| Callista04-28-05, 02:47 AM | On our newest adventure, from an e-mail from our DMs (multiple ones... big group): "We will be playing 20th level characters. Stats are rolled best 3 of 6 at least one needs to be 18. Items are whatever you can afford for the 760,000gp you get at 20th level. You are each entitled to a mount of CR 10 or less. Anything goes that can travel over land (my character is riding a large Sand Dragon). Mounts will have separate sheets for the sake of simplicity. We'll be in the desert so plan accordingly." FYI, this will be a short-term weekend thing... and these are going to be seriously overpowered characters! Naturally, the DMs are going to come up with equally overpowered monsters... Soo... any ideas? What should I do with the rope I have been given with which to hang myself? *pictures DM statting up a Tarrasque Swarm* *shudders* Books Available: What I do have: Player's Handbook Dungeon Master's Guide Monster Manual I Monster Manual II Fiend Folio Arms & Equipment Guide Book of Vile Darkness Masters of the Wild Monsters of Faerun Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting Unapproachable East Character desired: Some sort of arcane and/or divine caster, as versatile as possible. My group is usually short on these. I do want a plausible character... so no half-red-dragon trolls. I've been thinking about playing something that's tiny-sized or smaller, actually, which I think would be cool... (And yeah, in case you're wondering, this is a short-term campaign thing. We do not usually do munchkin-fests like this one!). Soo... yeah, any ideas? |
| PhaedrusXY04-28-05, 02:57 AM | Play a Sylph. They are small, cute, and make good sorcerers. They were given an official Level Adjustment in the 3.5 update for the Monster Manual 2. You could also go with a Petal or Jermaline Druid. Here is a repost of Lord Shade's Sylph character from a really old thread. She is small, but sexy. Her name is Leene, and I think I am in love. I would not have found her if it were not for Balthanon, who introduced me to her sister Iriel. I liked Iriel too, but unfortunately she was already taken. This one is my own. You may be thinking, "Who is this chick, Shade, and why do you like her so much? Is she a fighter/mage/thief?" Well if you saw her measurements you would like her too. Behold: Leene Neutral Good Outsider Magic-Blooded Sylph14 (9HD, 5LA)/Witch Hunter2/Sacred Exorcist4 Assuming standard array, her stats are: Str 8 (10 -2) Dex 15 (13 +2) Con 12 (14 -2) Int 16 (12 +4) Wis 12 (8 +4) Cha 23 (15 +8) (all stat mods into Cha) code:-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Sylph1 Spellcasting Prodigy, darkvision 60', fly 90' (good) 2. Sylph2 3. Sylph3 Education* or Versatile (Knowledge: Planes and Religion) 4. Sylph4 somewhere in here she gets SR 14, improved invisibility at will, and 5. Sylph5 Summon Monster VI (large elemental) 1/day, and all of her stat mods (+14 in total) 6. Sylph6 7. Sylph7 8. Sylph8 Sylph fixed advancement (3HD and 5LA) done 9. Sylph9 (4HD, max skill ranks 7) 10. Sylph10 11. Sylph11 (6HD) track feat 12. Sylph12 (7HD, max skill ranks 10) 13. SE1 Turn Undead, Exorcism Domain (gives Magic Circle against Evil for Witch Hunter), Chosen Foe +1, 5 skill points into K:Arcana 14. SE2 Resist Possession, Detect Evil**, 10 ranks of K:Arcana, open feat 15. WH1 Kami's Grace, Detect Evil** 16. WH2 Smite Evil 17. Sylph13 (8th HD of sylph, max out ranks in important Sylph class skills such as move, hide, survival, spot and listen), open feat 18. SE3 Extra Turning 19. SE4 Dispel Evil 1/week, chosen foe +2 20. Sylph14 (max out ranks again), open feat -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *Education is a 1st-level feat only. However, I'd make the case to my DM that my character sent her off to school when he summoned her to the Prime Material (when she was a 3HD sylph). YMMV, of course. If your DM won't let it fly, Versatile works fine (but is a slightly weaker feat when you are picking only knowledges). **See if you can get your DM to change this to Detect Undead. Reason being, Witch Hunter also gives Detect Evil at will. You don't want redundant abilities, even though it is a tiny difference in the power level of your character. At level 20, this character has: 18th-level Sorcerer casting, plus Exorcism domain spells; BAB +14; HD 15d8+con (avg 71+con, in this case 86hp); Base saves +10 +7 +13 +kami's grace and ability scores; Base skill points 112 (counting 16 int, 166sp); Can track very well, as Sylph and WH both have survival as a class skill. And a fun mix of spell-likes and class abilities. The 3 open feats should probably go to sorcerer type feats, either spell foci or metamagics. If playing for fun (not pure minmax) I might take Genie Lore (air) and Calishite Elementalist (air). Is Leene a fighter/mage/thief? Well, depends on how you define "thief". The awesome Outsider HD give 8/sp a level, which combined with a 16 int, means you can max out close to 11 skills. Sylph has a decent class skill list that includes Hide, Move, Spot, Listen, and Survival. The way I see it, a thief plays 3 or 4 roles in a party: 1. Scout (move, hide, spot, listen); 2. Troubleshooter (search, spot, open lock, disable device); 3. Assassin (move, hide, sneak attack); 4. Face/Negotiator (Bluff, Diplomacy, Intimidate, Sense Motive). Considering her access to magic, ability to fly, skill list, and invisibility at will, Sylph makes a better scout than an actual rogue. With your massive charisma, you can make untrained checks on the interpersonal skills and still do moderately well. In a group that has no pure rogue, Sylph will be a welcome addition. Auspician can cover the troubleshooting, and a Bard or paladin can cover negotiations. Sneak attack won't be missed when you have a arcane caster (sylph) and divine caster (auspician) serving as your "thief." Is she a mage? Absolutely yes. 18 caster levels speak for themselves Is she a fighter? Well, not yet. Her BAB is that of a prestiged bard or cleric, so not so hot. The difference, however, is that she's not epic-level yet. She's a 15 HD character, which means that she still has 5 levels to go before she hits epic. Just about any class combination will get you to +16 BAB by level 25. Besides, in a pinch there's always Tenser's Transformation (just steal Iku Rex's spell list). Since you are an outsider you can even do the permanent Kelvezu polymorph if it suits your fancy. The other thing is that she's small sized, but again, polymorph can take care of this. (and in the long run, at high levels, being medium sized only gives you a 1-2 point damage advantage because of larger weapons). Furthermore, advancing Witch Hunter after level 20 gives Power Attack (and ignores the Str 13 prereq for most intents and purposes). This gives access to Divine Might - remember Sacred Exorcist and Extra turning? For those next 5 levels, I'd go with my classically favorite class mix for fighter/mage - Sacred Exorcist and Witch Hunter. Get as many BABs and caster levels as you want. Now imagine if you started with a more generous stat generation method.. Starting cha 18 +2 Magic-blooded +6 sylph +5 levels +5 tomes +6 item +2 spellcasting prodigy ------- Charisma 42 (44 for spellcasting purposes) Which means +16 to all saves +16 to damage (with divine might, 16 rounds/use 20/day) +16 to AC (with 2 levels of Arcane Duelist) +17 to spell DCs boatloads of bonus spells and one of the hottest chicks around Is she a powerful character? Hell yes. Full mage casting plus a boatload of goodies makes Sylph a very attractive alternative to a true sorcerer, and I'd go so far as to say it is the second best ECL race after half-ogre. Would I play her? Probably not - I am almost as averse to midget characters as I am to female characters. But she'd make an awesome cohort. What do yall think? |

| PhaedrusXY04-28-05, 03:23 AM | How would you go about advancing a sylph like that? I thought you had to take the level adjustment as it was...Do you mean advancing the racial hit dice? Most monsters tell how to advance them in their entries. The Sylph's entry says: 4-9 HD (Small), so that means it can have a maximum of 9 racial hit dice. After that, the only way to advance it is by adding class levels. But since a sylph is an outsider, and sylphs have a sorcerer caster level equal to their hit dice +4, it is a very good idea to advance them to max HD before taking any class levels. You still have to use the Level Adjustment (which is 5, and is included in Lord Shade's post). They are only 1 level behind a standard sorcerer of their ECL as far as caster level, and they have good racial stat mods, and Outsider hit dice, which are nice. |
| Callista04-28-05, 03:29 AM | Okay, so how about clerical magic? What can I do with that? Or, for that matter, both arcane and clerical? I'm not sure if that's too easy to do; but with my group, you'll have a bunch of people with not a lick of magic between the lot of them. Let me put it this way... we're all level 14 in our regular campaign, and the rogue is still healing people with Use Magic Device. And you should see us attempting to fight a swarm... it's not pretty. *sigh* Anyway, yeah, so I want to fill in that gap, both because I know it's there and because I like magic. I'm going to do a basic level 20 tank, too, though; probably a barbarian/bear warrior/warshaper. Or maybe druid. Just depends on what's needed... But yeah, if I can, I want to do magic. Because magic is just cool. :) (Yeah, the rogue using UMD? Mine. *sigh*) |
| PhaedrusXY04-28-05, 03:39 AM | Well, if you're looking to add a bit of Clerical casting to a character like the Sylph-Sorcerer, you could take the Arcane Disciple feat and add all the spells of a clerical domain to your spells known. There are also a few prestige classes that let you add domains onto arcane spellcasters. It seems like Contemplative and Sacred Exorcist were two of them. I can't think of any more that work like that. Then there is the possibility of adding something weird onto it, like Ur-Priest or Apostle of Peace, and then advancing as a Mystic Theurge. There is a new PrC that works like those in one of the new books too (Complete Divine probably), but I don't remember which one, or what the name is... Sorry. And if anyone in your group has Libris Mortis, you can make a fun True Necromancer that can act as both the Arcane and Divine caster for the group. Here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=5381919&postcount=13) is a 16th level True Necro NPC I used in a game a while back. You could abuse Precocious Apprentice and get into the PrC with just a single level of Wizard, also, but that option wasn't available when I made this NPC. |
| Callista04-28-05, 03:06 PM | Where does Arcane Disciple come from? I can't find it in any of my books... |
| Sir Ringe04-28-05, 03:31 PM | Arcane Disciple is from Complete Divine. If your campaign is going to be in the desert, you might want to look through Sandstorm. It might contains some feats and spells that you could use. I personally don't have the book so I don't know enough to recommend anything out of it. |
| RadicalTaoist04-28-05, 04:24 PM | I would not have found her if it were not for Balthanon, who introduced me to her sister Iriel. I liked Iriel too, but unfortunately she was already taken. This one is my own.LOL, for a moment I thought this was a character based on Balthanon's sister, then I reread more carefully. Please don't hurt me Bal (he's DMing a game I'm in) |
| MechaboyDos04-28-05, 05:00 PM | As an alternate approach, you could go for something I've been working on a bit: Human Lawful Good Paladin 2/Favored Soul 4/Warmage 4/Mystic Theurge 10 Taking Paladin levels gives you Knowledge (Religion) as a class skill, which means you can fulfill the six ranks requirement for Theurge. Favored Soul has Knowledge (Arcana) as a class skill, so getting the six ranks from there shouldn't be any problem. If you have the Player's Guide to Faerun book, take Spellcasting Prodigy (Charisma) at level 1 to make your Warmage spells harder to save against. Also take Practiced Spellcaster (Favored Soul) so your buff spells have longer duration and higher values and your healing spells do more. In total, this package gives you: BAB +12 2d10+4d8+4d6+10d4 HD Favored Soul Caster Level 14 (7th Level Divine Spells) Warmage Caster Level 14 (7th Level Arcane Spells) Fort 11+Con+Cha Ref 8+Dex+Cha Will 15+Wis+Cha No spell failure in Mithral Full Plate The ability to devastate nearly anything with all the Warmage blasting spells The ability to buff and heal with Favored Soul spells All spontaneous spellcasting, no need to prepare Lots of Charisma synergy The only downside is that Favored Soul relies on Wisdom for the purposes of determining save DCs, but if you use those spells mainly for buffing and healing then that won't be a problem. Plus no Turning means you can't take any of those nice Feats that burn turn attempts for bonuses, but you could fix that if you were willing to drop two levels of Theurge and settle for sixth level spells. You also can't use a Heavy Shield due to Warmage restrictions. But if you max out the AC on Mithral Full Plate and a Buckler and use lots of protective items, you'll still be a tank. Take a deity that has Greatsword as its favored weapon since you get free weapon focus with your deity's favored weapon at Favored Soul level 3. You'll be extremely versatile as far as spellcasting goes and you'll still be not half bad in melee, especially if you cast Divine Power on yourself. Get a few wands and scrolls and potions for any arcane spells you want to cast that Warmage doesn't have access to and you'll be good to go. |
