| SmiloDan05-02-04, 10:38 AM | What feat should I take for my dwarf ranger 3/fighter 3? He currently has Power Attack, Cleave, Improved Initiative, Two Weapon Fighting, Track, Endurance, and Weapon Focus--Dwarven Waraxe. I'm considering Iron Will, Improved Toughness, Improved Two Weapon Fighting, Improved Shield Bash, and Dodge. I'm thinking of going fighter the rest of the way with this character, or possibly going into Tempest. He currently wields a pair of dwarven waraxes. One is +3, the other is +1. |
| ninjarabbit05-02-04, 11:16 AM | My vote is for iron will since your will save sucks at the moment and the thing that'll hurt you more than anything else I think is a failed will save. |
| SmiloDan05-02-04, 01:50 PM | That what some of the other players said, but I'm boosting my Wisdom to 14 at 8th level, so it isn't THAT bad. |
| ninjarabbit05-02-04, 04:36 PM | So at level 8 you'd have +1 will from ranger, +1 from fighter, +2 for being a dwarf, and +2 for a 14 wis for a total of 6 plus any magic items you may have. Not bad, but iron will is still worth considering, otherwise I'd recommend improved shield bash. |
| Necros05-02-04, 07:17 PM | Iron Will. Sounds like the Occult Slayer would be a great prestige class for this character. You have all the prerequisites. I don't know what class you took at 6th, but you could take the Occult Slayer instead getting BA 1, Will Save +2, and some cool class features. Its in the Complete Warrior. |
| SmiloDan05-03-04, 09:55 AM | What does the Occult Slayer do? What are their powers? Are they tank-like at all? My dwarf ranger/fighter is supposed to be the party tank. |
| Necros05-03-04, 05:20 PM | Dont have book in front of me so some of this may be slightly off. Here goes... Its a 5 level prestige class requiring Improved Initiative and Weapon Focus in any weapon. At 1st level you choose a masterwork weapon you own and it gains 1d6 damage vs spellcasters or creatures that use spell like abilities. You also get arcane resistance +1 (bonus to saves vs spells). At 2nd level you get spell turning 1/day at a level equal to 5+prestige class level. At 3rd arcane resistance becomes +2, at 4th you get spell turning 2/day, at 5th immunity to mind affecting effects. |
| greymarch05-03-04, 05:30 PM | How about blind-fighting? When I play a melee character, I find its a must-have feat, unless my melee character can also cast 2nd level arcane spells (Blindsight is a 2nd level FR spell.) There are lots of ways that creatures can gain concealment against you. Its nice to have a second chance at hitting them. Here are just a few ways a creature can get concealment from you: 1. Displacement 2. Blur 3. Darkness 4. Invisibility 5. Opponent blinds you. 6. Fog, Haze, Mist, etc... |
| SmiloDan05-04-04, 08:54 AM | My current plan for this character is Ranger 3/Fighter 4/Foe Hunter (Gianthunter) X. But maybe it should be Ranger 3/Fighter 4/Foe Hunter 2/Occult Slayer 5/Foe Hunter X. We've been fighting a lot of giants...giants with cleric and wizard levels... |
| Necros05-04-04, 09:22 AM | Four level of fighter seems too much. Most people, myself included, seem to favor only two levels of fighter. Perhaps you can take two levels of fighter instead of four, and take instead one of the following: A) two levels of Psionic Warrior, B) two levels of Barbarian, or C) two levels of Paladin. Optionally, 3 levels of rogue is not too shabby either. |
| SmiloDan05-04-04, 10:21 AM | I already have 3 levels in ranger, so picking up a non-PrC is going to give me HUGE XP penalties. Also, I'm the lowest level guy right now, so I don't want to slow my advancement any further. I'm the newest guy. I started out at level 3 when everyone else was levels 4 to 6 or 7. At least most of them are spellcasters or spellcaster/rogue multi-classes. The party includes: Psychic Warrior/Fighter/Swashbuckler?/custom PrC fop with rapier and whip. CR 7. Wizard 7. Cleric 7. Rogue 3/Sorcerer 4. Rogue 2/Wizard 4. Dwarf Ranger 3/Fighter 2. Maybe I should go Dwarf Ranger 3/fighter 2/ occult slayer 5/PrC 10. If we're still fighting tons of giants, then Foe Hunter. If not, then maybe Tempest. Or maybe back to ranger. Or fighter. |

If you take Dodge as your Ftr4 bonus feat, you can immediately jump into the Dwarven Defender Prestige class at 8th. Then at 9th Level take either WpnSpec or ImpCrit. |
| Blade271805-05-04, 01:15 AM | Had you not already started your character, I would have suggested swapping over to a warhammer or maul and getting Hammer of Moradin (ranger spellcasting is divine). Two waraxes? That's a big TWF penalty. I would look at getting up to Ranger 6 for the next Combat Style upgrade, then moving out into Dwarven Defender (using an animated shield), or switch to one axe and a shield while acquiring Imp. Shield Bash. I think Silver Marches had a PrC designed specifically for killing giants, might want to check that one out, if you think giant killing is a calling for your character. |
| SmiloDan05-05-04, 11:59 AM | I think I'll go with Improved Shield Bash. My original concept was a dwarven waraxe and a spiked shield. My AC is relatively low (18, or 22 vs. Giants), so I need all the help I can get in that area. Then Weapon Specialization in Dwarven Waraxe. I don't want to go Dwarven Defender because I want to be somewhat mobile. |
| Mommy was an Orc05-05-04, 02:45 PM | Isn't wanting to kill 4 out of 6 members of your party a problem with the Occult Slayer? The flavor text is pretty specific. There's a reason they tend to be loners... Originally posted by SmiloDan Wizard 7. Cleric 7. Rogue 3/Sorcerer 4. Rogue 2/Wizard 4. Maybe I should go Dwarf Ranger 3/fighter 2/ occult slayer 5/PrC 10. | SmiloDan05-05-04, 03:04 PM | Yeah, that's another thing. I haven't read the flavor text of the Occult Slayer, but if it's extremely anti-mage, I'll probably not take it. |
| ninjarabbit05-05-04, 03:54 PM | Good choice with improved shield bash. My adice for further development of your character is to go to fighter 4 then finish off the rest with ranger to improve your two weapon fighting abilities, get an animal companion, get more skill points, and some minor spellcasting. |
| The Lone Drow05-05-04, 05:13 PM | Get Occult Slayer and Forsaker, sell your magical items and buy adamantine weapons and armor... you should already have enough money for two waraxes and a full plate made from adamantine... I think :D Boost up your constitution and strength and your AC should be improved... take combat expertise and you can sacrifice attack roll points for AC... |
