| Silmarillius03-22-05, 09:20 PM | I'm creating a 4th level character for dnd 3.0. I'm looking for a powerful character, sky is the limit! All 3.0 supplements apply. |
| Mr. Dog03-22-05, 10:05 PM | In 3.0, Cleric Archer. Or a Wizard going towards wiz5/Red wizard 10/ Archmage 5. |
| Deathson03-22-05, 10:23 PM | Said Wizard should be a necromancer. |
| Odnasept03-22-05, 11:16 PM | Greetings Nift. It is I, Firestar (as if you couldn't tell from the handle). As you can see, the Optimizers here truly know their stuff. However, you must make it apparent what books are available for you to choose from. I'm not sure all of the proposed builds are viable for the Lakelands. I'd have to say I like the Wizard idea, though. At the very least, you're only one level away from Fireball! Cheers, Odnasept |
| Silmarillius03-22-05, 11:48 PM | Firestar, greetings from the afterlife. I'm not really thinking about playing a magic user for my next character. So, I shall specify what type I want: A fighter type, a paladin type, a ranger type, pretty much anything other than a magic user. Again, all DnD 3.0 material is acceptable. |
| Silmarillius03-23-05, 11:27 AM | OK, I've decided on a character. He's a 1st level Halfling Rogue/3rd Level Fighter. He specialized at creating and using his own weapons. Any ideas are welcome. |
| Mokopolis03-23-05, 01:31 PM | OK, I've decided on a character. He's a 1st level Halfling Rogue/3rd Level Fighter. He specialized at creating and using his own weapons. Any ideas are welcome. Why take the 3rd level of Fighter? you don't really get any benefits from it other than the good BAB. Why not take a level of Barbarian or Ranger? if your worried about an XP penalty later on, you could just take a second level of Rogue... |
| Abulafia03-23-05, 01:42 PM | I shall specify what type I want: A fighter type, a paladin type, a ranger type, pretty much anything other than a magic user. Again, all DnD 3.0 material is acceptable. If it's 3.0, you might as well abuse the 1-level dip: Rgr 1/Pal 1/Ftr 2 Or swap out the pally level for rogue (Rog 1/Rgr 1/Ftr 2) if you like that concept better. Here's a build: 1 Dodge 2 Ambidexterity, Track, TWF 3 Weapon Finesse (kukri), Weapon Focus (kukri) 4 Mobility And you're on your way to Weapon Master. Two keen vorpal kukris in the hands of a weapon-finessing halfling weapon master is a scary sight, indeed. |
| scrollreader03-23-05, 01:57 PM | Kukri is exotic in 3.0. Not a bad build at all, however. |
| Belldandy03-23-05, 02:35 PM | For 3.0 I`d BEG you to play my halfling. I never managed to get him high enough and then the feckers changed the rules in 3.5 He was a rogue 3, fighter 1, Ranger 1, barbarian 1, Ninja of the cresent moon Taking full use of expert tactician feat and finesse, he could have a SILLY armour class! Rogue at first, then pick as you want, he was a two weapon knife fighter (though short swords with the "oversized weapon fighting" seems to work well?) Running in the darkness, stabbing with sneak and causing much pain! Soon to be a ninja and gain mass powers of evil. (to be used for good of course!) He was great fun to play. By 4th level when I played him (I got him to 6th level) he`d already killed a dragon and a giant (that was at 2nd level!) His AC at first level was amazing. Just get the dex and rage if things go wrong for extra damage! (or take fighter rather than barbarian, but I liked the fact he could move as fast as everyone else then!) Plus boots of haste to pick up (and if you`re allowed, shield spell a few times a day) make you nigh unstoppable. My GM actually planned to kill him, failed repeatidly until he started using VERY dodgy tactics and rolls! May he rest in pieces! |
| Odnasept03-23-05, 03:42 PM | You may want to take Belldandy up on her offer. This build has some real potential, and it isn't too far removed from your own 'Batman' build. Thine, Odnasept |
| Belldandy03-23-05, 04:13 PM | Hmm whats this batman build? Meanwhile if you want added fun. Make him a brother or friend of "Tenath of Sembia"! :) and let the flanking raging two wielding weapon ball of fury savage his opponents! :D (mine was chaotic neutral, as he hung around good and evil groups in his time. He also tried his hand at poison collection (and selling for vast sums of money!) just watch out for them dragons!) ;) can`t BELIEVE he got eaten...  |
| Odnasept03-23-05, 04:49 PM | Alright, I'll tell you what I mean by 'Batman build', but you tell me what kind and age of dragon your character slew, and what kind and age of dragon they were slain by! By 'Batman build', I mean that Silmarillius told me he wanted to play him sort of like Batman, what with him designing his own weapons and having both thief and warrior abilities. So you would recommend Rogue 3/Barbarian 1 for maximum effectiveness? What kind of ability scores/point buy would you use (or rather, what kind did you have)? Who knew that Tenath of Sembia's brother was really....Batman the Barbarian?!? Thine, Odnasept |
| Belldandy03-23-05, 05:23 PM | Well I`m not sure (it was a long time ago) The dragon he slew was a green dragon, large size (but young) It was in an evil game and the GM hated it (strangely it was one of the best games the rest of us had ever played!) So he`d designed the encounter so that we couldn`t fight. Apparently my character (who he didn`t mind) could run away but everyone else would have to give up all their equipment to the dragons treasure, or be killed. We didn`t know that. We fought. (at 4th level) In the first round the wizard got melted to less than goo, the fighter past half hit points, and the cleric dying on the floor (gotta love evasion!) Then for the next 2-4 rounds the fighter and me tried hacking it (difficult with it`s AC!) until it could breath again and the fighter became goo! (At this point it was me and a stabalised yet useless cleric) I somehow finshed of fthe remaining 80% of it`s hit points on my own and saved the cleric (and myself!) it was a fight to remember (the dead cheering me on!) I died to a huge black dragon, level 7 character. Diffeent GM and game, same character. It turned out I was fine, getting one hit a round maybe... until it got four hits, two being criticals... My party? They`d all been acid burned and ran off. For two rounds in the dark, my character waited for help whislt taking in the dragon, whilst everyone milled about and did nothing. In the end 4 characters died (two rescuing me AFTER I was down! Why they didn`t help before i have no idea!!! grrr!!!) But I had managed to get boots of speed and shield. (Whenever I activated the boots of speed, a shield spell would also be in effect) so activation was a free action, for 14 rounds a day (rather than a 3lvl spell and a 10th level caster, I had haste extended by a 7th level caster, turned out better and cheaper!) I got haste and shield. In 3rd ed, increasing my AC by 11, as a free action, and an extra standard action! (move and full attack anyone!?) The GM wanted my character dead to remove that item from the game. in his words: "The boots are so utterly disolved by acid it`s as if they never existed!" (and he never allowed any such item again!) Barbarian 2 give uncanny dodge which can be fun, as otherwise you don`t have it. Rogue first for skill points, then barbarian, then yup, rogue 3 would be good. you got sneak attack, evasion, uncanny dodge (3RD ED!!! WOO HOO!!!) Next take fighter or ranger... I just remembered, you need 7 levels (as lose a BA from rogue, 6 required) Rogue 3 Ranger 1 Barbarian 1 Fighter 2 I think that was the order. Ranger gives you the two weapon style, probably more use at the moment to barbarian, thouth up to you! |
| Belldandy03-23-05, 05:28 PM | My GM wouldn`t let me bring him back (he actually FORBADE ME!) So my new one was an elven cleric. She made her own armours! twas fun! here below! http://www.geocities.com/egrek2000/belldandy.htm I also had a sorcerer with alchemy, the things you can do with smoke, flashes, acids and fires is great! If you`re wanting to get dudey devices, smack up you craft alchemy!!! |
| Odnasept03-23-05, 06:42 PM | Hmmm, well, I have an extremely high number of ranks in Knowledge (Dragonkind) (much like the Lady displayed in my avatar), so let's see what I can make of those dragons.... Assuming the youngest type of dragons for their size category: The Large Green Dragon was a Juvenile at CR 7-8. If your average party level was 4, that must have indeed been a fight to remember. I'm not at all surprised that your entire party was reduced to negative hit points in almost nothing flat, but it is very remarkable that you were not, and also that you were able to deal so much damage to it. What were you doing? Sneak attacking? Raging? Stabbing it in the throat while riding it? All of the above? The Huge Black Dragon was a Mature Adult(!). Its CR was 14! Level 7 characters WILL be slain by such a beast, unless it is being played as a world-class Disposable Dragon(tm). What I find remarkable is that you were 'fine, getting off one hit a round maybe', particularly when the rest of the party had abandoned you (that particular dragon is often more devastating with its melee attacks than with its breath weapon). 'Tis true, those were a very awesome pair of boots you had, but still.... Tell me, what was your Attack Bonus/AC, and what were your Ability Scores? If we could duplicate that in our campaign with Silmarillius' character.... Thine, Odnasept P.S. I checked out your site. Very nice and very informative! |
| Silmarillius03-23-05, 11:42 PM | Belldandy, I have to see this character. It's almost god like! If you don't want to post him send him to my email: darkest_sage@hotmail.com |
| Belldandy03-24-05, 10:32 AM | Better get on it. Will Tenath live again? I was a few years ago (but my group still talks of him!) It was with a new group and I was the only player who`d played before. So they took that as something to aim at! We`re continuing our game online (but don`t think you can see it! Private only?) As the GM is american and we`re all english! As for Tenath. I`ll get writing him up (If I can remember him) I can actually ASK the GM what the dragon was, he might well have been a large black dragon. But we entered his lair, in a tunnel, he acid streamed the lot. I charged as everyone said they would, then they all realised how dead they were and legged it, so I got hacked up. (our GM wouldn`t have put in a CR 14 dragon aginst a 7th level group!? I`ll go ask!) http://www.geocities.com/egrek2000/tenath.htm (but give it a while as it`ll take some time) |
| Belldandy03-24-05, 10:58 AM | I was playing him at 2nd level in an online game as rogue 1, Barbarian 1. Scary as ANYTHING! He had all the skills, a load of hit points, could rage and do a stupid bit of damage... Just remember you`re small and nasty. You are an antihero... Poison is your friend as wella s ANY advantage you can get (if dirty fighting was better!) hehehehe Like my cleric belldandy, neither were amazing builds (but they work if played right) If you can get away with NINJA base class from Oriental adventures (or Rokugan) get a load of that! Full base AND sneak! Fantastic... for me it was banned... |
| Silmarillius03-24-05, 11:23 AM | Yes, my DM is allowing the use of the Oriental Players handbook for his campaign. |
| Belldandy03-24-05, 11:44 AM | Well he works. But if you want to go for an assassin extrordinaire. Look into a human Scropion ninja. Feat 1: Scorpions style (or soemthing like that) add intelligence to initiative Feat 2-6: Scorpions sting (or soemthing like that) plus D6 SNEAK ATTACK!!! Ninja gives you some STUPID things: Full base attack Sneak attack every 2 levels (like rogue) uncanny dodge (like rogue) Ninja dodge at 1st and every 5 levels after (stackable dodge - see if you can get 3.5 tactical feat: Evasice target, works WONDERS! together!) 4th level: add intelligence to initiative (recognise from above? they stack) 8th level: Speed of darkness (add 5ft x con to speed!) Not sure if it has a alignment requirement, but the STUPID thing is that you can`t get into NotCM with it. As you need evasion. So try 8 levels of that. 2 levels of monk (for many of the required feats) Then 10 levels of NotCM At 4th level you`d have: BA +4 SA +2D6 (maybe even 4d6?) Intelligence to inititative (maybe twice?) Ninja dodge +1 (just like feat, and DOES stack!) Uncanny dodge Poison use 4+int skills I think H,1,3, feats (for extra into to initiat and sneak attack?) I mean what more could you want? ;) |
| Caelic03-24-05, 12:23 PM | Just to clarify: the Ninja of which Belldandy speaks isn't in Oriental Adventures; it's in Rokugan, and is technically third-party material (which is why it's not used very often on these boards.) |
| Belldandy03-24-05, 12:50 PM | Just to clarify: the Ninja of which Belldandy speaks isn't in Oriental Adventures; it's in Rokugan, and is technically third-party material (which is why it's not used very often on these boards.) and much fun when it is allowed! :P |
