700 damage with 1 spell [Archive] - Wizards Community

Perhaps someone could have done this before, but...

Race: Human
Class: Evoker

Stat:
Int: 18(base) +6(headband) +5(level) +5(inherent) = 34

Feats:
Fearless Destiny [Races of Destiny]
Spellcasting Prodigy [Player's Guide to Faerun]
Sudden Empower [Complete Arcane]
Sudden Maximize [Complete Arcane]

Mycontil's Last Resort [Shining South] lets you do unnamed damage, dependent upon your remaining slots.
With 34 Int, Spellcasting Prodigy, Specialization, you can have 74 spell slots.
(Total Spell Slot: 74 = (4+1)*10 +24)

Therefore:
Damage Dice(10'): 73d8 (excluding the slot for Mycontil's Last Resort spell itself)
Metamagic Applied: 620.5(min) 748.25(avg) 876(max)

The spell is self-destructing, but Fearless Destiny feat lets you survive damaging effect, once.

If you don't mind dying, you can be a gray elf, which has +2 Int modifier.
That will increase it upto 75d8.

BTW, it's not really 1 spell, since it uses up all the spell slots. :D

Technically, Protected Destiny won't work in this case because it only allows you to reroll a natural 1. Not being given a saving throw to avoid the effect of Mycontil's Last Resort is another thing entirely.

It would be WAY cool if it worked, though. Another difficulty I see is making the REF save even if you ruled you could use Protected Destiny - a 34 INT makes the DC 31 (at least). Rare is the straight classed Evoker could make that.

Its a nifty idea, and quite good in an RP sense (if you ever had to save the party, and sacrifice yourself) However, to deal much more damage and stay alive is still possible at level 20.

But good idea!

For more damage, take extra slot feat a couple times. Not optimized, but hey.

I have the spell right in front of me, and it doesn't mention dice. 'All creatures within 10 feet of you take 8 points of damage per spell slot remaining'.

Sudden Maximize is unneccessary. Sudden Empower won't work. Save two feats, so its not all that bad.

Mycontil's Last resort will damage 584/438/292. A drop in damage, but certainly nothing to scoff at.

Also: Mastery of Shaping/Extrodinary Spell Aim anyone?

Just a thought.

Henceforth, Rods of Absorption are your best friends. (Cast spells without depleating your slots! Yay!)

LOL, I feel stupid. Thanks for the correction.

As for MoS/ESA, I had thought about it. And imo, it depends on DM's call ultimately, because it's a personal spell and the spirit is self-destructing spell.
But when RAW, nothing prevents you from applying it.

So how does Festering Anger work? Do you have a Cleric friend cast Lesser Restoration on you every day, as not to die from Constitution damage? Do you be a Cleric, and cast it on yourself? Deliberately infecting yourself with Festering Anger is both silly and wrong. :nonono:

Sadly, that doesn't work, because Explosive Spell requires a spell that rolls a reflex save.
Erupt rolls a fort save.

Isn't the highest spell level 9? which would make Meteorswarm 9+ and thus uncastable? Or did I miss some rules? If I did please tell me where they are.

I was under the impression that your number of spells stop at lvl 20 thus you never gain 10+ level spells, only epic spells with the right feat.

I must ask, if one has abused Festering Anger to get a STR score in the billions, why not just hit something?

I mean, it's unlikely that you'll miss.

And unless i'm sorely mistaken as to how scores over 40 work, you would very likely kill whatever you hit.

The same 20th level wizard can cast a Purified, Empowered, Maximized Hammer of Righteousness for 240 points of force damage or 360 points of force damage is the target is an evil outsider. If the same wizard has a Greater Rod of Quicken he can shoot it twice!

That's 480 or 720 points of non-resistable damage in a single round and the wizard doesn't die! It's also only 2 9th level spell slots so he can do it again next round if the target is still standing.

Gotta love spells written with no damage cap.

Explosive runes +(failed) dispel magic

= 6d6/3rd level spell slot/day. Level 5 wizard + 10 days = 120d6 force damage (but then again if your dm says you cannot choose to totally fail an area dispel it will not work.)

Add mage hand to deliver it to 'reading distance' so no save, or still the 15' area. = level 3 spell of doom

Last week I had a guy thinking in GY. He had to explain to me that he ment Giga-Years. These people are measuring galaxies in billions of solar masses, care to calculate how many mole's that are? This monring there was a woman who needed a Petabyte of storage for her 2006 experiment. Etc. etc. etc.

You know the funny thing? It doesn't specify that the spell slots have to be YOUR spell slots.

Bind 2 Eladrin (14HD creatures. I think they cast spells as like... 14HD clerics) with the "Channel" ability.

When you channel them, you gain access to all of their spells and spell like abilities.

Bingo. More damage.

Admittedly this isn't a single casting of a spell, but all can be triggered simultaneously from 200 feet. I know, druids, and this isn't even optimized.

fire seeds = [8d8+(CL*8)]*(# spell slots > 5th level) fire damage

17th level druid + 3 levels heirophant + 3 practiced spellcaster = 23CL, with wisdom 28 --> 14 spell slots above 5th level.

(8d8+184)*14 fire damage
112d8+2576 fire damage
avg. (w/ energy substitution) = 3170 <divided as you like between acid, cold, electricity or fire> damage

This, I believe, breaks the D&D damage one-hit record.

Formerly a bit over 168 billion d6, with a few revisions needed.

Now, it's simply N. Where N is a number sufficiently high enough to stun any player, and give any DM a heart attack... and then some more on top of that.
Jeremymc

04-01-05, 09:40 PM
Hmmm.... I dunno. Using the Hive in 3.5 is EXTREMELY difficult, as CUstserv points out there are rules about swarms that didn't exist in 3.0.

In fact, the "swarm" type itself didn't exist in 3.0. So when the Hive was created, the Vermin Lord had to summon each and every individual creature as an individual creature.

It's still higly debatable how much that works in 3.5. Some 3.0 things can be directly imported, but the Hive/Vermin Lord isn't really one of them. That's the reason why a hivemind of ONLY 1000 creatures is so powerful. Because it's extremely difficult in 3.0 to SUMMON 1000 creatures.

It's much more universally comfortable to just summon a ton of creatures with the "channeling" ability. Basically, there's no limit to the creatures you can summon.

So make a Mystic Theurge -cast "planar ally" as much as you can with Divine spells, and cast "Planar Binding" as much as you can with your arcane spells. Then go to town.

I don't really care enough to figure out much of it, but the applicable spells are

Planar Binding, Lesser: Arcane 5th level - 6HD outsider
Planar Binging: Arcane 6th level - 12HD outsider
Planar Binding, Greater: Arcane 7th level - 18 HD outsider
Gate: Arcane: Arcane 9th level - multiple creatures of your CL, or one creature up to twice your CL.

Planar Ally, Lesser: Divine 4th level - 6HD outsider.
Planar Ally: Divine 5th level - 12HD outsider.
Planar Ally, Greater: Divine 6th level - 18HD outsider.
Gate: Same as before. Divine 9

And creatures:

Trumpet Archons are 12HD creatures, and cast as 14th level clerics.
Planetars have 14HD, and cast as 17th level clerics.
Solars have 22 HD and cast as 20th level clerics.
A Ghaele Eladrin has 10HD and casts as a 14th level cleric.

So, go nuts everyone.

The D&D one-hit damage record has been "as large as the player wants it to be" since the day Magic of Faerun came out. I've seen a 6th/1st Gnomish Wizard/Spelldancer slap a Sand Giant for 1d2+6,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,00 0,000,000,000,000 subdual damage. Not possible in 3.5, per se, but other methods of accomplishing similar numbers exist. :p

Hey, I noticed a way to make the HH's damage even nastier...

People have been focusing on throwing One Big Rock for craploads of damage. However, I am certain that subdividing said rock into millions of smaller rock will yield millions of lesser impacts that do much more total damage than Big Rock.

E.g.: 800 lbs Round Rock does 6d6 damage when used as an improvised weapon (400 lbs is 5d6, + 2d6 because 800lbs is 2x200lbs more than 400lbs).

Now, 2 400lbs Round Rocks would do 2 x 5d6. Or 10d6.

Now take the massive tonnage of the HH, fashion a large container for all those rocks, and throw. The weight is the same, the overall pain is greater.

(Sorry if I'm necromancing any unwanted topics, but it just came to me)

From my understanding, the Balor bomb was a maximum damage post from awhile back, that involved using a staff of gate to Summon /alot/ of balors. And then having them use their summon abilities to gab a bunch more, and arranging them in a sphere around you, and then killing several with a holy word. The Balors, of course, explode. Which sets off more balors. which Explode. And so on, and so forth, doing untold amounts of damage.
RadicalTaoist

04-02-05, 12:56 AM
The details went something like this: an LE lich cleric with the Evil and Law domains gets an insanely high caster level through any means possible, and Gates in a crapload of balors.
In their round, each balor summons another balor.
Then the lich cleric does a super-Dictum with his insane CL. His Dictum is high enough to make the Balors go *pop*, except Balors don't go *pop*, they go *boom*. So you have a bunch of balors exploding through death throes (I forget exactly how many) and the spell damage was into the average of the ten thousands, I think. The Lich, of course, is reduced to dust, but the phylactery's somewhere safe and a good distance away.

But characters did age, and when you're dancing approximately a thousand times longer than the estimated age of the universe, you'll be downright strange when you come back. :D

RadicalTaoist, Scrollreader: Thanks -- I'd guessed something like this. I just never figured out the damage, but at a hundred per balor, it's going to be sick.

Minor nitpick, though, RT: Gating a Balor is a [Chaotic, Evil] spell when calling a Balor, Dictum is [Lawful], and clerics can't cast spells opposing their alignments. He'd have to be a NE character to pull this off.
RadicalTaoist

04-02-05, 01:24 AM
Hmm...can a nonlawful cleric take the Law domain?
If not, he'll have 1 less caster level on that Dictum. No big deal. And of course, the Dictum will probably destroy him...but it's only his body (which would have been incinerated by dying balors anyways).

On the subject of the H.I.V.E., is there any way to get it to cast an Explosive Fire Storm? Because I just realized that, unlike the actual spell damage, there's no cap on the area you can produce, and with the H.I.V.E.'s caster level....

1) No. You must match an alignment domain's alignment aspect to take it.

2) Explosive works on spells that allow Reflex saves and affect an area (cone, cylinder, line, burst). Fire Storm affects 2 10' cubes per level. This is not a cone, cylinder, line or burst, so I don't think Explosive can be applied to it. Sadly.

Although I hear there's a spell called Earth Reaver that might do the trick as well. I haven't personally read it, though I've seen it described, when modified with Explosive Spell, as a tactical nuke.

Now take the massive tonnage of the HH, fashion a large container for all those rocks, and throw. The weight is the same, the overall pain is greater.

(Sorry if I'm necromancing any unwanted topics, but it just came to me)
A MIRV rock?

Anyone think the lvl 2 imbue arrow ability will work for this?

If it is area damage centred on the caster, then woo! Just hope you can hit the creature with an arrow

Earth Reaver has a 20 ft radius spread, + 10 ft per level area of effect.
Clr/Sor 4 from Savage Species.

240 foot radius, assuming a CL of only 20, if it's widened. 31d6 points of damage, in a 500+ foot diameter circle. It's not the Atom bomb, but it will sure as hell put a dent in an army. Or at least definately give someone the message,w hen you want them to Go. Away.

LOL, never thought I'd see the mole used as a unit of Str in D&D. :D

DM: So, what's your character's strength score?
PC: 1 mole.
DM: :uh-huh: Ok... How strong is a mole, anyway? 2 or 3?
PC:

I'm going to name my next spellcaster Avagadro. :)

So how does Festering Anger work? Do you have a Cleric friend cast Lesser Restoration on you every day, as not to die from Constitution damage? Do you be a Cleric, and cast it on yourself? Deliberately infecting yourself with Festering Anger is both silly and wrong. :nonono:
+2 Str,-2 Con every day you have it. But if you have Cancer Mage 1 then you get to get rid of every negative things associated with all diseases except for cosmetic ones (worts, scabs, etc...)
