Has anybody ever tried a 74 point build? Could it be used if, say, I wanted to run a campain with monsters that are...ahem...more difficult than one would normally see at the party's level?

Monsters CR are increased when you give them bonuses to their stats (i forget the exact amount). As such, just treat your players with a higher CR. So yes you can do it. YOu can even do it if your players had straight 20 stats to start with. So if a 72 point build makes them the equivelant of +2 CR, give them +2 CR encounters. At early levels this will be kind of rough (a d8 PC is still pretty pasty against a CR 4 or 5 monster) so you will have to be careful. Maybe just do the same for your monsters. Give them bonus to their stats.

Well if you want go with a 73 point build I'd suggest a team of 76 point build anthropomorphic squid basket weavers :)

how about rolling 15+1d3 for each stat?
74points/6stats=12.3=4x16's + 2x18 + 2 points
