| Togashi Yokuni10-04-05, 09:20 PM | Need help putting together a Paladin that is 3.5 book based. Only 3.5 books and Faerun Races allowed. Please help me design a Paladin using these guidlines. Mixing in PrCs are cool. Want to go basically an Undead/Deamon/Devil hunter (traditional Role). Feats I should grab? Thanks much for all your guys and gals help, |
| Seeker of Truth10-04-05, 09:24 PM | Are you allowed to use the prestige paladin varient from Unearthed Arcana and the SRD? If you can I'd go that route. |
| ninjarabbit10-04-05, 09:46 PM | My favorite paladin build at the moment is paladin5/pioustemplar4/divinecrusader1/fistofraziel10, 8 smites for +19 damage, 9th level spells, and weapon specialization |

Yes I can use the Unearthed Arcana Prestige Paladin. What do you suggest is the best way to get there? 3 Fighter/2 Cleric, 1 Cleirc/4Fighter, 1 Cleric/4 Paladin then into Prestige Paladin? What is SRD? Do you suggest Human or some other race? My Die Rolls are: 17,17,17,15,14,12 (we did 4d6, re-roll 1's and drop the lowest dice). |

Quick question for ya Ninjarabbit what do you suggest for feats thru all of that. Do you go with a GreatWeapon and Platemail? Or do you go sword and board? |

The reason for this (instead of dipping Ftr) is because you want to maximize your caster levels, since we have a super-powerful spell list to take advantage of. Dwarves are also a good starting race for this character, as are Aasimars. You also have a mount, lay on hands, divine grace, divine health, aura of courage, the Inquisition domain, immunity to charms and compulsions, detect evil at will, as well as the two domains you would receive from being a Cleric. What PrC to move into now depends on what you want to advance most. Fist of Raziel is best for divine casting and smite improvement. Hospitaler is good for everything else but the smite. |
| El_Machinae10-04-05, 10:29 PM | Pious Templar and Divine Crusader are in the Complete Divine. I actually prefer Cloistered Cleric in that build (instead of Divine Crusader) mainly because I prefer getting more spells. How about: Ranger 2/Paladin 3/ Ranger 3 Grab the feats: Power Attack(1), Improved Power Attack(B), Devoted Tracker(3). The level 6 feat is free. You can choose Undead and Evil Outsiders as your two favoured enemies, allowing you a 3:1 Power Attack against them (using a two-handed weapon). Level 9, Grab a level of Cloistered Cleric (War, Destruction) and the True Believer feat. Level 10, you're good for Pious Templar and can choose whatever you want after that. |

You only get 5th level spells doing that. Anyway, Prestige Paladin and plain' ol' Paladin are two *very* different things. Prestige Paladin has much more powerful spellcasting yet weaker smiting, and actually suffers a bit more MAD than the ordinary paladin (not a problem, though, with 3 17's.) Depending on where you want to take this character, I say do something like this: Smiter/Melee Focus: Paladin 5/Pious Templar 4/Divine Crusader 1/Fist of Raziel 10 S 17, D 12, C 17, I 14, W 15, Ch 17 High smiting, High Fort/Will saves, +19 BAB, High HD, 9th level spells, but only from one domain. Theres no real point to putting perfectly good Fist of Raziel spellcasting ups into Paladin or Pious Templar, so the Divine Crusader dip gives some high-level spellcasting support. Spellcasting Focus: Cloistered Cleric 3/Church Inquisitor 4/Prestige Paladin 3/Divine Disciple 4/Contemplative 6 S 14, D 12, C 17, I 15, W 17, Ch 17 9th level spells, 7 domains (Knowledge, Inquisition and 5 others), high saves (especially Will), moderate HD. Cloistered Cleric will make it MUCH easier to qualify for Church Inquisitor before level 5 while still having decent domains to pick from. For example, if you go normal cleric then you are pretty well limited to Mystra and Tyr for deities. If you go Cloistered Cleric then basically any NG or LG deitiy can give you a large host of abilities. |

All obtainable by 3rd level. Spellcasting types should also look into Divine Oracle, though that eats a feat. Also, a mounted focus: Halfling Paladin 5/Beastmaster 1/Halfling Outrider 10/Anything 4 Cleric 4/Church Inquisitor 3/Prestige Paladin 3/Hospitaler 8/Anything 2 |

| SoulGamit10-04-05, 11:45 PM | I'd trade out one level of pious templar for contimplative, as that'll give you another domain, which will effectively double your spellcasting abilities. Also, beg and plee for the spell domain if you choose divine crusader, as it is easily the best for that class. Another thing you might want to consider is being half-fey (Fiend Folio), a +2 LA template that gives you a crapload of spell-like abilities, +4 Charisma, +2 Wisdom, +2 Dex and -2 Con if I remember correctly. It also gives you wings. The charisma can really help if your going with a smite build, and I'd add in divine might (from complete warrior). I wouldn't go both half-fey and contimplative, however. In both cases, trade in pious templar levels. As for feats, what role do you plan to play in the party? Just a damage dealer wielding a greatsword? If so I'd go for power attack, leap attack and shock trooper (so you can sac AC instead of to hit). |
| Togashi Yokuni10-04-05, 11:50 PM | Major Damage Dealer is my roll with some healing mixed in when needed. Pretty much the guy to draw the Deamon/Devil/Undead big guys away from our squishy targets. |

Actually, the Suffering domain (granted by Ilmater) gives a number of spells that I find myself liking. The War domain also gives PW: Stun, Divine Power, and a number of other toys. Spell domain does give the best versatility, but not necessarily the best power. Besides, everyone else is already devoted to Mystra. The other deities are getting lonely! As for adding Contemplative, I'm not really for it. It reduces BAB, fort saves, smite bonus damage, and a fighter feat for an expanded spell list. Considering that this is supposed to be focused more on combat, picking one good domain should be more than enough. If you want to give Healing support, then the Healing domain is basically your only refuge. If Anyspell includes Bard spells (I'm thinking they're only Sor/Wiz) then the Spell domain will probably be the best in your case. If you intend to use a template, use LA buyoff. Don't take away two Pious Templar levels, you are taking away some of the best features of the class. As for feats for the combat build, Divine Might, maybe Divine Shield, always Leap Attack, and Improved Buckler Defense among others such as Cleave and maybe Combat Brute. Depends mostly on the favored weapon of the deity, however. EDIT: *hits the floor* wahh! Since when did clerics have Knowledge (arcana) as a class skill? |
| pfooti10-05-05, 09:16 AM | I really like this one. What would you suggest for Feats? What are your thoughts on Monkey Grip with a Large Greatsword? for a nice 3d6 base damage? I don't know enough about the paladin end of things to comment, but I do know that Monkey Grip is a "flavor" feat, not a good one. If big swords are your thing, go for it. But the extra 1d6 gives you, on average, 3.5 more damage per hit in exchange for -2 to attack. Power attack with a normal 2-handed weapon gives you 4 damage per hit for -2 to attack. And power attack can be turned off if you need it or pumped up. So monkey grip really isn't worth it, unless you get into the really big size levels, where a size bump is multiple D6 in damage. |
| X-Codes10-05-05, 09:22 AM | Also, if you use this build, you are using the Deity's Favored Weapon, not whatever you want to use. I also suggest against going Deity-less, since the generic alignment weapons are even worse than any given Deity's favored weapon. Of course, you're probably safe assuming that you will be using a Bastard Sword. I mean, hell... every lawful deitiy in Faerun has that as a favored weapon. |
| Llochlyn10-05-05, 09:40 AM | For demon hunting, I know the Knight of the Chalice from complete warrior or divine is built for it Although I'm not sure it's optimal (actually, a power smiter build is probably much more powerful), try to look at it |
| El_Machinae10-05-05, 11:02 AM | Look again Machinae, Cloistered Cleric doesn't work here. You only get 5th level spells doing that. Oh, I totally understand that the character won't get as high level spells, but at those levels, you won't be doing much casting during combats anyway. I like the Cloistered Cleric because a) it's got a great spell list (for using wands, staffs, scrolls) and b) because it will work much much better when you go epic with FoR. I'd trade out one level of pious templar for contimplative, as that'll give you another domain, which will effectively double your spellcasting abilities. You'd need a fairly liberal DM for that. The Divine Crusader gets one 'known' spell per level (unless you use the Alignment Domains from the Planar Handbook), and adding an additional domain means that you can fill that one "known" slot with one of two spells. They cast like sorcerers. PS: The Divine Crusader is a SOLID choice, don't get me wrong, I just like having more options. PPS: if you're really interested in an undead-killer, check out the Hunter of the Dead - you'll need a DM ruling to see if the Pious Templar adds that smite as well. |
| Togashi Yokuni10-05-05, 11:16 AM | I will look over Hunter of the dead also. Question I am not finding Leap Attack anywhere. Which book is it in and what does it give me as a feat? I take it has a pre-req of Power Attack? |
| El_Machinae10-05-05, 12:24 PM | Leap Attack is in the Complete Adventurer. It's part of the Power Attack tree. I actually really like it with the Ranger/Paladin combo up above - multiplying Power Attack goes a long way sometimes. |
| ninjarabbit10-05-05, 07:32 PM | Here's a crazy idea with the paladin5/pioustemplar4/divinecrusader1/FoR10: Be an elf paladin with racial subsitution from Races of the Wild or the ranged smite feat and take the elf domain, you can make yourself a nice ranged paladin |
