Hi everyone,
I just began playing in a new campaign, and started out with a 3.5 Ranger. We´re part of a of some sort oft army hunting dem eevill Demons, who overran half the world.
So far, so good, methinks. But during play it came out that the GM is going extremly stingy with equipment. Stingy as in, were happy to get Leather for our fighter.

Now I´m thinking of swapping characters, Caster would be a natural, but any primary caster other than Cleric is right out. the Characters won´t be going much further than 5th or 6th Level.

So, I´m fishing for ideas, Monk somehow seems natural as he´s rather selfsufficient, or a Spiked Chain Build, but as were playing without a a Battlemat his strengths won´t be coming out.

Ideas, hints ?

thanks in advance

Stick with ranger, you did pick evil outsiders as your first favored enemy right?

Your ranger should shine, as you will actually be consistently getting your favored enemy bonus (which is rare in most campaigns). You'll be wearing light armor anyway, so equipment stinginess shouldn't be too much of a problem.

BTW, what are your stats? And what books are allowed? The more info you give, the better responses you'll get.

Did take evil Outsiders, Stats are 32 Point Buy Human

STR 14
DEX 16
CON 14

INT 12
WIS 12
CHA 10

Drop CON and CHA to raise Dex ?

I took Weapon Focus and PBS as first level feats, planning to take Imp. Initiaive for third. We were restricted to Core for character creation, but should be able to use the Wizard Splat stuff for advancement.

I would suggest ditching weapon focus, and taking precise shot instead. Then at third, take imp. initiative or imp. rapid shot (if you have complete warrior).

For your stats, leave dex the way it is, having an 18 isn't worth it in point buy. Having cha 10 really isn't neccessary for your character, I would suggest:
Str: 16
Dex: 16
Con: 14
Int: 10
Wis: 12
Cha: 8
or
Str: 14
Dex: 16
Con: 14
Int: 14
Wis: 12
Cha: 8
Depending on whether you want more damage, or more skills.

Myself I'd preffer for a Ranger:
Str: 14
Dex: 16
Con: 14
Int: 12
Wis: 14
Cha: 8

I second taking Precise Shot at 1st w/ Point Blank. Can't take Improved Rapid Shot at 3rd so good choices would be: Quick Draw, Imp Initiative or maybe Far Shot. I'd definatly reccomend Imp Rapid Shot for 6th though. Not sure if Weapon Focus is that handy unless you need it as a prereq for better things.

So it seems everyone is in favour of the Ranger.

So, I´ll drop Cha in favour of Int, leave Str as it is as I´m pretty sure that a mighty Bow won´t be available for a long time.

Thanks

if you go for 6th level only there is one major thing to decide: how do you want to fight?

TWF: pure ranger or multiclass with rogue3
THF: take a level of barbarian and two of fighter, alternate them with ranger
ranged: eventually two fighter
