| VolkorTheRed10-31-03, 09:58 AM | In a short while we will start a new dragonlance campaign. Because of the fact that the DM, who will master it, views Krynn as an low magic world, our new characters don't really have the opportunity to buy magical items. Our party start out as 6th level characters. Mine will be a Wizard5/Wizard of High Sorcery1. We get 3000 GP per character to spend on our starting equipment. Does anyone know what i could buy (everything except alchemical or magical equipment/weapons/items) ? Also: we can buy healing potions, to include in our starting equipment, but the cost of those is increased by 50% :D Thx for reply's... :) |
| MarkusH10-31-03, 10:11 AM | Will your GM allow special materials? 3000 is nothing if you want to buy adamantine or mithril equipment, not to mention some of the more bizarre stuff out of non-core books. Can you buy other types of potions or just healing potions? What rules is the GM using for learning new spells? If I'm starting a wizard above first, most of my money goes into purchasing and learning new spells. Does he allow item creation feats? (Like your scribe scroll.) You can spend some money on scrolls pretty quickly. If you picked up craft wonderous or craft arms and armor, 3000 will go pretty quickly. Of course, you will have to spend some xp, so if he starts you at exactly 6th, that may be a problem. Hope this helps. |
| SoulLord10-31-03, 10:45 AM | what race is your wizard? if hes an elf he could purchase some fine elven (masterwork) blade or bow other than that perhaps a mithril buckler? SoulLord |
| VolkorTheRed10-31-03, 12:55 PM | Soullord; The wizard is a NG human, his hometown is Sanction. (you never know when this is information someone can use ;) ) MarkusH; Well, i don't think the DM will tolerate any other magical potion or special materials. Certainly not Mithril or some kind of equal material... I believe he mentioned i could use the money to make scrolls or scribe extra spells. Problem is, that i start the campaign originally as an 4th lvl sorcerer and then make the switch to Wizard, when the Gods return to Krynn... :D So, i don't really know yet how he will rule that... (Gonna ask him rightaway though :D) Note: the main stat ability for my spellcasting (even as a Sorcerer) stays my Intelligence. :) |
| Morka10-31-03, 01:14 PM | Since you are a wizard, can't you craft yourself some items? It will cost you some feats, but at higher level, you will be able to craft absolutely anything, so no need to wait the item be available at the next Magic Items shop! Edit: Sorry, didn't notice someone already spoke of this. |
| BenjCano10-31-03, 01:16 PM | You're absolutely right, Morca. As a matter of fact, when you take an item creation feat at character creation, you can buy items made by that feat at half price, just as if you'd made them yourself. |
| MarkusH10-31-03, 01:29 PM | I'm assuming that he will allow you to convert those sorceror levels into Wizard levels. (Sorc 4/Wiz 1 bites, and I don't think it qualifies for the PrC, although I'm not terribly familiar with the Wizard of High Sorcery). If that is the case, I'd go for buying spells. A wizard's strength lies in versatility. The more spells you have, the better you are going to be. And spells are expensive. Scrolls also allow you to increase your variety of spells that you have ready. While you don't often need the Arcane Lock spell (for example), when you do need it, you will really want it ready to go. Having that scroll of Arcane Lock means you can memorize another spell in it's place. If I were your position, I'd put a few hundred aside for mundane equipment (perhaps a masterwork item or two), spend most of the money on spells, and spend the rest on making scrolls. (Although since you can't buy scrolls from others, I am wondering how the DM is going to charge for buying the spells in the first place.) |
| eudas10-31-03, 02:37 PM | buy yourself an assload of normal stuff; so while the other characters may have a nice sword, shield, and armor, you will have a conestoga wagon, packed full with items, a team of horses/oxen, and a couple of retainers to handle animals/guard things/carry things/be go-for boys. just my $0.02, eudas |

Edit: Sorry, didn't notice someone already spoke of this. Thought of that myself, but can't do it; i need the feats i have to qualify for the prestige class of Wizard of high sorcery (My DM wants me to take the PrC as soon as possible, that being on 6th character level :D ) |

Use maybe 1000gp or so of the remaining money to buy some land. 500gp should get you some basic chicken coops and a crude silo. The remaining money can be spent on about 50 tons of grain (1cp = 1 pound) and some tools. Make sure you get the spell 'unseen servant' for cheap labor. You should be making at least 10 GP per day on eggs alone. After things get going, having the unseen servants slaughter and dress the chickens to keep the population stable should bring at least 25 GP a day as well. Seriously. If you cannot buy any spells, magic items or alchemical items WHAT THE HELL ELSE IS THERE FOR A WIZARD TO BUY? If your DMs game is as low magic / low money as it sounds, your character should be earning WAY more money as a chicken farmer than by risking your neck killing monsters and do-gooding. In a good year, you should earn over 4x (a little over 12,000 GP) as you did as a wizard for 6 entire levels. |

| Ryunnosuke10-31-03, 05:07 PM | I like your idea, Dirichlet. |
