Alright, over at 3rdedition.org, the discussion whether Clerics are more powerful than Druids, or vice versa, is being settled with a best 2 out of 3 match-up, with 4 druids going against 4 clerics.

Although most people are favoring the clerics, i decided to toss my aid to the druids, and am looking for suggestions on possibilities. The rules are as follows:

1) The tournament will be run and moderated solely by me (Mercutio). As DM, I will roll all dice and determine all outcomes of effects. There will be a discussion thread where we can discuss technical questions or rulings. Provided play has not progressed to the next turn, I reserve the right to edit rulings and redetermine outcomes. If such a thing does occur, any party that posted actions after my ruling will have 24 hours to edit their actions. All my determinations will be made public within these boards.

2) Matches will take place on a play-by-post basis. Each team will have 24 hours to post their actions for their turn, starting from when the I post the results of the last turn. Weekends are excepted from this rule. Failing to post on time forefits your actions during that round. Effectively, 1 round of combat will be 48 hours IRL.

3) Teams will need to win a best 2 out of 3 competition. The first competition will occur using The Fane of Lolth tileset as a location. It's 150ft x 110ft.

4) Location on the Board should be expressed Direction/Letter/Number. For instance NE/B/2. Standardizing locations in this way will make it easier to reference quickly.

5) We will be using standard D&D rules, not Miniature Skirmish Rules. All current rules (specifically Polymorph errata) will be used.

6) Each team will get a side of the arena to start on, rolled randomly. Once starting side is determined, a character can enter play from any square along that side.

7) Players will have one hour prep time before stepping foot in the arena. This will allow time for buffs. This is still negotiable.

8) There will be five threads in addition to this one. The main thread will be the actions and resolutions. The Druid OOC thread will be for druids to discuss options and plan actions - this will be limited to the four druids only. The Cleric OOC thread will be for the clerics to discuss options and plan actions - this will be limited to clerics only. The Spectator Thread will be for observers to post. The last thread will be a discussion thread where characters can challenge DM rulings.

9) Play will end with the last team standing. They will be declared the winner of that match and will get to choose the next map. The losing team will get to choose which side to start on for the next battle.

Character Creation Rules
32 pt buy method for stats
200,000 experience
Standard Wealth per DMG
Only one base class allowed - must be a cleric or a druid. Remember, this is to determine who's stronger, clerics or druids. Since this is the case, alignments between party members are not an issue.
Roleplay is not necessary as this is simply a mechanical exercise to determine relative power.
Characters should be posted in the character thread NLT 1200 EST on March 6th.

does it allow for Prcing?
if so I have an idea or two...

druid7/Master of many forms10/warshaper3(your melee buff, taking dragon forms is fun)

druid20(focus on summoning)

druid20(focus on buffing)

druid20(focus on summoning and buffing)

Okay, so you have two druids who hang back and use the rapid spell feat to toss out summon nature's ally like mad, another who tosses out buffs onto said summoned animals(and your companions too) and a last who tactially wades into combat and breathes on/claws/eats the clerics. remember to use your animal companions to your advantage, 4 dire tigers who leap on and grapple the clerics to limit mobility and flexibility, and aim for their reflex saves, and make with the dispel magic, as they have divine metamagic on their sides.

I dunno how else to help without more specifications.

I guess no, read the following lines:
Only one base class allowed - must be a cleric or a druid.
I say go straight druid, and get Draconic Wild Shape at level 12. Then just wild shape to a shadow dragon and level drain/attack them.

Only base class?! There goes half the power of Cleric -- the power to have no freekin' class features after level 1, and thus the power to freely PrC with no loss of anything I care about.

yeah I guess if no prcs then just get draconic wildshape as he said up there, I'd recommend going armorless and getting monk's belts, it's a better investment, as well, and as i said, sim for their ref saves, and the shadow dragon negative level thing is genious

Sorry if that wasnt clear; it was discussed more thoroughly over there, and i didnt paste any of the discussions here.

Prestige classes ARE allowed, but only the Cleric or Druid can be used for base classes.

I've been perusing the Druid's Handbook on here for more ideas, too. Looks like the consensus is for 2 summoners, 1 buffer, and 1 tank/wildshaper?

Spell Compendium
This grants acess to some pretty powerful spells, particuarly "the bite of the X" spell tree.
A pretty solid tank build is:
human druid10/human paragon3/sacred exorcist2*/druid11=15
*use extra spell to qualify
You have acess to divine metamagic. You have acess to libris mortis & therefore nightsticks. You can therefore persist as many spells as you want.
So, go for a combat character.
Persistant:
animal growth
natures favour
natures avatar
spikes
bite of the werebear

This results in 4 attacks/round with a bronzewood mace held 2handed, a str of 54 without items, +13 attack/+23 damage per attack from spells, PA feat free and large size if you feel like grappling. It wipes the floor with the so called "cleric tanks" about.

Not sure how to incoperate this, or if it is really necessary, but I believe that a way to use "Mordenkain's Disjunction" is important. The Clerics will have a lot of spells persistent, so if you could disjunct them, they won't be very strong. Maybe a way to get either an arcane caster level, or some way to get UMD.

try taking a level of Contemplative...and pick the Domain(Magic)...something like this:

Druid 18/ Sacred exorcist 1/ Contemplative 1

you can even take the feat...Domain Spontenaity(Magic domain) ...and cast it several times, and still use Divine Metamagic(persistant) your self(provided you have enough Nightstick rods)

you cant qualify for sacred exorcist with stright druid, you need knowledge (the planes) iirc. Thats why i took human paragon for my build

As he is level 18, he will be able to have enough skill points in it, even if it is a cross-class skill. Or he can take Education.

i thought you had to have the skill from 1 class to be able to get it as a crossclass skill....?

notice:
SKILLS SUMMARY

If you buy a class skill, your character gets 1 rank (equal to a +1 bonus on checks with that skill) for each skill point. If you buy other classes’ skills (cross-class skills), you get 1/2 rank per skill point. Your maximum rank in a class skill is your character level + 3. Your maximum rank in a cross-class skill is one-half of this number (do not round up or down).

Using Skills: To make a skill check, roll:

1d20 + skill modifier (Skill modifier = skill rank + ability modifier + miscellaneous modifiers)
This roll works just like an attack roll or a saving throw— the higher the roll, the better. Either you’re trying to match or exceed a certain Difficulty Class (DC), or you’re trying to beat another character’s check result.

Skill Ranks: A character’s number of ranks in a skill is based on how many skill points a character has invested in a skill. Many skills can be used even if the character has no ranks in them; doing this is called making an untrained skill check.

Ability Modifier: The ability modifier used in a skill check is the modifier for the skill’s key ability (the ability associated with the skill’s use). The key ability of each skill is noted in its description.

Miscellaneous Modifiers: Miscellaneous modifiers include racial bonuses, armor check penalties, and bonuses provided by feats, among others.

Each skill point you spend on a class skill gets you 1 rank in that skill. Class skills are the skills found on your character’s class skill list. Each skill point you spend on a cross-class skill gets your character 1/2 rank in that skill. Cross-class skills are skills not found on your character’s class skill list. (Half ranks do not improve your skill check, but two 1/2 ranks make 1 rank.) You can’t save skill points to spend later.

The maximum rank in a class skill is the character’s level + 3. If it’s a cross-class skill, the maximum rank is half of that number (do not round up or down).

Regardless of whether a skill is purchased as a class skill or a cross-class skill, if it is a class skill for any of your classes, your maximum rank equals your total character level + 3.
