As some of the longer-time readers know, some of the regulars on the Character Optimization boards have started games on the Real Adventures boards. Currently running are City of the Spider Queen and Maure Castle. Both of these games use highly optimized characters and pits them against optimized encounters. The original intention was to demonstrate the ability of optimizers/min-maxers to play in a role-play heavy environment, as well as to showcase some talent.

Tomb of Horrors (Updated!) (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/oa/20051031a)

This is one of the quintessential adventures of the D&D game. And now that its updated, I think that it is the perfect time for a new generation of COers to step up to the plate and show off what they can do! Since the setting is unspecified, there could even be 3 running: Greyhawk, Faerun, and Eberron.

I have no desire to run the game; I pose this merely as a challenge for all the "young-bloods" to see what they're made of. And to raise awareness of our currently-running games =).

Meh, old school modules just don't mesh with 3.x. Yeah, you can update The Tomb and it'll be playable, but it still isn't The Tomb, you know?

No, but it's close enough for the new kids. As for builds, I'm running the update tonight, so I'm not going to have a character, but I'd probably go with some sort of Gray Elf Rogue with high Search and Disable Device so as to auto-find those secret doors and to bypass some of the traps. That, or a generalist wizard, since, as it says, there are few monsters around and no wandering monsters, making it much easier to scout out what the challenges are and then prepare appropriate spells.

Reading through the Tomb of Horrors update it gives a link to an art gallery which is supposed to include a map (same one as in the write-up, however I was hoping for higher resolution so I could print it out on multiple pages so it would still look good). I don't see the map, apparently it was left out. Does anyone know of an alternative place the map might be?

You'll want a diviner. And while you'll need rogues, you'll need rogues who aren't helpless against undead.

A friend and I once discussed running as a two-person party in an updated Return to the Tomb of Horrors (with cohorts, of course), with 21st-level characters. We were planning on either two dual-casters (one of arcane/divine, arcane/psionics, or divine/psionics), or a dual-caster and another type of multiclassed caster, most likely a rogue/caster of some sort. The cohorts would have filled whatever roles we couldn't with our characters: under discussion were divine caster with a support emphasis, rogue, and bard. We had planned for boatloads of divination: wands of augury, foresight up at all times, that sort of thing.

So I take it nobody is interested in starting up a game?

I gotta tell ya, having played the original, it's not as much fun as you might think. This is the pinnacle of Gygax dungeon crawling, full of rooms where the real trick is to guess what Gary's thinking, or you'll suffer the effects of table 11.9.

No thank you.

Oh, I don't know; I LIKED the Tomb.

'Course, the first time I played it, I wound up taking out Acererak with a Bag of Holding.

Good times, good times...

I'd be interested in playing in it, but not running it. I'm stretched enough for time as it is.

I know this sounds stupid and its sad but what does morph do? :rolleyes:I'm not even seeing what you are referring to, did you post to the wrong thread? In any case, morph is usually shorthand for polymorph.

I'm actually running a game right now on the boards for it (before they came out with the 3.5 version). So far the players are up to the "false tomb" room.

I'd play in it, but not run it.

This is neither here nor there...but I am running this for my group on Tuesday with a 9th level party, should be um...interesting since the party rogue, isn't very roguelike :P

Blade ... or whomever is interested in running or playing in this game ... I'd be glad to help with the game set-up or administration prep.

As Blade2718 stated in his original post, the WotC Real Adventures forum is a great place to run an online game of D&D. I'm in both Rilem's Maure Castle and Balthanon's CotSQ game (both of them are C.O. regulars) ... and they are both a lot of fun!

My personal feeling is that a highly optimized party specializing in skills, trap & puzzle cognition, and fighting undead & constructs should do just fine in the Tomb of Horrors. From what I've heard of the grognards that have played the original, stupid-to-average players will die by the bucketfuls. Savvy, cunning players need only apply. :smirk:
