10+ levels before my mount-boosting powers kick in. (I also dont like too much jumping between PRCs) I know the rangers get animal companions, but the advancement is just way too slow! So in my book they dont really make the cut as mounted warriors. I've always liked druids, and they're decent warriors now that they get the "animal" buffs. I'm a 3rd level druid, and I'm feeling kinda good about the abilities my mounthas (Heavy horse, I've trained it for war) , (at +2 hd,+2 NA, and +1 str & Dex, my horsie's got quite a boost! It kicks more butt than me!) Stats (Rolled 4d6, fixed order, get an automatic 18 for "primary" stat.) Human Druid 3 Str 17 Dex 14 Con 14 Int 13 Wis 18 Chr 9 Cool eh? Feats: Mounted Combat, Ride-by-Attack,Spirited Charge. Skills: Ride,Spellcraft,Knowledge (Nature), Spot, Diplomacy,Survival Now I'd be happy to get some advice on where to take it from here. My plan: Get Dragonhide armor, ride around buffing through "share spell" bull's strength, barkskin etc. Animal growth both of us while wildshaped into a dire ape and charge into battle!? :fight!: Maybe do one level of Barbarian to get Lance proficiency, Rage, movement and Bab? (Several Brb levels?) Continue as a druid, and spend a feat on lance proficiency, take the mounted warrior thing into higher levels? Maybe go Verdant Lord for the Bab? (Yeah I know the pre-reqs wont be easy from where I am now..) Ditch the mounted warrior thing at high levels? Without having played at higher levels with anything like this, I'm quite sure my companion is going to be able to keep up without becoming a liability. (I'm really happy with the companion advancement in 3.5) Help appreciated! Oh, and please help me find a cool name for my Horse. Thank you! |
| JosephKell07-31-03, 03:01 PM | spend a feat on Lance Proficiency. And Rangers get Animal Companions about as strong as a Paladin's Special Mount, so don't squaff at the Ranger. Best Mount for Riding: Wolf after it becomes Large or Dire Wolf. |
| mormagli07-31-03, 03:21 PM | one of my first 3rd ed charachters was a mounted druid. I had a riding dog which suited me just fine (was a gnome) and made for a great charachter concept. make shure to get ride-by attack: it's a godsend for a caster edit= oops, you already have it... nevermind then |
| Abel07-31-03, 04:00 PM | JosephKnell: I like your idea about the Dire Wolf mount. I had the impression that the different categories of druid animal companions were quite even, as the ones with higher level requirements would lose out on hit dice/stats/abilities. I suppose a Dire Wolf would be more flexible terrain-wise than a horse , and look a lot cooler  But do Animal companions increase in size as they gain the bonus hit dice? Is there not a difference between "racial" and "bonus" hit dice in this regard? Thanks you two, keep the advice coming, I'm taking notes here! |
| youspoonybard07-31-03, 04:16 PM | Whoops. Saw "fixed order". I'm doing a similar thing. Wild Shape -> Animal Growth w/ reach weapon...do you know how many squares you control? That's why I like Combat Reflexes. And no, animal companions don't gain in size as they advance HD. They are also supposed to be animals, magical beasts was a typo. |
| Zack221607-31-03, 04:30 PM | Though this point can be argued either way, they are considered bonus HD, much like the paladins. Thus, the animal companions don't get bigger from bonus HD granted from being a high level druid. You would have to 'pray' for an advanced animal, but you would have to wait till a later level to acquire one. This is up to your DM though, because this is more of a house rule thing. You should go for a megaraptor as soon as it becomes available, so that you don't have to rely on animal growth for when you change into a dire ape. Plus, by the time you can get a dire bear, you can change into a legendary ape (well, you'll have to wait 2 levels...). |
| catharz07-31-03, 04:43 PM | If you can go Gnome druid, being short actually helps for being able to ride your animal companion at low levels. |
| mormagli07-31-03, 04:50 PM | yup: this is what I did, he was charging into battle at first level, doing respectible amounts of damage too (for a caster) |
| Abel08-03-03, 06:32 AM | Ok,this is the feat progression I'm considering: 1.Mounted Combat, Ride By Attack 3Spirited Charge 6. Martial Weapon proficiency : Lance 9. Natural Spell. 12. Blindsight (MotW) 15. leadership, (Nymph cohort ...?) 18. Improved initiative (Initiative becomes more important at higher levels) Comments? ideas? I'm considering doing a one-level dip in maybe fighter (For lance proficency, tower shield proficiency, heavy armor proficiency and an extra feat (improved init?). Would this be worth it? I'm well aware that it's a nono for casters to lose casterlevels, but still... I'd also like Craft Magic Arms and Armors. How does this compare with Craft Wondrous for druids? Thanks again for your help! Abel edit: Combat Reflexes seems like a good idea as well. Please help me narrow down my feat-selection. |
| piwi08-03-03, 08:32 AM | I had an idea for making a druid gnome mounted on a wolf and train it so it could carry me into combat I only don't know yet wich weapons to choose. |
| youspoonybard08-03-03, 01:05 PM | I gave up scimitar proficiency for longspear (martial for simple, but spears = teh cool : P). But if you have to take a feat, might as well take lance or something. |
| avatarolt08-03-03, 03:26 PM | Craft Arms & Armor, IMO, is a secret weapon for the druid. [Wild] on everything and ironwood anything you can carve. [Opposable] weapons mean that you're using them (and hell, if you wanna blow a companion feat, they're bombing away with weapons too). Your party's wizard will love you (and offer to help you w/the spells you don't have simply because he doesn't have to burn thing on ALL the craft feats), but the best part? Turning your allies to nature. Nothing makes you feel better than an all-wood party. Gotta pass that love for nature along, don'tchya know. (edit) youspoonybard: Yeah, I made the switch to spear on our 3.5 conversion. It's oh so ridiculous. Make the animals show you love while you poke-poke-poke. Spell-poke-smack...aaaaaaaaah, I get to play today! ;) |
| Abel08-04-03, 02:27 AM | An idea struck me yesterday. How about a level of monk? I suppose if I use wild armor, then wildshape, I'd effectively be wearing no armor, and get the armor bonus + the Wisdom bonus to AC. No? I'd also get improved grapple, which adds to the potential of an animal growthed Dire Ape Druid. (Makes me remember our most recent TPK, when we tried to grapple a Lich. We were average level 3. We failed, but had we rolled better, it would've been pinned and ready to be fed to those mist-like monsters that feed on spell-slots. And we would've gained not a small amount of XP. The DM was shaking his head since the idea to grapple it first came up, until the end of the encounter. :D (Actually one member survived, a barbarian, he made the Death spell saving throw, and the Lich couldnt be bothered.) Btw,This directly ties into why I'm making this new Druid character ;) ) I'm thinking do level 10 as monk, since I want my Large Wildshape and level 5 spells ASAP. Any thoughts on the Fighter vs Monk? More advice on Feat selection would be great. Should I even multiclass at all? Thanks guys! |
| Funny Slaughter08-04-03, 04:49 AM | suppose if I use wild armor, then wildshape, I'd effectively be wearing no armor, and get the armor bonus + the Wisdom bonus to AC. No? no. gs Funny |
| Abel08-04-03, 05:58 AM | Hmm, ok. (I dont have my books with me) Funny: Would you mind sharing your opinion on the monk/fighter level? Please? (or my Feats?) Thanks! |
| Funny Slaughter08-04-03, 06:33 AM | k, here we go. while i like mounted combat i would say you should alternate a bit between your combat-feats and some casting ones. while leadership is nice i dont really see a druid to be in need here, your animal companion and your summoning make you work all day crawling the books for stats and abilities anyhow. take a look at the druid-feats thread, or even better, at the ultimate-thread at the archived boards. if you want to you can take sf/conj) and augment summoning, one of the stronger partys of the druid gets a boost then. if you wear armor the monk-level does not give you AC. in any case i dont see a level of monk or fighter worth it to lose a casterlevel. what i would seriously consider is to dip into divine disciple or contemplative for a level, adding domain-spellcasting rocks for a druid. gs Funny |
| Abel08-04-03, 09:32 AM | Thanks! Yeah, the Monk/Fighter level is definately more Cool than Optimized. I suppose the armor/wildshape/wis bonus thing is necessary for balance purposes I like Leadership, I do believe , even with my low Cha and Animal companion penalty, that it is the best feat in the game. And this is supposed to be a campaign lasting a long time, so having a henchman is good for scheming :smirk: Oh, and my good friend and fellow player will go for a psion lich, followed by demilich, so any advice on how to make sure I can kill /assasinate/incapacitate him with my (In the not-so-near future) epic druid would be appreciated. I'm thinking Web works good against the little Flying Bowlingballs, as it doesnt allow for spell resistance/ Immunities? |
| Zoner08-04-03, 03:49 PM | Originally posted by Abel Yeah, the Monk/Fighter level is definately more Cool than Optimized. I suppose the armor/wildshape/wis bonus thing is necessary for balance purposes Magic Items solve your armor and monk issues. 1) Use Bracers of Armor, it's what monks use and stacks with all monk ac bonuses. 2) Forget the monk leve, just get the 3.5 monks belt. It's like getting 5 monk levels. |
| Abel08-06-03, 12:55 PM | Zoner: Wise words, and I just checked the price of the monk-belt, it's pretty decently priced for it's potential. (Are you guys sure it adds the Wisdom bonus as well?) So, my plan is currently to go straight druid. I've looked at the Epic book, and it looks like some of the wildshapes could give a Demilich a run for it's money coupled with some wise scheming. Plans for a cohort: with my animal companion and rather poor charisma, I wont get a very high level cohort. I'm thinking about asking my DM for a lizard man or bugbear. (It's not that far fetched for a druid ...right?) Any ideas/thoughts/comments? Oh, and I know this is not really the appropriate forum, but do you think Creeping Cold is a balanced Druid spell? There's some dissent in my group. (I'm all for it of course) About my feats: I'd like to work in combat reflexes at some point, for when I get to wildhsape into large elementals. How does this look to you? : 6.Natural Spell 9.Blindsight (Motw) 12. Leadership 15. Combat Reflexes? 18. Improved Initiative? Once more: thanks for helping! |
| avatarolt08-06-03, 02:46 PM | Creeping Cold is only questionable when you start extending it. I *believe* the official Sage ruling states that your damage caps out despite the extension: i.e., 1d6, 2d6, 3d6, 3d6, 3d6 as opposed to 4d6, 5d6 for the last two. So, depending on how you're working it currently, it could theoretically look unbalanced. But in all reality it's just a heat metal for people not wearing metal. Balanced since the victim doesn't have to bail on equipment. The range is stupid-short and the spell's wasted on anything that isn't going to be around for less than 3 rounds (and the round to close range) (read: anything but a BBEG). Watching you give away metamagic feats for combat feats makes this lil' Druid cry, but it's your character concept. Is there a reason you're attached to the whole horse idea? Maybe I'm just a lamer, but I always thought horses for druids...well, kind of bland. Couldn't ya train a brown bear to accept a rider? ;) |
| Darnek Wyrnin08-06-03, 03:11 PM | why not be the mount? i were that in an old campaign and it was very cool to play. the party didn't even know i were a druid and the fighter loved his smart little horse  |
| mormagli08-06-03, 03:51 PM | better yet, be the mount, and have your animal companion be the rider |
| kezkoal01-27-05, 12:55 PM | hi i think that u didn't need lance proficenci cos you can use large club (1d8 -2 to atack) and whit the first level spell it'll do 3d6 damage. then when charging you'll do 6d6 + 2(by the spell)+ur STRONG*3 whith a lance only do 2d8 + your strong * 4.5(it onli be better if u have strong better than 26) |
| kezkoal01-27-05, 03:06 PM | ummm not only when ve 26 STR lance is better when you ve 12 or more bonus to damage by STR or magic i i think tha u didn't need to use lance before high levels and then this feat may be more useful to do another thing. by a little cost of damage(if modifier is 13: -1; 15: -3 ; 18: -6) druid lvl 3 STR 14 +4 (bull streng) = 8 mounted in a large wolf $DG. STR 22 + 4 = 26and is to easy that it "derribe" the enemy charging: first the wolf with power atack +13 to hit. and make 1d8 + 18 then the enemi is un the flor and you atack with +4(cos the enemy probabli is in the floor): +9(+6STR +2 charging + 2BAB +1 magic - 2 size) and make 6d6 + 2*(6+1)= 6d6 + 14 ; min 20, max 50 , midle 35 if a lance it'll be 3d8 +18; min 21; max 42; midle 31.5 then the total damge is 1d8 + 6d6 + 32; min 39; max 76; midle 57.5 it only at 3 level and if it is out door probably no people may atack u |
| Snarf01-27-05, 03:41 PM | Plans for a cohort: with my animal companion and rather poor charisma, I wont get a very high level cohort. I'm thinking about asking my DM for a lizard man or bugbear. (It's not that far fetched for a druid ...right?) Any ideas/thoughts/comments? My druid's cohort is a gnoll, a Ranger/Rogue gnoll to be precise :D Then he got turned into a zombie. He got better. Now he's a Stalker of Kharash. It's been a wild ride! In general, the multi-HD humanoid races are bad character choices. Some might stand out as worthwhile, for massive STR and CON bonuses, but in general taking character levels is far more powerful than taking racial (humanoid) HD. However, if you care about the roleplaying fun (as I do) creating a cohort of a race that's usually regarded as a "monster" is a lot of fun, and the racial HD handicap means less the higher your total level gets. |
| Khazra Reborn01-27-05, 05:04 PM | Take 6 levels of lion of Talisaid. spirited charge with a lance....3*damage on a full attack! i seem to remember snow saying its possible to wildshape into an urskan (frostburn) which are very good....plus you will look way cool, especially if you make your companion/mount being a sabretooth tiger! |
