Howdy,

My Living Greyhawk sorcerer just hit 12th level, (actually, he's 8 sorcerer and 4 fatespinner) so I have to pick out a good 6th lvl spell. Assuming I take the final level of fatespinner, I won't get another new spell until 14th lvl, so I really need to make this one count.

Here's his present spell list (skipping the cantrips):

1st: enlarge person, mage armor, magic missle, lesser orb of electricty, true strike
2nd: alter self, false life, glitterdust, invisibility, scorching ray
3rd: fireball, fly, haste, tongues
4th: dim door, greater inv, orb of acid
5th: greater blink, wall of force

Also, the sorcerer has a high dex, so he can make ray attacks fairly easily. He is NOT a melee character. Instead, he spends about half of his time buffing and the other half doing ranged damage spells.

I don't think I want just another boom spell, unless it really rocks. Something utilitarian would be nice, or maybe a huge buff spell, but I'm willing to listen to any suggestions.

Of course, he is a fatespinner, so a spell that has some luck/fate type quality to it would always be nice for flavor. As an example, I had thought of taking the 5th lvl spell Prismatic Ray because of the random effects.

thanks

There's always good ol' Disintegrate, which provides both blasting and utility.

Wow, I just read that description, and it doesn't destroy equipement (I always thought it disintergrated EVERYTHING). Very cool, even for a boom spell.

Thanks.

Actually, it is a nice utility spell. You can use it to open doors or remove walls and other impediments to movement. Plus it takes down a wall of force.

Greater Dispel Magic is the no-brainer choice. Every spell caster should have that spell avaliable.

Disintegrate, as previously mentioned, is a nice spell for both damage and sometimes utility.

One of my personal favorites is Ruby Ray of Reversal (from Spell Compendium). It has a large number of different things that it can do, and fills the role nicely of a non-damage utility spell. Sorcerers have a very limited number of spells that they can cast, so having a single spell that can do a bunch of different things is great.

Straight out of the SRD:

If you have Polymorph, Transformation can be a very good choice.

Mmm. Hydras with max BAB for level....

Alternatively, Flesh to stone can work wonders on the right opponant...(Arcane casters/rogue types).

Complete Arcane has a few nice spells, and their is a 6th level (Mental Pinnacle) spell in the XPH that temporarily makes you a psion, which, if you save 1 sixth level slot until the end of the day, can give you just enough of a boost to get you through one last combat. (Seriously, it's all the power you'll ever need in a can, specifically a can containing a potion of fox's cunning).

Basically you become a psion with access to the powers Mind Thrust, Ego Whip, Psionic Blast, Id Insinuation and Psychic crush.

Granted, they are all Will save based, it only lasts for 1 rd/lvl, and you only get 3 pp/lvl, but an augmented ego whip, or Psychic crush will guarantee at least SOME damage, while an augmented Mind Thrust against a weak willed creature is a terrible thing to behold, especially as the save scales up (Fighter types).

Best yet, in a campaign without psi/magic transparency, this allows you to circumvent high SRs.

Why hang on to powerpoints that go away at the end of the spell? Augment EVERYTHING.

Get a dorje or two for when you run out of power points, though, because this spell is not dismissable.

Create Potion might be a good feat to have :D
